Our housing area Amansiara just organised a meeting 2 days ago and now it's been reported in China Press (below)

I am sure LYN is much more efficient , so I am trying my luck in asking for help here.

This will help us alot in gathering/uniting more houseowners via LYN forum to support our cause in battling rogue developers.

How to stop her

I can't believe there are still closed minded people that judge others by how much they make, and using the word useless to describe them. Maybe to these people, the most "useful" guys are those who have good family backgrounds, owned a posh car or two, and wont mind him "having a few" mistresses outside coz he deserved it.

Anyway, I think useless is a pretty heavy word to describe other people, even stranger. THose who simply use such word on other people ,are pretty much screwed up themselves and should be banned from reproducing to avoid them become bad parents that teaches their daughters corrupted mindset.

ps: I never initiate topics in LYN unless its ABSOLUTE NECESSARY. I enjoyed replying. but this time really... hmmmm...... pitiful.

reading 5.25 HD via sata 2 usb cable

I am salvaging the HDD from my old pentium II CPU.

I am using the SATA 2 USB cable (see attached pic) that served me well for 2 yrs ++ until now (on a smaller sized laptop HD). It's understood that smaller HD doesn't require external power source.

In my case now, where can I get the special cable to provide power source for my 5.25 HD, and its price?

LCD monitor dilemma

I'm searching for a decent LCD monitor for my "old" computer which I have not used coz the CRT monitor broken for nearly 2 years. This computer is running on windows 98 with 1024x768 16.7million colors. Preferably 19 inch.

Main consideration is reliability,affordability and direct-workability. No need too many features. and I'm not a gamer. I won't mind working with a 'humble' resolution of 1024 x 768 x 16.7 mil colors (since that's the max my graphic card can support).

Dilema 1: LCD brand

I saw Samsungs being sold in most shops, with one or two Viewsonics. I guess its more reliable since dealers took the risks of ordering more Samsung stocks. But then again Viewsonic price is tempting ($408 for 19" in some shops, Samsung equivalent is $500++).

A friend of mine discourage me from buying Samsung as they're prone to be hit by "not optimum resolution" issue, he suggested HP instead. And I spotted an Acer 19" during sales in Harvey Norman for $400. Reviews are mixed.

Dilema 2: will it work immediately as soon as I plug it in?

Since my machine is windows 98 (service pack 2) with analog input, obviously I wish the LCD monitor to work as soon as I plug it in, otherwise I can't proceed to configure it properly for optimal use.

Experts please give recommendations! thanks.

failed to detect usb hard disk

This usb hard disk is an old fujitsu hd with 40gb storage that i've taken out and use for few years now. Served me well until today.

Before this problem occured, I plugged it in, got it detected as G:\, and copied some files from my laptop over to this HD. Halfway during copying, my laptop freezes and I'm forced to restart it.

So the nightmare began. I am unable to detect this USB hard disk properly anymore.

- I tried cold boot
- I tried different USB port
- no issue with lack of power as it worked well before till now
- I tried inserting it into another shell (from another HD) and plug it in, still undetectable

What's weird is, when its plugged in, the USB icon is shown on taskbar. And the device manager contain entries for it under "Disk Drive" node and USB controllers node (refer to attached pic). But I can't access the drive. THe drive letter failed to show in " My Computer".

Any idea on getting it to work again?

I encountered the error titled above while browsing www.lowyat.net since afternoon (about 3pm++) till now. After this error pops up, the browser displayed an empty white page.

I'm now surfing LYN using firefox. Just curious why it happened suddenly and whether it affect only me or other members as well.

My IE version is 6.00.2900.

regarding LYN hosting

I am impressed by page loading time in LYN, not to mention its stability (seldom goes down ) and is interested to have the (web based) company I am working on to consider fully dedicated hosting by ipserverone. Actually my company is working on a web-based MMOG that requires low (or izzit high, which term that means quick response time!) latency (10-30KB of data be served every few seconds,basically just a periodical AJAX call to update various real-time status of online players etc). What I am hoping for is the capability of the server that might be able handle at least 500 concurrent players at a time. And not to mention the initialization of the game engine that require the server to crank out more than 1MB of data/images back to the browser each time the game is started.

But there's still one issue that bugs me, that is the 1mbps bandwidth offered (which I found out it's just "tiny" for a dedicated hosting). I am just wondering with the high traffic that LYN is facing, what is the average bandwidth per second it consumed during peak hours?

Hopefully the LYN (IT) staff can be kind enough to disclose this.

clearing bank/credit card debt

I'm helping a friend post this up since she's lazy to register as a member here juz to do it. Anyway.. here it goes..

My bro-in-law had credit cards with public bank(credit limit 5k), cimb bank(cl 5k) , maybank(i dunno) and ambank(cl 4k) 10 years ago,
He din pay the bill and it become bad debt.
Recently he decided to pay off his debt and hv done for both cimb bank and public bank as they can offer him to settle it for rm7k each.
But he is having prob with ambank, whereby the personincharge of his file claim that his accumulated debt amount is rm120k ++ after so many years and asking for 19k for full settlement. of coz we refuse and tried to negotiate with him again. then he said 16k ..and we tried to negotiate again, then they go back to 19k again.
wat i dun understand is y other bank like public bank and cimb bank can gip us for 7k to close the file bt ambank cannot? and their attitude were really bad and decision making oso not consistence. Anyone can help? thx

FYI, I've asked her to send a formal letter to AMBANK bank but she hasn't done that yet. She only called them up and was annoyed by how she is treated on the phone.

My personal opinion:

IF I owed up to $120k or more, I'll do a kenduri and party 3 day 3 nites if I found out the banks finally let me off the hook wiv a fraction of that amount. But I guess that's financially "Stupid". As a consumer, I have "my rights" to have my bank debt be cleared by paying just 10% of the real amount, and of course to have the compulsory "good treatment" by the bank. No?

LCD suddenly display sideways

while I was working I accidentally pressed sumthing (maybe a slight rub on the touchpad), then LCD suddenly switch to "portrait" mode. means, the screen displayed EVERYTHING sideways. So the mousepointer adjusted to it.

While scrambling to fix the problem, I have to position my laptop sideways (like an "open book with pages on both left and right sides), then navigate the mouse to shutdown and restart the laptop. So everything is fine now.

but I'm just curious.. what the hell that caused it to happen??

I've owned a few, namely:

- multiscreen mario bros
- multiscreen donkey kong
- parachute

but borrowed n played with about a dozen or so.

those were the days where 8-bit console juz started to flood de market (pre-micro genius anyone?)

the most memorable one is donkey kong. I remembered playing 'em while doing my big business inside the toilet. the battery flap was loose then, and I have to secure them with cellophane tapes. hehe.

and my first time hacking experience is done on a G&W too! when i was about 10. since de battery flap is loose, i take them out, then short curcuit the battery (skilled fingering techniques applied on the battery and the metal contact) . The effects are very laughable indeed!.... made the crocodiles move faster, or the birds fly erratically.. the lcd sprites just gone berserk! and the game runs as usual... hehe...

Tried hacking too on a brickgame I gotten yrs later... with even more funny results.

Anyone still keeping their G&W?

MMS queued in outbox still unable to be sent out

Yes I googled it beforehand and found out its common problem (and not hp specific).still havent find solution to my problem though.

im using a sony ericsson k618i. Have created a MMS profile but I think the message server i set wrong.

anyone can point me in the right direction pls...

and btw dun suggest me going into SE support website and perform the MMS setting, coz I can't find my hp model (k618i) inside their list to even get started!

aztech DSL 600EW config page bug?

this is getting crazy. I've enabled the id/password for this modem/router and now it keeps prompting me for the id/password every single damn time i click on each feature/link/button/whatever clickable stuff on their config page.

and then even after i managed to login after successfuly provided the correct id/pw), it doesn't point me directly to the feature/page I intend to go (keeps redirecting me to the main page)

now i am unable to get to the page to disable this id/pw authentication altogether.

this is nuts! help!!

wireless network cant be detected

configured it nicely to connect to streamyx and it works via network cable connected to my laptop.

tried unplugging the network cable to try wifi but it doesn't detect this wireless network.

so I return back to plugging the network cable in and continue surfing. here are the status of the router:

in the router configuration page I seen some peculiar notes below :

1. Your system's wireless network adapter must have the same SSID as the wireless router to access the network wirelessly
2. You can also make your Wireless Network Name/ SSID invisible to other wireless users by hiding your SSID.
3. Specify the wireless channel for your network. All wireless clients must use the same channel to access to the router.

I am curious whether no. 3 is the cause that this wireless n/work cant be detected by my laptop. And how to know what "channel" my laptop wifi is using ?

Problem details

First occurence of problem: today
Problem frequency: always
Problem description:

lightning detector automatically shutdowns power while laptop is running (without battery). on restart (20 min later)...

- cable still connected from modem to NIC but has "n/work cable unplugged" error
- LED doesn't light up in LAN status on the modem
- DSL status OK

tried below with no avail:

1) restart modem
2) shutdown laptop and restart 20 min later (suggested fix from other forum)
3) change the cable

laptops with the most durable shell

I owned a 3 year old twinhead and had been visiting their service centre for a few times the past week.

I'm really suprised, seeing some of the client's there are having almost the same problem with their twinhead's, that is... cracked lid and faulty hinges (the part connecting the LCD panel to the rest of the laptop body.

Actually last year, i've had my laptop lid partially splitted due to one of the hinge locked together (cannot be folded in). From the look of it, it may need just the screws n hinge replaced, as the lid not yet reach "cracked" condition. Somehow, they insist on having the whole lid changed at the cost of $400. (just the lid, no electronic parts involved!)

I guess I won't be considering twinhead in the near future. So any of u are having such problem with your laptops (any brand).

I Juz would like to gather some info on the brand of laptop I'll plan to get in the future ^O^.

A ruler from a faraway kingdom once lamented to his personal assistant, saying he was duped a few millions $ few days ago. Then he proceed to show the name card given by the person who cheated him.
