Fuse ratings on power cords?

Power cords all come with fuses (unlike American power cords?). Just to clear the air, I'm not asking about audiophile grade fuses or whatever.

I have no background on electronics and what I may be asking could sound completely daft to you. I checked the fuse on my powercords (cheap, generic ones they are!) and they are rated 3A, 5A and 10A. Does it matter what the rating is? Would I be 'bottlenecking' the current going into my equipment? Should I change all of it to 13A fuses? Or even better, buy cords which does not require fuses?

Silly, I know. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Why are we more attracted to our own race?

Marriages are more often of same race. Common sense genetics would tell you that a Chinese marrying an Indian would be superior 'genetically' to a Chinese marrying a Chinese, because at some grand level, there is a reduced chance of inbreeding by marrying outside your race.

So why is our preference skewed?

I found a diamond ring in my communal kitchen.

I'm thinking it's diamond because the inscription on the underside of the ring says Au750 (which I'm guessing is white gold). You wouldn't mount a cheap rock on a white gold ring, right?

Anyhoo, should I:
i) leave a note saying I found a ring and return it
ii) wait for the owner to leave a note in the kitchen asking if anyone has found it
iii) pawn it at the jeweller's tomorrow

edit: poll failed.

If weightlifting makes you age quicker

Note to readers and people replying: This is only for discussion purposes. I don't intend to sway anyone away from bodybuilding/weightlifting. I myself have not been affected by this knowledge. I still go to the gym frequently, eat loads and sweat it out!

--------------

To start off, biogerontology is a fairly new area of research. Experimental studies in model organisms (C. elegans, D. melanogaster, M. musculus) have shown that:

1. A higher metabolism causes you to age quicker. This is consistent with the most popular theory of ageing: the free radical theory of ageing. The basic idea of the theory is that a higher metabolism results in greater energy expenditure. As we all know the powerhouse of the cell (so fondly named by all biology students) is the mitochondria. Energy is generated via the electron transport chain (ETC). However, coupling in the ETC is not perfect and thus, the generation of free radicals that can potentially damage DNA, protein, lipids etc.

The free radical damage is a viscious cycle. Once the mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) is damaged, the poor repair mechanisms causes mutations to accumulate with age. As you may be able to deduce by now, increased energy expenditure by a higher metabolic rate _would_ in fact cause you to possibly age quicker. This is assuming that this theory is true.

2. Corroborating the idea of free radical theory of ageing is the rate of living theory, whereby your lifespan is measured by oxygen consumption in litres/kg (also known as life energy potential - LEP) throughout your entire lifespan. It has been speculated that mammals have a constant value for the life energy potential. This was demonstrated in squirrels and horses. Despite huge differences in maximum lifespan, the LEP for both animals were about the same (60,000 l/kg).

Hence, a higher metabolic rate would limit your lifespan because you would reach your life energy potential quicker.

3. Larger animals have shorter lifespan. Big dogs die quicker. Birds live longer for their size. A study of baseball players (controlled for affluence, a major factor in today's measure of lifespan) showed that BMI was inversely related to lifespan. For every ~kg, there was a reduction in lifespan of 5 months.

4. Dietary restriction (DR) was shown to extend lifespan in model organisms. It was demonstrated that DR delays the onset of late life diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disorders. DR also slows age related decline in blood glucose control, fecundity, muscle mass, DNA repair and learning ability, to name a few. However, this has not been successfully demonstrated in humans, although it should be noted that Okinawans from Japan have the highest number of centenarians (or super-centenarians) to date. Their diet is largely responsible for this. They eat in moderation (children 60% less and adults 20% less when compared to world wide data).

--------------

So that's a summary of what you need to know for discussion. I didn't quote any papers, but if there are specific parts that you wish to refer to, I can find quotes although I may be slow with that kind of response.

My question is, knowing what you know now, would this affect your love for weightlifting and the dietary requirements that come alongside it?

It certainly hasn't affected mine, I would like to know your opinion on the matter. Also, don't show me a picture of Nubret.

Hello,

I believe this to be an inherent problem in the new Windows XP update.

I need help recovering my internet, otherwise I would just resort to formatting.

I updated my Windows XP on 17th Apr 2009, rebooted when I came home and all internet connection failed. My local media server which is accessible by simply http://127.0.0.1:9000 is ALSO unavailable to me. When 'troubleshooting' the problem using Windows Live Messenger's troubleshooter, it looks as if all my Key Ports are blocked off.

What can I do?

Tried ping Google.com but no reply (timed out). However, I'm currently connected using a public computer @ my uni (same connection I'm using in my room) and the connection doesn't let me ping anything either.

I tried reversing all the updates, but to no avail. Moreover, I took a desperate attempt to revert to XP SP2 (from XP SP3) and that didn't solve any problems. I'm still stuck without the internet.

-WS

Do your cardio.

So I thought I'd post a thread about what I've been reading about.

Cardio is good for you, bulking or cutting.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/satter2.htm

QUOTE

So to bring this to a close, doing cardio during a "bulking" phase to stay lean or lose some extra fat will only magnify your efforts in the gym. Cardio increases your ability to store glycogen with less carbs and calories, it conditions our body to suppers catabolic hormones for longer periods of time and it not only sets the muscle building stage buy producing an abundance of anabolic hormone, but it keeps
the process going at a high rate 24/7.

Extra reading from the same author : http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/satter3.htm

>>>>>>>

Alan Aragon on HIIT, LISS and fed vs fasted cardio: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=747976

In summary, fasted cardio is a bad idea.

QUOTE

• At low intensities (25-50% VO2 max), carbs during exercise reduce fat oxidation compared to fasted trainees.
• At moderate intensities (63-68% VO2 max) carbs during exercise may reduce fat oxidation in untrained subjects, but do not reduce fat oxidation in trained subjects for at least the first 80-120 minutes of exercise.
• Carbohydrate during exercise spares liver glycogen, which is among the most critical factors for anticatabolism during hypocaloric & other conditions of metabolic stress. This protective hepatic effect is absent in fasted cardio.
• At the established intensity level of peak fat oxidation (~63% VO2 max), carbohydrate increases performance without any suppression of fat oxidation in trained subjects.

LISS or HIIT? Doesn't matter. As long as you're doing it. Personally I'd pick HIIT.

QUOTE

If you're pressed for time, and you can do HIIT without any delayed onset muscle soreness overlap (by virtue of doing a low frequency of HIIT), and you can tolerate it joint-wise & heart-wise, and you hate spending time doing cardio to begin with, then do HIIT. On the other hand, if you have the time to allot for low-intensity steady state (LISS), and you do a particularly high volume & magnitude of resistance training which raises potential recovery conflicts posed by a high frequency of HIIT, then do LISS. If you're somewhere in between the aforementioned 2 camps and you don't have a specific preference or tolerance limit, do both types on either a cyclical, rotational, or even combined basis. Also, it can't be overstated that unless you undergo a very gradual progression towards the the musculoskeletal tolerance for something like sprinting, you can get hurt pretty bad & there goes your productive training for several weeks.

>>>>>>>

Great thread with many good responses by Layne Norton about fed-state cardio, pyramiding cardio here: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=99420

>>>>>>>

Roundtable about Cardio in general : http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_articl...rdio_roundtable

>>>>>>>

To sum it up: Do your cardio. It doesn't matter if you prefer LISS or HIIT. What matters is that you're willing to do it. It's not gonna work if you hate what you do. Feed yourself before going.
Suggestion for certain forums to be invisible

Tried to put as much in the topic/description as I can.

Anyway, I suggest to have certain forums moderated to be invisible to certain members. Ideally towards members with a lower post count. I know this would be terribly disadvantageous as the forum is a good knowledgebase for a lot of us. Lately, there has been a lot of crap going around, particularly in the H&F section.

How about moderation by post-count, or reputation (if that could be implemented as well)? Perhaps if that is too extreme that the forum be visible only to high posters or senior members, perhaps posting privileges in forums where misinformation can be particularly damaging be limited to senior members and reliable posters only. Not only does this reduce the need for moderation but the level of contribution becomes more valuable as well.

I don't know how feasible this would be, just throwing it out there.
