problem with acer 4310

i'm having a problem with my house mate's acer's aspire 4310.

windows can boot, only the background picture can be seen.
then windows will revert back to the blue page where you choose the user you wish to log in with.
never had this option turned on before and whenever i choose the user i want to log on with (there's only one option), it 'loads my personal settings' and proceeds to saving my personal settings soon after.

the first time i tried to boot with safe mode, it worked and i performed an antivirus scan using AVG.
found a virus which had something to do with the windows user login file. forgot the specific name for it.

the virus was cleaned but now, not only is the problem still there, i can't access both the administrator or the user in safe mode....

tried to repair windows, but failed miserably... had SATA drivers ready too. used multiple XP CDs. couldn't fix nor reinstall or format. [pirated ones ]

by the way, it came with vista basic. my house mate had sent the laptop to be reformated and installed with XP by some computer shop. ran smoothly for a few months till only recently. supposedly a backup of the vista files was created but i couldn't do anything with the DVD....

for graduates majoring in biotech and chemistry, the prospects are relatively the same... either they work in labs or turn out to be lecturers....

was wondering which would have a better edge when it comes to career prospects and what different careers paths each course provide....

problem with MsExcel

i'm having problems with my excel files.... the decimal points all appear as boxes like those you see when it is an unknown character.... previously everything was fine.. till recently.... i dun recall installing anything or uninstalling anything.... btw, my computer is running on a network and everyone else does not encounter this problem when opening the files....

please help.... thanks in advance....

i was thinking that maybe a colour code can be implemented in the garage sales forum and it's sub forums for the topics, differentiating the [WTS] and [WTB] topics for easier and quicker references....

tasks switches when saving MsWord documents

when i have multiple windows open and i save a Microsoft Word document, it switches tasks with another window.

this gives me a tad of a probelm cuz i tend to print the wrong documents after saving when i dun pay attention...

and on my other com, the same thing happens but instead, it happens after i print the document.

can anyone help ??
