KUALA LUMPUR: Fancy owning a personalised car number plate? ARMAND 1 or AHBENG 007? Motorists will soon be able to bid for vehicle registration plates with letters, word or numbers of their choice.

Vehicle owners may also be able to buy a range of numbers such as BUKHARI 1 to 200.

However, according to sources, such personalised plates would be expensive, and certain numbers may cost hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

Road Transport Department director- general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the personalised vehicle plates service would be made available to the public once the RTD computer system is upgraded.

“We should be able to provide this service about six months after the new system is installed.” Solah said the current computer system is not able to recognise the longer series of letters that would be used in the personalised plates.

There is already a big demand for special numbers that the RTD issues through public tenders.

The introduction of the new personalised plates may affect the value of the current number plates, although Solah declined to comment on the issue.

Revenue from the sale of the special number plates has skyrocketed from RM36 million in 1999 to RM141 million last year.

The sale of these plates is now the second highest source of revenue for the RTD.

Road tax was the highest source of revenue for the department last year at RM1.8 billion of the RM2.64 billion collected.

Revenue from the sale of special number plates is equivalent to 35 per cent of the RTD’s operating and development costs each year. Money collected from the sale of the plates goes to the government instead of the RTD.

All special registration numbers are sold through public tender.

The highest price paid for a number was RM200,900 in 2006 for the number TAN 1.

Other numbers fetching high prices include JJJ 1 which went for RM140,000, and WMW 1 at RM104,500. According to Solah, the value of number plates differed from state to state.

“For example, the number 1 in Kuala Lumpur goes for between RM60,000 and RM80,000 while the same number in Malacca would go for RM35,000 to RM45,000.” The digit 1 is always the highest priced number in any state, followed by the digits 2, 3 and 8.

Double digit numbers, such as 11, 22, 33 and 88 sell for between RM5,000 and RM15,000 each.

Over the years, some other numbers have been highly sought after because they resemble names, professions and likeable words.

Among them are RA 21 (Razi), RA 15 (Rais), DAV 10 (David), AFR 17 (Afrit), TAN14 (Tania), MAN 15 (Manis), JEL 1 (Jeli), DAN 1 (Dani), NAD 14 (Nadia), MAF 14 (Mafia), JED 1 (Jedi), DR 6161 (Dr Gigi) and DU 17 (Duit).

Solah said the RTD had issued special numbers to local car and motorcycle manufacturers in the past and for special events.

These include the series Proton, Perodua, Persona, Waja and Kriss as well as the series XIIINAM, XI ASEAN and XXX IDB and X OIC.

However, the issuance of these special series has been discontinued.

Initial calculations suggested that asteroid 1997 XF11 will pass dangerously close to the Earth and would result in its destruction. However, current analyses suggest that it will come no closer than 0.00636 AU (951,000 km, 591,000 mile) or about 2.5 times farther than the moon. If these latest predictions are correct then the probability that the asteroid will impact the Earth is effectively zero. Just in case the initial predictions were correct it would be safer to stay indoors on this day.

2280 Quran Code

“I don’t need to shout at them to do follow my instructions and like me, they just have to realize that health is important,” said Curtis, who used to be underweight.

Curtis also added that despite the cultural differences among Asian participants, all of them are receptive to training and some try to accommodate religious concerns, like wearing a proper fitness outfit, for example.

Curtis noted that “low self-esteem” was the common factor among contestants and that boosting their confidence alone was a good motivation for them to lose weight and get their lives back to healthy one.

Blue team trainer Dave Nuku, meanwhile, is the personal trainer in the movie of Lord of the Rings and the author of the book “Body First”.

During auditions held around Asia, one frequent reason people cited for joining the show is to prove that change is possible.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The use of contaminated fish to make crackers, a favourite snack in the state, has been identified as among the sources of cholera outbreak Terengganu, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

He said that fish samples taken from two cracker factories tested positive for the vibrio cholerae bacteria.

The fish could have been brought in from a neighbouring country through the Chendering fisheries complex which supplied fish to Kuala Terengganu and Marang, he said.

"Samples from raw chickens taken at the Gong Pauh wholesale market in Wakaf Mempelam as well as samples from two ice factories also tested positive for the bacteria," he told reporters after visiting patients at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital here.

He said that 20 premises comprising 11 ice factories, two cracker factories and the rest eatery outlets, had been ordered closed. Liow also described the cholera outbreak in the state, which was detected two weeks ago, as serious.

He said that hospitals had been receiving news cases on a daily basis, including 85 people with acute gastroenteritis admitted on Friday.

He said that so far 621 patients were admitted due to acute gastroenteritis.

Up to 7am Saturday, 482 patients were still being treated in hospitals, including 22 carriers and 138 tested positive for the disease.

He urged the people not to take cholera for granted as it could result in death and other complications. Meanwhile, a cholera outbreak is also reported in SEMPORNA, Sabah, but the situation is under control and not alarming, said Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Datuk Nasir Tun Sakaran.

He said that the authorities had taken precautionary measures including closing down the Semporna fish market which was believed to be the place where the outbreak started.

"I was told that so far 18 people are down with cholera in Semporna and they are now recovering in hospitals," he told reporters after visiting the fish market Saturday. He urged the public to observe hygiene and cooperate with the authorities to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Ibu bapa terutama mereka yang beragama Islam perlu memberi perhatian serius kerana peratusan alkohol dalam minuman ringan ini melebihi kandungan (alkohol) yang terkandung dalam setin ‘beer’ iaitu 5 peratus saja.

“Kajian yang dilakukan CAP mendapati lebih 50 peratus murid dan pelajar sekolah kini menyukai minuman ini. Lebih serius ia mudah didapati di pasar raya mini dan kedai serbaneka.

“Pejabat CAP dihujani panggilan daripada golongan ibu bapa yang risau dengan penjualan minuman ringan itu kerana ada di antaranya mendakwa anak-anak mereka berasa pening lalat selepas meminumnya,” katanya di Balai Berita di sini, semalam.

Selain itu, pihak CAP turut mendapat aduan daripada pihak sekolah yang mengatakan segelintir murid dan pelajar membawa minuman ini ke sekolah untuk tujuan mengadakan jamuan hari jadi.

Menurutnya, tinjauan CAP mendapati terdapat lebih 25 jenama minuman ringan berperisa alkohol dijual di pasaran negara ini.

“Undang-undang negara jelas menyatakan sebarang minuman yang mengandungi alkohol dilarang penjualannya secara terbuka kepada golongan berumur 18 tahun ke bawah.

“Tetapi murid dan pelajar sekolah secara biasanya tidak gemar membaca kandungan label dan terus minum sebaik saja membelinya.

“Justeru, CAP bimbang dengan perkara ini kerana ia tahap permulaan untuk mereka minum arak apabila meningkat dewasa,” katanya.

What is the point of marriage?

There was a coincidence today that 2 of my friends asked me this same question.

The first friend had been married for around 5 years, blessed with 2 kids, but always fight with her partner over every little things.
Added in with involvement of each of their parents (whom backs their own kids), their relationship is really turning bad everyday.
They are thinking of getting a divorce.

My second friend, on a different situation, is planning to get married.
He is the younger brother to my first friend.
Upon seeing how his big sister is in a bad scenario, and how his parents are also involved in this, he now have doubts.
He is thinking, in the beginning of marriage, everything goes smooth with love & affection, but over the years, things *might* just go berserk.

Both talked to me on separate occasions today (first friend on phone, second friend at tea break).
And thus both asked me on what is the point of marriage.

I didn't know what to answer them.
I told them that, added with a secondary answer that I am not married yet.
Not a very helping answer but both of my friends just wanted someone to listen to them, and that's what I did anyway.
