We actually have a PCI PhysX cards from the days of Ageia and we thought itâ€™d be interesting to put it up against a Geforce card to see how both perform against each other.

There were a few unexpected surprises that we ran into, first of all we noticed that the Ageia solution was unable to render as many fluid particles as the Geforce option, which in this case was a Geforce 8800GT. In fact, it couldnâ€™t even do half the amount of fluid particles that the Geforce 8800 GT card was able to do.

Now this might just have been down to faster hardware, but we noticed that the render was stuttering on the Ageia hardware and we couldnâ€™t quite figure out why, as this wasnâ€™t an issue when using the Geforce PhysX option in the drivers.

Running Fraps revealed that the Ageia card only managed about 15fps while the Geforce 8800GT was doing on average about 24fps. Again, we simply put this down to the Geforce solution being faster. Then we happened to glance over at the CPU usage widget in Windows Vista and noticed that there was a massive difference in CPU usage between the two.

The Ageia card only used between 30 to 40 percent of the CPU, taking into account that at idle at the desktop about 20 percent of the CPU is being used. Switching to the Geforce 8800GT the CPU usage jumped up to between 75 to 80 percent and at times even higher.

Even running the demo in pure software mode doesnâ€™t use as much CPU as the Geforce PhysX option, although the demo is vastly slower using the software mode, which relies purely on the CPU. Oddly enough the software mode would produce the same amount of fluid particles as the Geforce card, no matter if the Geforce or Ageia option was ticked in the drivers.

This makes us wonder if Nvidia is playing fair and square, does the GPU actually do all the PhysiX calculations or are Nvidia offloading a whole bunch of calculations onto the CPU. Is this just a demo issue, or is there something more to this? At this moment we donâ€™t have an explanation as to what is going on, but weâ€™re sure that weâ€™ve just stirred up yet another hornetsâ€™ nest.

It should be equipped with 8 cores on the same die, a cache of 512 KB L2 by heart and a cache of 16 MB L3 One of the main characteristics Sandy Bridge will be adding the game 'Instruction AVX (Advanced Vectors Extensions), formerly known as the VSSE.

â€¢ Haswell (HSW)

Haswell is expected to have these features:

22 nm process
8 cores by default
Entirely new cache design
Revolutionary power saving systems
Possible on-package vector coprocessors
The addition of the FMA instruction set

Planned for 2012 or earlier, the family CPU Haswell succeed architecture Sandy Bridge. GravÃ©s to 22 nm, they should include 8-core default, a whole new architecture caches, mechanisms "revolutionary" energy saving and the possibility of board coprocessors vector processing in a single package. CÃ´tÃ© instruction set, the sea serpent FMA (Fused Multiply-Add), which allows for simultaneous operation of multiplication and addition via the same instruction, should be implemented.

No other information has filtered by Haswell, but since we are talking about a CPU to be released in 3 generations, it is not surprising. The design of the processor is still in the early stages.

Despite the fact that AMD is half dead because of its tiny CPU market share, the company is currently making the preparations for a worth-mentioning Nehalem competitor. The chip manufacturer's upcoming 45-nanometer chips in the Deneb and Propus families will undergo a significant micro-architecture redesign, also known as K10.5 Rev. D.

The D silicon stepping in the 45-nanometer process will be code-named Hydra and is alleged to be AMD's true response to Intel's Nehalem CPU micro-architecture. This silicon stepping will introduce an L2 cache level of 1MB per core, which means that the upcoming processors will enjoy twice as much cache memory over the existing K10.5 silicon.

More than that, the new micro-architecture will also bring the much-hyped High-K metal gate technology that has been jointly developed by AMD and IBM using 45nm SOI (silicon-over-insulator) cores. The first 45-nanometer SOI cores, however, will be introduced earlier, in both Deneb and Propus chips.

Hydra will also bring a huge, 6 MB L3 cache pool that will be shared among all the processor's cores. The new chip is expected to hit the market in at least eight-core configurations, although the company is likely to introduce them as eight-core native designs, rather than the recently unveiled MCM (Multi Chip Module).

As far as the brute computing performance is concerned, it is estimated that Hydra processors will be able to deliver stock core frequencies of over 3 GHz.

It is currently unknown whether it will be as overclockable as Intel's counterparts, but this is highly unlikely to happen, given AMD's conservative stance when it comes to tweaking its chips. Intel took the same approach with the Nehalems, and rumor has it that only the Bloomfield-based high-end offerings will be ale to go beyond the default clock speed.

The Hydra chips will arrive on the market in mid-2009 or even later and in the meantime, Intel's Nehalems will be the only high-end alternative.
