Possibly Faulty PSU

Hi there

Last Saturday I bought a bunch of items from Cycom.

Core i7 920
ASUS P6T
3x2GB Corsair Dominator RAM
ASUS EAH5850
Corsair HX750

Everything installed and ran fine, but when I stress the system the computer will just shut off. This can happen when I'm playing CoD: MW2. I've also ran 3D Benchmarks for stress testing, and it will always shut off after a few minutes.

Two possibly faulty components are the PSU or the Graphic Card. I'm not sure which is the faulty component. Can I bring the parts back to cycom this weekend, and we do a test there and then to find out? I do not have access to extra equipment to help isolate the problem. I would like to avoid making many trips down to lowyat to change stuff.

For the record, I've tried plugging the PSU to main power socket and also to a UPS, doesn't make a difference.

Please reply/PM how we can resolve this issue.

Hey guys

This isn't exactly a job offer, which is why I'm posting here and not in the Jobs forum. I'm looking for people who will join in as part of the team, you'll get paid for it, but I can't afford to pay you much, so its unlikely that you can take this as a full time job.

This project is to build an Asia Pacific Joint Registry for orthopaedic surgeons. I'll give a very brief description of what is required of the application.

Client

Portable, installed in thumbdrive and doesn't require anything to be installed on the pc
Portable application must be encrypted and password protected
Application connects to server to send anonymous medical data
Application connects to server and requests medical data for comparison purposes
Modular Forms (allow new forms to be developed and plugged in to the application)

Server

Store data anonymously but still able to identify patients so that data doesn't get duplicated
Scalable to include new data forms
Able to handle data coming in from various universities/hospitals

Funding for this project will likely come from MDEC's pre-seed fund. That would give each team member an allowance of RM1,500 a month. I'm also looking for alternative funding for this project, so in terms of monthly pay, assume an MDEC allowance first and see if you can work for that amount.

Whether you want to do this part-time/full-time is fine by me, as long as the project can be finished. I'm looking at timeline of 9 months from funding approval.

Navigation Menu designs

For those of you who've developed/designed your own CMS, how do you handle your site's navigation? Add links to the menu, creating navigations from different modules etc. I've got my own version running, but the design/code is rather messy at the moment and I think it can be better. I want to bounce ideas off the community here and see what we can come up with.

I'll explain the goal/design/requirements of the navigation system.

Requirements:

Easily display/control menus in code (e.g. Navigation::display($menu_name); )
Modular, allows links of different types to be pulled and updated automatically. For example, if I add a "Products" type link to the menu, the product links and its sub links will be pulled from the products table. I can also choose which level I want to start with, like I can say I want the link to show products from the "T-shirt category" instead of listing all the categories.
Data & View separation, same menu should be able to be displayed in different formats/styles
Unlimited levels of hierarchy
Ability to limit hierarchy levels
Minimal SQL queries (avoid recursive queries)

What I've done
The table design:

menu( menu_id, name, depth );
menu_link( link_id, menu_id, type, ref_id, ref_key, name, location, parent, parent_type, parent_list, sequence)

type stores the type of link that's in the menu. Typically the class name of the module.
ref_id is the module's corresponding ID. (e.g. product_id, news_id, article_id, etc.)
ref_key is any key used by the module, this is optional, but I use it for better SEO and makes it easy to identify links when coding.
location is only typically used by what I call "external links".
parent is the link_id of parent link
parent_type is the link type of parent
parent_list is a full list of parent link_ids (helps determine location in hierarchy)
sequence is the order of the links

Right now, whenever I load a menu, I store it statically in an array like this

When I want to set one of the links as active, I just loop through the menus and find the node with the right type/LYN combination.
When I want to display the menu, I read it from the static list, parse it and create a tree.

Problems

When parsing the list to create a tree, I can't reference the static objects because it will affect the static list. If I don't create a reference, any changes to the status of the link in the list may not be passed on to where the menu is being displayed.
Tree parsing, what would the fastest and most reliable way to do it? Right now what I do is I loop the list once to first get the highest level of hierarchy, then look the same number of times as the level hierarchy. 1st creating the top level, then the sub level, then the sub-sub level. Is there a better way to do this?
Using a list of parents to determine depth has create a big of a problem for me. If I start a link from the 2nd hierarchy level, what is supposed to be "0" is now "2". The calculation is then messed up.

All in all, the design and code works... just not very elegantly.

Phone Jack keeps getting burnt

Hey guys

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, so move if it the proper place if one exists

The phone jack I use for my streamyx keeps burning up. I've changed the wall socket TWICE, and I've already used up 3-4 wires. It starts of brand new with nice shiny gold connectors, and within a few days it turns black. The line is still usable, but it can get VERY unstable. Its getting very annoying.

Anyone have any idea what may be causing this? I'm going to call an electrician to take a look, but I would like to be given some information prior, so at least I have an idea of the problem.

There are many topics here of guys whining about being rejected(no matter the reason) and then there are topics where people attempt to teach a guy how to be attractive to women. Despite how these 2 types seem different, they both share a fundamental problem. What is that problem? well let me share it with you...

Lets start with the problem aye? I mentioned that those 2 types of topic share the same problem of lacking standards. A person who whines about being rejected is giving the power of his self-worth to another person. In effect, this means he has no self-worth because he isn't evaluating himself, someone else is doing it for him. This is also true with articles/topics on attraction. It is all assuming what the other party wants and adapting to it. Once again, putting the power of evaluation onto an external source. Where the hell are your standards?

Peer pressure is often the reason why guys chase certain girls. Whether its because all your friends have one, or maybe its just to show off how "macho/cool/awesome" you are by having a hot chick by your side. Is it really necessary though? Would that really make you happy? So ask yourselves, what do you really want in a partner, heck... what do you really want in LIFE? Will the woman you want fit in the life you want to lead? Set your standards, know what you want, know what you need and you will have a direction.

Humans are not the borg, everyone is different. Each and every girl has their own tastes, standards, personality, quirks, etc. Its impossible to be a man who can please them all. Since you can't please everyone, why don't you find the girls who matter? The girls you really want? Now that you've set a standard, its time for you to qualify the people you meet and see if they meet your standard.

Say for example, you're a handsome guy, but happy with a "not so attractive" girl who loves you dearly and meets what you look for in a partner. Others may say "omg, you can do so much better" or "Dude, why are you settling for less?". None of that matters, you've found someone who meets your criteria and you're happy. THAT is what is important.

Now if you truly want the best, like a woman who's beautiful, intelligent, funny, loving, loyal, rich, kinky, etc. then be prepared for a hard journey. As much as you have standards, they will to. So you will have to improve yourself to meet their standards but not at the cost of your own standards. Chase what you want as much as you like, but what you want, must also have what you need. Remember, wants are optional, needs are a requirement.

So basically be who you want to be, don't bother with what people think of you. Do what makes you happy and you'll attract those who will suit your lifestyle. In the end, its your happiness that matters, not trying to prove yourself to be better than others. You must have a life of your own, and your partner is someone you share that life with.

Getting list of parent's children

Ok, I'm wondering if this can be done in a single query. Lets assume I can't use stored procedures for this.

Lets say I have a table like this

I can do this easily by using recursion and PHP, but it'll result in way too many queries. Wondering if there is a way to do this in single query. Remember, assume that stored procedures is not available.

I'm trying to figure out how to solve this problem nicely. Say you have an area where you allow users to type in HTML to be displayed. How do you properly parse the input so that you retain the HTML tags and convert the appropriate special characters in a way that doesn't break the HTML. Take my test string for example:

I want to be able to turn it into this

My idea is basically

Create a pattern that finds the html opening/closing tags (those tags shouldn't have specialcharacters unless in the attribute values)
Negate that pattern (should give me all the other tags
Apply substitution rules to the matches

Unfortunately I'm a n00b in regex. Any pattern I try to use to remove the match the non-html elements, I end up removing the > and < characters as well. Anyone with more regex experience want to help? I think this is a rather challenging regex problem (especially if you take the html attributes into consideration).
