6GB DDR2 RAM

planning to get more RAM for my system tomorrow, but with the RAM price increasing, i plan to get one stick first, but then, i will mean that i have to use 3 slots instead of 4 (leave one empty for future upgrade just in case RAM price drops). will it be possible to do this configuration?

2 x 2GB DDR2 Aeneon PC6400 RAM
and another stick of
1 x 2GB DDR2 Kingston PC6400 RAM
with one more empty slot

possible? main question is, erm, can we utilize 3 out of 4 slots, or must we utilize either 2 or 4 slots at one time? i am using a 64-bit OS so no worry abt limitation here
thanks!

A RM1k Rig

Hey peeps, I am helping my friend to get a RM1k rig, main purpose is for Skyping, onlining, light gaming (like those mahjong or puzzle games) <s>and BT-ing</s> I am thinking of the following build, but would appreciate further suggestion:

<s>Intel E7500 = RM410
Gigabyte G41MS2L = RM199
2 x 2GB DDR2 PC6400 RAM = RM114 x 2 = RM228 (darn expensive nowadays )
808GB SATA2 32MB Western Digital HDD = RM229
LG 22x SATA DVDRW = RM74
ATX Casing with PSU = RM90

Total = RM1230

I was thinking of getting a 3D card, 9600GT at least, but it will not be useful for the stated purpose. And with the specs stated above, a good expensive PSU seems unnecessary as well. LCD, keyboard, mouse, and speakers are not required.</s>

Revision:

Pentium Dual Core E5300 = RM235
2GB + 1GB DDR2 Kingston RAM = RM110 + RM60 = RM170 (more RAM, less laggy, doubt that my friend will want to do future upgrade)
ASUS P5QPL-AM (G41) = RM205 (not much difference from G31's price, might as well get G41 with better built in card)
Western Digital 500GB SATA2 32MB = RM185
Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 460W = RM159 (or should I take Silverstone Strider ST400? or Acbel E2 510W?)
LG DVDRW SATA = RM75
Cap Ayam Casing = RM90 (do the sell it cheaper without cap ayam PSU?)
Gigabyte Keyboard and Mouse set = RM30

Total RM1149

Further inputs will be utmost appreciated. Thank you

Windows Firewall blocking Microsoft Downloads

Greetings,

I have this problem after I reformatted my Vista to install Windows 7 RC1. In RC1, I could not update my Windows using Windows Update nor download anything from Microsoft sites without disabling Windows Firewall (even without 3rd party firewall/antivirus installed). I ignored the problem thinking that it was some bugs plaguing the unfinished OS.

However, the same thing happened again today after I decided to reformat my Win7 and reinstalled my old Vista. Similar to Win7, I could not download Windows Live Messenger from the official site. Windows Update was unable to check for updates, and Vista SP2 file cannot be downloaded from Microsoft site. All these were solved by just disabling Windows Firewall. I have tried using the Microsoft Fix-It (which was supposed to reset Windows Update settings, officially from Microsoft) but it did not fix the problem.

Any help, guys?

[WTA] No OS Found

Posting this on behalf of a friend:

The laptop was running fine, but suddenly an error message popped up, and the system shut down. Then when it is switched on again, the Windows couldn't load (managed to get to loading screen, but after waited for few minutes, an error message saying OS not found came up).

Today I went to see for myself, the error message did not come up, but after the loading screen, could see a brief BSOD and the system auto-restarted. I tried to reformat the machine (or at least do Windows recovery), but at the stage when the setup was checking the hard disk, which took really long, another error message came up: Wrong CD Inserted tried with 2 copies of installation discs but same problem occurred.

My thoughts:

1. RAM problem
2. HDD problem

So what do you guys think? Could it still be software problem? If it is so, any way to save the laptop?
Otherwise, may I know if the shops in Low Yat Plaza do provide laptop repairing service? Do they charge service fee for inspecting the laptop? Normally how long does it take to fix a laptop? And lastly, which shop is recommended? I know Viewnet gives good price and service but I am not sure about laptop fixing. Thanks

Edifier E3100 vs M3100SF

Ok, I know E3100 is good for music listening, auditioned it myself, satisfied with the sound quality
However, there is a latest addition into Edifier's product range: M3100SF (ok-la, no latest). I read that it is an improvement over E3100, and the price difference is not much, RM20 at best. Any comment about M3100SF? Which is a better buy? Or is there a better choice for that price range?

The usage: 50% music, 35% games, 15% movies. Thanks

Power On

Came across this desktop PC of a friend of mine, has trouble booting it up.

1. First few tries of pressing the power button managed to turn the power on for awhile (2 to 3 seconds), then it just died off, leaving only the Power LED light on (and also the ethernet port LED).

2. After few more attempts, managed to boot into windows, but the windows had to load for abnormally long (at the windows loading screen), after waiting for few minutes, got into windows, but then the power died off by itself again, leaving only the power LED and ethernet port LED on (just like (1)).

3. Then did few more attempts to switch on the machine, first few attempts stuck like (1), but then, after awhile, managed to get into windows loading screen, but after loading for almost 5 minutes, showed no sign getting into windows, and CPU emit weird faint sound (not sure from which part, but certainly not PSU)

4. Gave up, 100% sure is hardware problem. I am suspecting that the mainboard is the culprit. Anyone has the experience to confirm my so-called hypothesis?

5. Again, no reformat BS, thanks

Blank Screen

Ok, here's what happened. A kid was punching the keyboard keys like a toy and the screen went blank all the sudden. Did a reset, has display at POST and WinXP loading screen, but blank again once load into WinXP (without any sound as well, and has some message saying Display Cable Disconnected or something on the monitor). Tried Safe Mode (yes, can enter into Safe Mode) to change the display resolution to 800x600, and tried System Restore, did not help. Is there anything that could be done to fix the problem?

P/S: No REFORMAT please. Thanks

Budget Amp

As per topic, I am currently looking for a budget headphone amp to pair with KSC-75, but I am not sure which amp is better with the earphone stated. Can any master here provide guidance? Thanks

Or should I grab CMOY? some recommended me CMOY by littleghost (RM135). while it does look ... err ... exotic, i read that some people claimed CMOY sounds better than any of the retail amps stated, PA2v2 included, is this the truth?

Random Lag in Vista

Greetings,

I noticed that my OS lags randomly, while initially everything was fine, the problem would come for no apparent reason. The lag is noticeable when I minimize or maximize or even move the opened window around, it seems that the animation is not smooth. The problem is not only limited with what I have described here I could only fix this problem by refreshing my Windows Experience Index score, but the problem would return later. Is there any fix for this issue? System specs as stated, I can confirm that it is not system requirement issue as my brother's older system can run Vista just fine. And please no reformat/change to XP advice. Thank you
