After happily playing with the RMBOX and RMHDD......time to look for new gadget......

This time around is a new chipset (i think): C2 Microsystems C1100 or ??

Zinwell (taiwan) come out with a new product --> ZIN-5003.......(around RM450 - RM500)

However, the price is still very steep......for RM500.....you can almost get a ATOM based PC (without Hard disk)......

But don't worry, since Made In Taiwan is expensive, we can always go to China......
China side actually have the similiar product (~ RM300) and reaching the final phase to rollout......so stay tune........

I purchase this product mainly for RMVB playback.....all those TVB, Japanese TV series and some variety show....not need to watch on PC and do conversion.

The hardware:
1. Chipset = AML7228
2. Input = 2.5" IDE or SATA hard disk, external USB hard disk, thumb drive, card reader. Doesn't support USB DVD/CD drive
3. Output = VGA (max: 1280x1024), S-Video, composite and component, coaxial audio output

My Setup:
1. Dell 2007FP Monitor (connect using S-Video)
2. 2.5" 20GB IDE internal HD, 3.5" 80GB external USB HD
3. RMHDD
Trying to use VGA for connection but the picture quality not so good 'coz my LCD native resolution is 1600x1200 and the RMHDD support max. resolution of 1280x1024. So using S-Video for input.

Playback:
RMVB files --> test most of my rmvb collection.....working perfectly, even the dual audio RMVB files, just press the audio button in the remote control to switch between left/right audio (some of the HDD rmvb player doesn't play dual audio RMVB files). The spec. said it support 1280x720 rmvb playback......i don't have so high resolution rmvb files, so didn't test

mkv files ---> doesn't support

xvid,divx avi files --> doesn't really test.....just test on some CSI tv series and movie....working

mp3 files --> ok so far

Not much to test, just watch watch and watch all those rmvb files....

To conclude....pros, cons and bugs.

Pros.
1. Support IDE and SATA hard disk plus external USB devices (except USB DVD/CD ROM)
2. Multiple and standard output connection ....i.e. VGA, S-Video, composite, component and even a digital coaxial output
3. Big remote control - this is a must. i have used some of the small remote control on other hdd player before....super painful
4. time select and playback position memorized.

Cons.
1. Little bit pricey (RM240).......RM180 is the ideal price for me.....
2. Remote Control have Chinese word only. This is not a problem for me but for those who doesn't know Chinese....hmm...
3. It doesn't support external USB CD/DVD ROM.....may be is the chipset limitation
4. Doesn't support mkv ??.....am i too greedy?
5. subtitle too small on avi playback --- waiting for new firmware

Bugs
1. Some of the (filename) chinese character didn't show.....
2. Plugin the USB cable to the USB-port only will not detect the internal hardisk

Philips HDMI dvd/divx player with free HDMI cable ==> RM259......

The 320GB per plate HD for WD really make the price go cheaper.....the 1TB for these model will come out soon......waiting....

3.5" RMVB Player Review

Long time didn't purchase any gadget.....'coz no extra money........
Last night got a call from my cousin and he said he bought a RMVB HDD player......

Grab my video collection and straight to my cousin's house......

OK ....start testing.....(testing using RCA only....my cousin's tv doesn't have component input...quality is still ok on 29" Sony TV)

1. rmvb files ---> almost everything is working......but under my TVB rmvb collections which has dual-audio...not working

2. mkv files ---> not working (file with mkv extension doesn't show up....renaming the file to avi and rmvb also can't play)

3. avi files --> working (didn't test all my collections...but resolution more than 720x480 can work....those WAF collection which is 800x436 and above can work.....this kind of file doesn't support by my Pioneer divx player). I don't have DTS avi files, but AC3 avi looks ok.....ogm and aac not tested

4. Subtitle support in avi files ---> support .srt extension english and simplified chinese. Doesn't support graphics subtitle (idx/sub).

5. Long file name (directory and files) --> support (the directory or file will auto scrolling to left to show the name)

6. Simplified Chinese file name and directory --> support

So to conclude:
Pros:
1. support rmvb (finally)....but not sure why dual audio rmvb files can't play...hopefully there is a firmware update
2. support avi files resolution more than 720x480
3. support external english and simplified chinese text subtitle for avi playback. (try to put xx.avi, xx.chs.srt and xx.eng.srt but only display one subtitle)
4. casing with built-in fan, support thumb drive/card reader.....didn't try the external usb hardisk.....

Cons:
1. Price --> RM320...little bit expensive....RM250 or below would be nice
2. Remote control --> too small and look fragile.....imagine srolling up and down with a lot of directories ..painful
3. OSD/navigation/user interface ---> so so only...... have fast forward function but doesn't have 'goto' particular minutes and seconds functions
4. Doesn't support graphics subtitle (idx/sub)

Due to little pricey, i think i will skip this one.....waiting for a cheapo rmvb and mkv player....

Verbatim (lastest packaging) = RM98
Mitsubishi = RM96
Imation = RM99 (110 pcs)
Benq = RM88

and much more.......... all below RM1.00/pc for the branded dvdr
no need to buy all the cheapo brand.....just grab the Verbatim and Mitsubishi will do........

I am using Benq, Verbatim, HP, Imation (old batch..I-Crystal) and Mitsubishi currently.....and the overall satisfication (try on Benq, NEC and HP DVD writer)

Mitsubishi > Verbatim (old batch) > Imation(I-Crystal) > HP > Benq > all other cheapo brand

Noted: The newer Benq 100pcs-package quality is mixed....try to avoid (the previous batch is ok)
