Are there any one touch zoom lenses still around? The kind where you turn the ring to focus and slide the ring front and backwards to zoom?
I'm trying to do something like this, but with a 2 ring zoom, i cannot seem to zoom in and out smoothly.

I know this can probably be done digitally, but being old school, I prefer to do it with the camera instead.

Thanks in advance.

p.s.
Luxury Tax

QUOTE

Saving football from itself

Fans of American sports have long argued that what the rest of the world calls football could do a lot worse than take a long hard look itself before adopting some of the rules and that govern North American sports.

Well, it finally it looks like someone has been listening to that sage counsel.

The Financial Times reports that a delegation of no doubt very serious looking, suit-wearing types from UEFA were recently in the US on a fact finding mission where they held talks with Major League Baseball on the advantages of their so-called ''luxury tax'' and how a similar scheme could be introduced in European football.

In short the premise would see European football's richest clubs effectively subsidising smaller, less affluent sides by having a tax levied against them for paying exorbitant wages to star players.

UEFA would hope that as well as seeing the riches of elite level football trickle down to smaller clubs, the idea would also encourage clubs to curb their spending, thus resisting the temptation to borrow beyond their means and become saddled with dangerous levels of debt.

As part of MLB's collective bargaining agreement between the players' union and the team owners, a pay threshold is set for total annual player salaries ($155m for 2008).

Under the terms of the CBA, if a franchise exceeds the agreed level they must pay a tax of 40% on what they spend over the threshold. The monies are then pooled and redistributed through the MLB's Industry Growth Fund, which helps support and promote the sport.

In a UEFA variant, any limit on wages would presumably be agreed between UEFA itself and the European Club Association (the body which represents 137 clubs, including giants like Manchester United and Real Madrid) and all pooled monies would be redistributed to smaller teams.

How a team would qualify for the subsidy and exactly how much each team would receive from the pool are just some of the problems the luxury tax could expect to face in any future consultation, and that's before considering such thorny matters as the total salary limit itself, or what the taxable percentage would be.

It cannot be argued that UEFA president Michel Platini has not tried to address the financial concerns threatening the game since taking office in 2006, and one can sympathise with the resistance he and Europe's governing body have come up against.

However, while the often suggested salary cap has never come close to introduction because of issues with the European Union (which would effectively render any cap illegal because it could be argued that it restricts free movement of trade), a luxury tax could circumvent legal pitfalls because, although it would see the introduction of a salary cap, the crucial caveat would be that clubs would be allowed to exceed it.

Another idea under discussion at UEFA headquarters, and similarly aimed at protecting the clubs from themselves, could see squads limited to a maximum of 25 players. The rationale being that by restricting the size of their squads, teams would be able to cut wage costs accordingly.

While no-one could take against UEFA's basic objective, which is to ensure the health and wealth of all football at all levels, the problems lie in both the governing body's methods, which thus far have all been open to criticism, and, just as importantly, reluctance amongst clubs to accept criticism or adopt change, all of which they regard as autocratic and overbearing interference on UEFA's behalf.

Soccernet

Sounds like a pretty decent idea?

Debt Laden Clubs To Be Banned From The UCL

QUOTE

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United could face exclusion from the Champions League - on the grounds that they hold excessive debt - under plans being drawn up by Uefa next week.

The European game's governing body has set up a working group which will meet in Geneva on Monday to discuss how to extend its licensing system and restrict the levels of debt that clubs are permitted to operate with. Currently the financial stipulations in Uefa's system are limited to bans on clubs who have outstanding debts on transfer payments. It also states that staff should be paid on time.

But the proposals being drawn up by Uefa's general secretary, David Taylor, and its president, Michel Platini, would see the system delve far deeper into the financial workings of clubs. "The ultimate sanction is not to be in our competitions," Taylor said yesterday.

He explained that debts fixed against assets, for stadium building, are considered more acceptable than those run up in the acquisition of players or for takeovers. He confirmed that this would affect clubs such as last season's Champions League finalists, United and Chelsea, and one of the semi-finalists, Liverpool, unless they significantly reduced their debts.

"It won't happen this year, it won't happen next year but, yes, that could happen in years to come," he said, speaking at the Leaders in Football conference yesterday, which coincidentally was being held at Stamford Bridge. "Some of us believe it shouldn't be an absolutely free market and we are in favour of controlled regulation. An increasing number of people in football believe we have to do more. There are some excellent examples of those who support the system, and Arsène Wenger is one of the strongest supporters of the need to do more."

It is hardly surprising that the Arsenal manager, who has labelled the trend for clubs to borrow excessively for strengthening as "financial doping", should favour the proposals. But the clubs Taylor was referring to reacted more cautiously, all demanding that they be consulted extensively before the new licensing conditions come into force. "There's been a number of proposals, mostly emanating from Uefa but also from elsewhere, looking at clubs and the amount of debt they have," said Chelsea's chairman, Bruce Buck. "It's really hard to react to those in a vacuum until you see the very specifics of what the proposals are.

"We are willing to sit down with Uefa and talk about not just debt but lots of other things. Companies in this world borrow money - that is a fact of life. I don't think there is anything wrong as a general proposition in football clubs borrowing money. But it has to be in the context of their revenue stream and the rest of their capitalisation."

Although, according to Deloitte, Chelsea have net debts of £620m, a figure derived from their most recent accounts to June 30 2007, Buck refers to the £578m that the owner, Roman Abramovich, has placed in interest-free loans as "softer than soft debt. It's as good as equity".

But United can make no such claims about their complicated structure of borrowings, amounting to £605m according to Deloitte. Although their most punitive debt - preference shares running at double-digit interest rates with hedge funds - is secured against equity belonging to the club's owner, the Glazer family, Uefa's rules would be aimed at reducing the entire debt burden.

United refused to comment yesterday but their position on Uefa's threat was made clear by the chief executive David Gill a few months ago. "The issue with debt is whether you can service it," he said. "It is not about what it is. As far as we are concerned, there is no issue." But Taylor countered: "It is not up to you, if you want to compete in our competitions."

Platini also warned England's clubs yesterday that they were in danger of losing their identity because of the influx of foreign owners into the Premier League. "Do you want in Liverpool an Arab sheikh as president with one Brazilian coach and nine or 11 African players?" he said. "Where is Liverpool in that? We have to make some rules."

The president said that the question of foreign owners - some of whom have saddled their clubs with huge debts - was a matter for the British government but that Uefa was looking at ways of introducing Europe-wide regulations. Speaking before his induction into the National Football Museum's European hall of fame he said: "You have to have identity, that is where football's popularity lies. If you bring some people from Qatar and there is no one from Liverpool or Manchester on the pitch or in the company, where is Liverpool or Manchester?"

Taken From Here

Don't quite think this is workable but like i've mentioned before this should be the way forward. For me, being in massive debt is like borrowing your rich cousin's ferrari to take part in a neighbourhood kart race.
A much much better way to even the playing field than the proposed quota on foreign players.

A decent idea, especially for them EPL chairmen

QUOTE

Remembering When Football Was Good...

When the Premier League came into force in '92 the prime fear for clubs not involved was obviously financial. This has come to pass, with four teams in the third tier in administration at present, let alone those who have already succumbed. With teams such as Wrexham in dire need of support, I have always thought it would serve to credit the Premier League if some kind of percentage of revenue from each club is dispersed amongst the have nots of English football.
I know it's not their job as such but surely a modicum of decency would dictate that teams perishing with debts that barely total seven figures could look to the more illustrious or even in some cases just plain richer clubs for help? Should another breakaway league be implemented then all that will happen is more teams will end up with their neck in a noose and the top 10 thinking 'we're alright Jack'.

I was watching a video of the WC '90, the last great World Cup, the final aside, and my friends and I were talking about how great football used to be in the 80's (I know it's more romanticised but still) - £5 on the turnstiles for a Park Lane ticket and a game that whilst on the cusp of selling its soul was still very much a people's game. It saddens me that I can legitimately think football is so far gone now, it'll take a fans movement of immensity to get it even halfway back.

Daniel Mallerman

Instead of the rich thinking of more ways to make themselves even richer, why not help out clubs in the lower divisions?
The EPL cannot survive on its own without the lower leagues. For instance, without the Championship there would be no relegation What fun would that be?
Throughout his career, Schmeichel scored 11 goals, a great feat for a keeper. He is the most capped player for the Denmark national team, with 129 games and one goal between 1987 and 2001. Apart from Euro 92, he played for his country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and three additional European Championship tournaments. He captained the national team in 30 matches.

Today, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of football. The IFFHS ranked Schmeichel among the top ten keepers of the 20th century in 2000 and in 2001, Schmeichel won a public poll held by Reuters, when the majority of the 200,000 participants voted him as the best goalkeeper ever, ahead of Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks. In 2003, Schmeichel was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his impact on the English game. In March 2004, he was named as one of the "125 greatest living footballers", at the FIFA 100 celebrations.

He holds the record for the greatest clean sheets-to-games ratio in the Premiership with 42% of the games he played in the Premiership ending without his team conceding.

QUOTE(clayclws @ Jan 23 2008, 03:51 PM)

Oh c'mon. I know "back in the days" is a great term to use, but did they face the same challenge as the current crop of goalkeepers? The sport has advanced, and so have the players. You really can't Pele and Maradona to Ronaldo or Kaka because they are from different era. They maybe greats once upon a time, but that doesn't mean that they could do the same if they are in the current generation (and as young as before). But we wouldn't know that because there's no way we can travel back into that era, cryogenically freeze or kidnap one of the greats at his prime, and then bring him to the present to compete with the current crop of greats. I see Schmeichel as the best goalkeeper in the 90s.

I would say now that Cantona is still better than Ronaldo, but Ronaldo is improving and has a high chance to surpass his No.7 predecessor. But, we can't see the future, so let's talk the present, shall we?

QUOTE(madmoz @ Jan 23 2008, 03:56 PM)

Which is why one should never say best ever. I try to avoid using records as a gauge of a players calibre. I mean Reina has won the Golden Gloves 2 seasons in succession but no one rates him. Hehe..

I think everyone has their rights to say who is the best... but it's just an opinion and not an absolute statement. I mean, same goes to when you say you support the club because you say it's the best club in the world.. It's just your personal own opinion.

I have mates who say Grobelaar is the best and I won't challenge their statement.
On football fan-ism

Normally I'd stay away from Soccernet editorial as if it was the dreaded plague but this one from Dale Johnson is quite interesting.

QUOTE

The sanitisation of football

Sir Alex Ferguson's attack on the 'funeral' that is the atmosphere at the 'Theatre of Dreams' last week was not the first time someone from within Manchester United has criticised their fans. Roy Keane was an expert at it.

The United boss was bemoaning the fact that the supporters were not able to whip themselves into a frenzy for a turgid New Year's Day affair with many purely content to let their hangover seep away. But football's own hangover is starting to set in.

With its crisp image of shiny new stadia, superstar international players and wall-to-wall television coverage, the modern game is barely recognisable from that of 20 years ago.

The game needed to be dragged out of the dark ages kicking and screaming. That it took the Hillsborough disaster to force clubs to spend money on their grounds is a sad fact of history, with the Taylor Report making recommendations regarding the provision of safety.

Of course, the advent of the Premier League and the megabucks brought in through television deals helped to speed up the process. And the game's new image, with the muddy memories of hooliganism a thing of the past, enabled a new breed of savvy football administrators to turn from the bread and butter of everyday fans to the corporate sector.

Other sports had been dining out on this golden goose for some time but football's ugly image had made it difficult for any club to chase the dollar.

Few of football's 'new fans' will be able to comprehend standing on crumbling terraces with barely an inch of room to move, shifting with the sway of the crowd involuntarily. There's no doubt that such conditions were an accident waiting to happen in many respects but what do we have now? A sanitised game where people are only too happy to pay their money for a good, comfortable seat and a nice view. Is that really what the game is about?

With terraces long gone, passion seems to be following suit.

Sir Alex's problem, just as it is for most of us, is that he remembers what it used to be like. Of course, the fervent supporters who live and die by their team remain. But now, rather than meeting up at the same old crush barrier behind the goal, these fans have their own seat to find and meet up under the stand at half-time. The natural swell of vocal support has disappeared.

Do people really care anymore? Are they just happy to watch their team play? At some grounds today, for large portions of matches, it's like watching the game on television. You could hear a pin drop.

People find it all too easy to lay the blame at the door of the corporate supporter, claiming they have taken the seats away from the real fans. There's very little truth in this as many clubs created new areas for their fat cat friends.

It's the game's 'new fans' which are the real problem. These are the supporters which have come into the game - both in this country and from overseas - due to the flashy image the Premier League has portrayed. As gates at many clubs are falling it's the old timers who are deserting their teams, disillusioned with the 'product' in 2008, while the Premier League generation still show up for their 90 minutes of 'entertainment'. But these fans have not created the atmosphere at games - they were simply filling the seats of increased capacity.

Football is not the working class game it was 20 years ago and England itself is very different. There's no longer the same tribal aspect of following a team. The days of solidarity, strike action and the almost universal hatred of the Thatcher regime, which itself preyed on supporters, are forgotten. People seem to care about very little these days, so why should football be any different?

The average age of a supporter in a ground in England is now 43 while only nine percent of fans are under 24. Clearly that is not sustainable in the long term.

The 'rich are getting richer' aspect of the English game is also turning people away. But the 'big four' continue to sell out week-in, week-in and it's the other clubs which are experiencing lower gates.

Granted, it costs more than ever to watch a football match, but at the same time people are paid more than ever before. Manchester United fans' complaints about prices mean very little as they are one of the cheaper clubs in the division, yet they have never finished outside the top three.

Aston Villa this season have moved away supporters from behind the goal - meaning the team will always be attacking its own fans. They are heralding it as a big success to improving the atmosphere.

The only way to give the game back to the fans - and there's no doubt many feel disenfranchised - is to bring back the terraces. That's not a call to rip up all the improvements football grounds have seen - but terracing will encouraging the atmosphere back.

Many Manchester United fans hit back at Sir Alex, claiming they fear being ejected from Old Trafford if they stand to sing and chant. The problem with that is you cannot get excited when you're sat down. It's only natural to be on your feet when you're getting behind your team. Fans need taking out of the comfort zone to rediscover why they love the game.

The Bundesliga still has terracing areas for fans - the German FA insists ten percent of capacity must be reserved for standing - and enjoys the largest average attendance figures in Europe. The bigger clubs have removable seating so it can be fixed into place for European games.

The Football Supporters' Federation and Stand Up Sit Down have been campaigning for a return to terraces for some time - and it may be the only way for football to rediscover itself. Whether they can persuade the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Football Licensing Authority to ditch the rule which forces all clubs in the top two divisions to be all-seater grounds is a different matter

Is the EPL a victim of its own success? I'm definitely AGAINST having terraces back (even more so being a long time Liverpool supporter) but not being allowed to stand and celebrate a goal is harsh. I last attended a game in the UK (at Old Trafford at that) more than ten years ago and unless i'm mistaken, the stewards were less harsh back then. You could stand, but you had to place your bum back on the seat ASAP or the stewards will threaten to make mincemeat out of you. Enforcement was less harsh at places like Maine Road and Stockport though.

The again, my 'local' team - Sabah used to play in Stadium Penampang while our main stadium was being refurbished. A field and four fences and a grandstand. We stood on the elevated sides surrounding the field. The footie was, minus Olleranshaw dismal as always, but we did sway and cheer our heart out - and we also pelted 'kuda tua' Zainal Abidin with leftover ice (the kind you get when you buy drinks in a plastic bag)! Aside from the initial excitement of finally 'being' there I would rank my Liga Perdana experiences about as enjoyable as watching games in the UK.

Is this killing the atmosphere? I don't think so. I think it is the fans temselves that are to blame. Success brings with it a whole army of fast food fans - people who support the most glamorous 'thing' around. A quick look around this forum and you would notice that the 'lalang' far outnumber diehards like Alien, Kobe, air_mood, Jonno, Duke, JonC (etc etc - hey, there's a fair few of us here afterall). Ppl who would take their time to immerse in their chosen club's history and culture. Or in other words ppl with nothing better to do

Or is it the stadia? As the popularity of the clubs increase, so does the demand for seats. And stadiums expand. It is only possible to have that many seats around the perimetres of the field, so expansian has to be upwards. It is hard to be passionate in row ZZZ when even a Riise miskick cannot reach you, no? I've honestly seen more passion in a cricket match than some of the matches broadcast 'live' on Astro

Is football in danger of becoming like athletics - syiok sendiri where no one but the people involved really cares? Seen the old footages of Wembley or Anfield? The massive sea of fans swaying in the grainy black and white footage

p.s.
A Question About The Console Couch Forum

Although the above mentioned items are legal (and as such discussions on them is allowed), it would seem that a large majority of the users asking questions relating to these have only one thing in mind - to play pirated games (why is it that this word appears taboo in the subforum but at the same time discussing the means to the end is rampant?)
There are a good few legitimate uses for these 'homebrew' devices/programmes, but surely the number of such users constitutes a very very small minority. The mods are doing a good job of deleting any posts relating directly to piracy but the loopholes are there for all? Thread after thread of nothing but how to use custom firmware etc... all 'legal' mind you.

We recently have traders openly advertising the sale of such devices with impunity as well? More indications of our society's much maligned 'tak apa' attitude?

The Big G is finally doing something (for real or for show only nobody knows), perhaps we can tighten the rules a little bit too?

Article From The Times

Calling all LYN Pet Lovers

I have noticed a rather alarming trend here in Pets Wonderland of late, and I fear we are ostracizing the very people we are trying to help.
First and foremost, I do admire everyone's love and passion for their favourite pets. Many have done much research, and are more knowledgeable than most per shop owners. We vehemently object to greedy pet shops and unscrupulous so called backyard breeders . We watch in dismay the ignorance of many a pet owner and the poor state of animal welfare in M'sia. Although I am hardly knowledgeable, I too know of the evils of $$ and the pet trade industry.
However, we need to exercise more tact. Let's not all round on the poster who innocently asks if her pet is sick or perhaps what to do when his/her pet is about to give birth (I am not pointing fingers here, I am merely pointing out two very common questions). What will that accomplish? Nothing. The thread starter will probably get annoyed and leave the forum altogether. No ill happens to us and we happily go on our 'crusade'. But what about the poor pet? He/she has done nothing wrong but there is no one left now to offer advise to his/her ignorant owner!!!
The world is seldom black and white; there are always muddy shades of grey. The very fact that the said owner took the effort to come onto these forums to ask for advice means that deep down he/she too cares for the suffering pet, no?

We were all ignorant once, weren't we? I'd be the first to admit that my two furkids were bought from a pet shop (one with terrible repute at that ) and I'd also be the first to admit that I had, prior to getting my current two furkids, lost one due to me not knowing any better . I am thankful and lucky that there were many who gave me advice and taught me how to care for my little bundles of joy! In return I would like to help others - it is never easy but worth the try init?

I also tend to shun dog 'people' and societies. Why? Because I find that the majority of those that I have met have this 'I am mightier and holier than you attitude' which I honestly cannot stand. They might know a whole lot more than me, but f*** it - I care not to learn from them. Let's not turn ourselves into these kinda people, okie?

Let's help those who seek advice without passing judgment. After all, we all love our pets.

p.s. Damn, I'm getting old, I cannae believe how much I sound like a bloody uncle here.
