Virgin pilots 200Mbps broadband

Virgin pilots 200Mbps broadband

Fibre optic networks are offering faster broadband speeds
Virgin Media is piloting broadband speeds of 200Megabit per second (Mbps) for a small group of users in the UK.

Following successful trials in the lab, 100 "lead adopters" in Kent will have access to the high speeds, believed to be among the fastest in the world.

Virgin will be using the high speeds to test applications such as 1080p high definition TV and 3DTV.

The pilot will last six months before the results are analysed. A variety of upstream speeds will also be tested.

Virgin is able to achieve the speeds thanks to a technology called Docsis 3, which makes more efficient use of the capacity of fibre to the cabinet connections used by Virgin.

FAST CONSUMER BROADBAND CONNECTIONS
1Gbps - KDDI Japan
160Mbps J:Com Japan
120Mbps Liberty Global - Netherlands
The challenge in making use of the speeds is the inability of wireless networks to cope with 200Mbps connections therefore requiring hard wired connections.

Users also need high-specification computers that have gigabit Ethernet ports that can deal with such fast data speeds.

There is also the issue that many websites only have 100Mbps connections into data centres, meaning they are unable to serve pages or content at a speed to take advantage of the fast service.

Virgin said the 200Mbps service is the fastest speed in the world achieved using Docsis 3 technology.

In a statement Virgin Media's chief executive Neil Berkett said: "We're at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mb pilot will give us further insight into how true 'wideband' services might be used by consumers."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8036086.stm

Steam RC Toyzzz

If buy the Showman's Steam engine with the lights
then get a 3 channel one so you can turn the lights on and off.

Hope this helps

Regards
Sam

http://www.steamreplicas.co.uk

Enjoy!!

Logitech launches $500 rodent

There's a 3D mouse in the house
By Stewart Meagher
Thursday, 16 April 2009, 11:37
LOGITECH-OWNED FANCY MOUSE MAKER 3D Connexion has announced the Spacepilot 3D Pro, probably the most complex, and expensive, controller we have ever seen.
Festooned with buttons, and incorporating an LCD screen, the controller works in six planes by allowing users to rotate and pull up or down of the main joystick controller, making it perfect for 3D design applications.
It works with XP and Vista, Solaris 8 and 10 and various flavours of Linux, but Macolytes seem to have been left out in the cold.
It's available now from major CAD resellers and direct from Logitech for $499. µ
L'Inq
3D Connexion

What would you guys drop $40,000 on? Maybe a nice Lexus, or a Large down payment on a house… Na we’re computer guru’s and none of that would help in our countless hours of blogging or … well… World of Warcraft . I know what your thinking $40,000 is a lot of money to spend let alone on a glorified chair / computer desk.
Well this is no where near your regular computer chair, this is the Emperor Workstation by NovelQuest. This baby has 3 screens with more real estate than some of those quite large digital signage screens that you get excited when you see adverts flashing on in public. But this thing goes much further sporting the ability to tilt hydraulically, rotate 360 degrees, a full THX 5.1 surround sound with a subwoofer in the seat itself. But no that’s not enough, this thing’s got touch screen controls, light therapy, air filtration, adjustable seating, a full 3 hours of backup battery power to keep the entire chair running without a power source. Of course it also has all the basic’s like your iPod/iPhone dock, microphone, webcam, card reader, USB, eSata and Firewire ports as well as a Cable TV input. Basically you could get into this chair and pretty much never leave again, well as long as you use voip to order your dominos.

This one takes the cake

Acer Console Rumours Resurface

Acer Console Rumours Resurface
Author	Hugo Jobling
Published	27th Feb 2009

Leave a comment Email this to a friend TrustedReviews Newsletters
I thought the rumours of Acer building a console died last year when they surfaced, but apparently not. According to German site Donamimhaber (lit: Hardware news) such a system is being built by Acer - using Nvidia's Ion platform no less.

This isn't just idle speculation, either. Donanimhaber has a bunch of official-looking slides to back up its claims. The system looks like a cross between nettops like the Eee Box - due to its monitor-mountable form factor - and the Wii, thanks to the proposed input method - motion-sensitive controller.
Calling the device a games console is probably a bit of a stretch. Simply put the system is simply a small PC which has enough grunt to play a reasonable selection of modern games at a decent resolution and graphic settings. Asus even has a similar offering already, in its Eee Box with dedicated Radeon HD 3400 graphics.
If this is more than just a concept piece it could prove an interesting product, nonetheless. Even if only as a rare example of a PC actually using Ion!

http://www.trustedreviews.com/gaming/news/...s-Re-Surface/p1
BlackBerry's heat problem, not batteries but cause

BlackBerry's heat problem, not batteries but cause still unknown - Japan sales halted
Mobility
By Rick C. Hodgin
Friday, February 27, 2009 14:03

vote now
Buzz up!
Chicago (IL) - The Canada-based Research In Motion company announced today that it has ruled out faulty batteries as a possible cause of keyboards heating up during recharging of BlackBerry Bolds sold in Japan last week. More than 30 users have reported their keyboards were heating up during recharging, causing concern with all of the recent reports of battery fires and recalls.

To date, there have not been any reports of fire or damage in the BlackBerry Bolds sold. In addition, the temperature increase is still within regulations. However, it is an unexpected side-effect, and RIM admits it still doesn't know the cause -- though attempts to figure it out are ongoing.

As a result of the heat concern, Japan's NTT DoCoMo mobile carrier suspended domestic sales today, though about 4,000 units have already been sold. It is unknown how many other users have noticed the heating problem, but have not yet reported it.

The BlackBerry Bold (technical information and slideshow), is a 3G smart phone including Wi-Fi, aGPS, keyboard backlighting, a built-in speakerphone, video and audio playback capability, 1 GB on-board memory, a 480 x 320 (217 ppi) pixel screen and tethered modem support through an integrated wireless modem. aGPS is tied to Blackberry maps with turn-by-turn directions service, which requires activation through a data plan. AT&T also offers its AT&T Navigator GPS service for the Bold in parallel to Blackberry maps for $9.99 per month fee.

See the original AFP article republished on MSN.

PowerBook explodes in London office

Exclusive Flames leap "six feet high"
By Paul Hales
Thursday, 26 February 2009, 15:27

STAFF IN THE London office of a marketing company were left shocked and reeling yesterday after an Apple PowerBook burst into flames.
The company asked not to be identified, as IT manager Steven told how he was called to the scene by reports of smoke billowing out of an employee's computer.
"When I got there, much of the smoke has dissipated and nothing much was happening. I picked up the notebook to investigate, and turned it over. Soon after I put it down again, it basically exploded. Flames were flying six feet in the air, and sparks," he told the INQ.

"I saw that the smoke was coming out of the battery and I was worried about the chemicals in the battery so I told everyone to get out of the office"
"I was stood there wondering what to do with the laptop when suddenly a fire started and flames started coming out of the battery."

"I went to get a fire extinguisher and was just getting ready to put out the fire when all of a sudden it went BANG!
"Suddenly flames flew up about six feet in the air and there were sparks flying everywhere.
"There was a popping sound and more smoke," a shaken Steven told the INQ. "At that point I just hit the fire alarm and scarpered.
"I was about two feet away from it when flames went up to the ceiling."
A company fire marshall relieved Steve of his firefighting duties and emptied around half the extinguisher on the burning wreck.

"When he stopped using it, it just fired up again," said Steve. "He used the rest if the extinguisher on it but the laptop was still hot and glowing and the battery was all molten inside and glowing red.
"At that point we decided to wait for the fire brigade to turn up."

Steve said the PowerBook was three-to-four years old. "We are aware that there was a battery recall several years ago, it is entirely possible that the battery was one of those subject to that recall, but we can't tell now as the battery is now just slag."
The company is checking all its MacBooks to see if any were bought at the same time as the incendiary device and assessing all the batteries they contain. The flaming PowerBook was taken away for investigation.

"We were thinking, what if this had happened somehere else, like in a car or plane," said Steve later reflecting on the day's events.
"I think I'll stick to the IT job and let the professionals deal with the fires." µ

µ

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1...s-london-office
What is cooking in Intel?

Here it goes bros/ sisters... I seriously dont know where to post this... as the eco-system spawns to a family of products..
Enjoy!!

http://www.gulfnews.com/business/Technology/10287430.html

Looks like another vote cast for smart building/home.

Intel Capital invests in three UAE-based technology companies
By Scott Shuey, Chief Reporter
Published: February 18, 2009, 22:53
Dubai: Intel Capital, the investment arm of Intel, the world's largest maker of computer chips, on Wednesday announced it has made investments in three UAE-based technology companies.
The companies include Conservus International, which makes mobile internet devices that provide hotel guests with concierge services, Pulse Technologies, which provides building automation services to hotels and property developers, and Vertex Animation Studio, which is currently developing video games, animation services, and virtual reality applications.
Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and executive vice-president of Intel, told Gulf News that the current credit crisis had not changed the company's investments strategies.________________________________________
<< OLE Object: Picture (Device Independent Bitmap) >>
________________________________________
"We have not backed off from investing in technology," he said. "We firmly believe that technology innovation does not stop because of the environment. If anything the innovation in technology is what drives a lot of growth in the future."
Terms of the deals were not disclosed, but Sodhani said that in 2008 Intel invested $1.59 billion (Dh5.8 trillion) in 62 new companies around the world, although $1 billion of that involved a single investment into Clearwire, an American-based company that is developing wireless broadband services.
Intel Capital also invested in Sphere Technology, another UAE-based company that offers enterprise networking applications in November of last year. Feroz Sanaulla, Intel Capital's regional director, said he expects more deals to be announced in the upcoming months. Sodhani said Intel is taking its time to evaluate companies as they find them.
"We work very diligently, very carefully. We evaluate our companies," he said. "We take our time. This is the culmination of the kind of effort we have been putting in here, and you are now going to see the outcome of our efforts in a number of investments."
Sodhani said he expects fewer companies will seek financing in 2009 simply because company valuations have gone down "very dramatically" and many companies will not look for capital if they can avoid it. However, he said the number of companies approaching Intel for capitalisation has increased recently.
Kamal Nasser, the chairman of Conservus, who has worked with Intel before, said the chip maker is offering a much needed inflow of capital into a region that lacks a well developed venture capital market. He said he didn't even look for other investments.

New Smart Home System from Pulse Technologies
6. April 2008, 20:47 UhrSmart HomeMichael Stepanov

About 1.5 years passed since the first version of Pulse controller was announced. It also supports popular multi-room media systems, DLNA Certified and UPnP network entertainment products and client software for Vista Media Center.
The new Smart Home System from Pulse Technologies will be launched officially at the up-coming Light & Building 2008 exhibition in Frankfurt (April 6th to 11th, 2008).

Pulse Technologies Release Details of Stunning New Smart Home System

Friday, 04 April 2008

We've just got some details through from Pulse Living on their new smart home system. We're being teased with some beautiful publicity shots of their new kit. Three touchscreen options are available for example, two in-wall and 1 stand alone. Features include widescreen and potrait options, LED backlighting, Wi-Fi and some models can be powered over CAT5. The system controller runs on embedded Windows CE 5 and includes Z-Wave / KNX/EIB, 2 ethernet ports and RS232.
New company Pulse is result off two companies, Aspalis and Navicom, coming together. The system has been designed in the UAE and is being manufactured in Germany. It will have its official launch at the up-coming Light & Building 2008 exhibition in Frankfurt (April 6th to 11th, 2008).

Control options are available for PC and mobile devices. A static IP is not required and the system has native clients for the iPhone/iPod Touch and Windows Mobile devices (Firefox, IE and Safari browsers are all supported).

More details will be available from the new Pulse website (launching on April 10th) - www.pulseliving.com

[addedon]February 22, 2009, 12:21 pm[/addedon]Anyone here interested? How much you are willing to pay for it?

.. as of now.. such technology is hard to find locally in Malaysia at affordable price levels... personally I think this is a excellent move by Intel to have a platform for its future growth... there are other players with their own eco-system interpretations... eg LG, Panasonic...

Asus hikes prices on all notebooks and Eee product

Asus hikes prices on all notebooks and Eee products
Increases of up to 20 per cent on all products take effect March 1
Andrew Hendry 09 February, 2009 12:43:00
ASUS has announced an increase in prices of up to 20 per cent on all existing and upcoming notebooks and Eee Family products, effective March 1, 2009.
The current financial climate and an increase in the cost of computer parts and manufacturing operations were cited as reasons behind the price hikes.
The company said it is also restructuring its channel strategy, but offered no further comment.
ASUS recently debuted its ultra-thin netbook S121, and its latest Eee PC, the T91 which includes a touchscreen that swivels.
According to December findings by research firm, DisplaySearch, the global netbook market increased by 160 per cent from the second to third quarter of 2008. Acer enjoyed the top global spot in netbook sales, taking 38.3 per cent of the market to Asus' 30 per cent.

http://www.arnnet.com.au/article/275886/as...&fpid=399285820

Anyone tried using 2 mouse on one laptop?

can try this

Install Multiple Mouse and Keyboard on One Computer
Author: Raymond
22
NOV

Sharing one keyboard and mouse on multiple computers makes sense. Many of us have more than 1 computers but don’t want too many mess cables around or multiple mouses and keyboards that can confuse us. That’s why there are free software such as Input Director and Synergy that allows you to easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware.
Well what about installing multiple mouse and keyboard on one computer? I’ve tried installing 2 mouse on my laptop and it doesn’t make a difference because both mouse shares the same cursor. However, when doing presentation or brainstorming on one computer with a few people, having multiple mouse and keyboard really helps. Check out the flash animation below and you’ll get the idea.

As you can see, the job gets done much faster. Here’s a software called TeamPlayer that allows you to use multiple mouse and keyboard on one single computer.

.
TeamPlayer allows you to connect multiple mouse and keyboards to one PC. You will now be able to share your computer with a number of people. This will be a new experience and will require some getting used to. After you’ve done so, you will probably not want to go back. As you can see at the screenshot below, I have 3 mouse installed on my laptop and each mouse has its own cursor.

You might be surprised how EASY it is to get this working. Only requires 3 simple step without any configuration.

1. Connect your extra mice and keyboards
Plug in your extra USB mice and keyboards. Add a USB hub if you don’t have enough USB ports.
2. Install the software
Locate your TeamPlayer set up file and double click it. Then follow the on-screen instructions. TeamPlayer will start right after installation. During start up, in the right hand bottom of your screen, you will see how many devices TeamPlayer has discovered.
3. Take control by clicking your Left Mouse Button
Move your mice around. The mouse with a white cursor (and a little colored square) has windows control. If someone else wants to take control, he or she can simply click his left mouse button to take control.
TeamPlayer is free for personal and educational use for a maximum of 3 users. More than that, you’ll have to purchase their license. According to the research and experience of TeamPlayer developers, they recommend a limitation of participation to 30 users. This number enables optimized group dynamics. More than that, it’s going to be chaotic.

TeamPlayer is too simple that it has some limitations. TeamPlayer doesn’t detect new devices in real-time. So if you’ve added any mouse or keyboard, you’ll have to close TeamPlayer and run it again. It is also a known issue that the screen flickers when you use TeamPlayer on application/game that uses OpenGL and also videos / codec settings. In Photoshop, Alt + KEY and CTRL + Key hotkeys won’t work when TeamPlayer is running. Switching between users on a Vista or XP machine causes the mice to lock. (logout and login resolves the problem for now)

In general tablets and whiteboards work fine - in some cases you may need to disable the driver. Finally, every keyboard will be active all the time. So make sure you only type text after you’ve agreed to this with the others in your group. Well, TeamPlayer 2.0 is still in beta. This is mainly done because they develop new features all the time. We can can surely expect more features for TeamPlayer in future.
