Ferrari P4/5 Competizione version in the works?

Remember Jim Glickenhaus' Ferrari P4/5? Unveiled at Pebble Beach back in 2006, the re-bodied Enzo was designed by Pininfarina to mimic the classic lines of the legendary 1967 Ferrari P4 racecar. With just a single example built, the P4/5 is truly a one-off design. Or so we thought. According to Glickenhaus' statements on the FerrariChat.com forum, he is undergoing preparations to construct a race version that would make its competition debut at the 2010 Nürburgring 24 hour race from May 13-16. Currently the plan is merely just that - a plan - and Glickenhaus admits that much has to be done before his vision becomes a reality. "There are a LOT of stars that would have to align for this to happen but it's not impossible," he stated.

The P4/5 Competizione, as it is being called, would be based on an entirely new car and would not be a conversion of the P4/5 road car. Glickenhaus hasn't given specifics about exactly which car would be used as the platform, but he did hint that it will "have a Ferrari chassis/vin#/engine and gearbox." The renderings you see here are merely Photoshopped versions of the road car, but an updated sketch and additional specifications should be coming in the next few weeks.

According to Glickenhaus, the leading factor preventing the proposal from coming to fruition is finding a major sponsor. Our guess is that time might become an issue as well, as eight months is a relatively short time to develop, build, and test a competitive racecar. Still, we wish Glickenhaus the best of luck, and hope to see another one of his dream cars on track in the near future.

----

I always admire old Ferrari like P3,Coda Lunga 512S,& GTO.....Glickenhaus & Pininfarina did a good job f recreating the legendary tribute in modern way.....even got N.A.R.T!(North American Racing Team) logo!

So when we gonna see Scuderia Fillipetni & the other from 60's & 70's...

---The creator of the photoshopped version of the car was van den Brick, the one that recreated the modern GTO concept on Photoshop & did impressed the Ferrari manager & Pininfarina...so lucky to be that guy....

BMW finally unveil the S1000 RR

One of the oldest motorcycle marque in the world was BMW Motorrad. This time, the brand that full of history with innovations both in car & motorcycle, this time they back for World Superbike title. To do this, finally the special homoglation, limited run Supersport 1000cc sportbike from BMW,named S1000 RR will hit the 09' season as possible &
just like HP2 sport, the superbike segment of BMW now expanded greatly & hope to win the crown among big-4 lover.....

The HP2 was boxer twin engine, this time the S1000 RR was powered by inline-4 engine,998cc high revving motor that produce 200hp & dry weight of 183kg(190kg full load)

The bike will only be made of 1000 unit to satisfy the rules of 2009 WSBK by FIM.

From Motorcycle USA:

BMW S1000RR first look

Compact Inline-4 motor with looks to match,& lotsa exotic material from Ohlin suspension, traction control by MoTec,Aluminium swingarm & Brembo are some of the delicious thing to be delivered on the road version.

Staff and fans of BMW Motorrad are looking forward to March 1, 2009 with great excitement. At the introductory race to the Superbike World Championship in Phillip Island, Australia, two BMW motorcycles will be in the starting line-up for the first time. After recent tests in Portimao and Valencia, riders Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus are optimistic about the future and the mood in the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team is positive. The racing bikes will be fairly close to serial production models, allowing for the greater audience identification characteristic of the sport. Behind the scenes meanwhile, production of the serial machine is getting underway: the BMW S 1000 RR.

The package of this completely newly developed motorcycle with its 999cc in-line 4-cylinder engine is very compact and light. The dry weight of the motorcycle is 183 kg.

Both its supreme performance figures and its outstanding riding properties make the BMW S 1000 RR an extremely attractive offer in the supersports segment.

This shot gives a close look at the chassis and frame of BMWs superbike.

The engine has a very compact cylinder head and is narrow in shape. The valves are activated by means of very small, light cam followers, virtually at Formula 1 level in terms of their dimensions. This construction ensures very high engine speeds and allows maximum freedom in engine design in terms of torque and output.

For the supersports bike BMW S 1000 RR, a completely newly developed sports ABS featuring four different modes as well as the dynamic traction control system DTC will be available. The functional principle of the traction control system has been borrowed directly from racing.
2009 BMW S 1000 RR.

The distinctive design of the S 1000 RR reflects the general style of the segment but also clearly represents the brand BMW. The new S 1000 RR will be available in the four finishes Mineral Silver metallic, Acid Green metallic, Thunder Grey metallic and - based on the BMW Motorrad racing colours - Alpine White/Lupine Blue/Magma Red.

The serial production machine BMW S 1000 RR will be presented to the public in the early summer of 2009 but can already be ordered in dealerships.

Bikes are ready to roll out to dealerships in the next few months.

Hope Auto Bavaria bring this to their showroom.....have seen the HP2 sports & it look great!

New record for modified turbo streetbike

Quite old already...but just to let you know....

Top 10 Flyers(Official Results for Elvington Wheelie & Top Speed Event 9-11th July 2006)

Frank (Flying Dutchman) Gillebaard 265.4(424.64km/h)
Jack Frost 257.3
Andy Head 240.8
Shaun Mills 233.6
Richard Albans 213.1
Mick Templeman 212.2
Tony Foster 211.8
Will Williams 206.6
Clive Seddon 203.5
Gerard Tinsdale 195.2

Average Two-Way Flyers

Frank Gillebaar 247.30
Jack Frost 242.65
Andy Head 214.6
Will Williams 204.85
Clive Seddon 189.7
Patrick (Ghostrider) 186
Eifion Williams 175.6
Tony Foster 171.2
Kenn Dunn 170.85
Alan Tinnion 169.9
Emma Brigginshaw 151.6

Top Ten Wheelie Entrant Flyers

Patrick (Ghostrider) - Flying Wheelie 215.20
Nick McMahon 203.9
Matt Pomeroy 202.4
Bob Collins 187.4
Dave Smith 187.4
Paul O'Brian 185.2
Marc Ratcliffe 184.3
James Woodhams 183.7
Dave Fowle 183
Phil Cullen 182.1

Frank 'The Flying Dutchman' Gillebaard has set a new top speed world record for modified streetbikes. During the event in the UK, in Elvington (on a disused airport…) Gillebaard hits speeds of 424.64km/h on his turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa. Reports say that he did this on street tyres, though we wonder which street tyres are capable of speeds in excess of 400km/h!

In second place was Jack Frost, who ran his turbo ’Busa at 411.68km/h, and in third was Andy Head, who hit 385.28km/h on his turbo Kawasaki ZX-12R. It just gets Faster and Faster…

----The rider is surely got to be one of most craziest riders ever(even more than pro drag bike racing)to topped out the speed like this, just like Group C Le mans
racecars....

----the record is still stand,so for those that realy got titanium ball, can try to break his record....even the fastest Ghostrider also cant match his speed....

----there is no way a highly modified street sportscars, either japanese or continental can achieve this kind of speed with relatively "small" displacement,& without any "big" modification like this bike did.....

power-to-weight ratio rulezz!!!but only in the hand of man with brass ball....

If there was a great era for any automotive greatest heyday,it would be the 80's.....All of the thing is worked like never before, regardless if it was single seater,Sportscar
racing,Powerboat,& 2-wheeler.
The 80's also known to many as "Saturday Night Light","Miami Vice","The innovation" & for automotives fans, the thing like Motronic,Kugelfish,EFI,PGM-FI,Hydropeneumatic suspension,& of course turbo is something that really empowering the industries & seems to be the starting point for more efficient, cleaner emission car, that also lead to what known to the speculators as "Supercar Boom".

Most talked, reviewed,& much hyped during the 80's was this two car:Porsche 959 & Ferrari F40,which is revered as part of the 80's supercars glamourous day.

Supercars Boom

"Supercars Boom" is one of the reasons that speculators at that times really see & one of the reason of economic downfall in early 1990's.This due to the fact, that many people rather spending a large sums of money as they think the supercars is more to investment rather than "playboy look".The manufacturers, from Italian exotic like Ferrari, & Lamborghini poured a million of $$,just to became a part of international, elites society that want to have a fast, yet sexy looking car, that will fetch them about a million for trade-off.

Ferrari 288 GTO(Homoglation Special supercar)which is turned up,with it much modified successor,the F40.

Golden Era Of Sportscars Racing

Due to the fierce manufacturers championships during the 80's in FIA,SCCA,IMSA,ACO sportscars racing with world championships round, some of biggest car manufacturers begin to make a special road going version of they race car in order to homoglated it to world racing. Some of the example are,Porsche 959,Ferrari 288 GTO,Lancia 037,Lancia Delta,&

Delta 037 & S4 by Lancia in road going trim, specially made to pass the FIA homoglation of Group B world rally Championships.

While the tobacco & wain ruled the sponsorship & advertisements spot during the 80's,especially in Formula One,World Sportscar Championships,& FIA World Rally Championships, but no one can denied how much impact their made during the series was held.
Not only it fielded most of billboard around the track & the car,but it also important how they sponsorship & financial helps is worth every time the car is passing toward spectators & win the races.

Marlboro,Silk Cut,John Player Special & Rothmans International perhaps is among the most successful tobbacco in sports advertisement ever, garnering many victories under their sponsorships especially Rothmans sponsored work teams like Porsche,Honda(HRC)& Williams F1.

Ferrari Concept bike

Some of rarest, exotic bikes from all over the world....

1986' Lamborghini Design 90-"Lambo Bike" or Lamborghini Motorbike.

An extremely rare Lamborghini Motorbike designed in collaboration between Lamborghini and the French leading-edge racing bike constructor Boxer-Bike.

Boxer Bike has been famous since the seventies for their racing and sophisticated motorbikes, hand-built with extensive use of aerospace-technology, ultra lightweight frames and offering the highest performance on two wheels. In 1986, when Lamborghini decided that a motorbike would bear their name, Boxer was chosen as the only partner capable of building the most desirable motorbike of the period : the Lamborghini Design 90, powered by a state-of-the-art, 4-cam, 4 valve per cylinder straight-4 engine.

The price asked when this machine was presented was twice as high as the one of a famous high-end motorbike of the period. This price factor, in addition to the availability in extremely limited series contributed to establish the myth of the Lamborghini bike. As specialists know, the Chief Engineer for this bike was Claude Fior, famous for his unique high-tech racing bikes, and that unfortunately died too young a few years ago.

With over 120 HP, less than 180 kg, a radical and voluptuous style, this bike was only a dream for millions of Lamborghini and motorbike enthusiasts.
The complete fiberglass dramatically aerodynamic bodywork, sharing the same inspiration as the world-famous "25th Anniversary" Countach. The removable rear seat cover allow taking a passenger for an occasional ride... All in all, including partly "Lamborghinised" Boxer versions, around twenty Lamborghini-Boxer motorcycles were built.

1994' Honda NR750-Honda "New Racing"(NR)750

The NR750 was Honda's opportunity to show what they can do, but its beautiful engineering was lost on the public. The engine technology, the complex exhaust routing, and touches like carbon fibre composite bodywork and a titanium-tinted screen were not what most observers thought of as the way forward. It was quite heavy, and definitely not intended as a race machine. And of course the ludicrous price (£38,000 in the UK, ¥5,000,000 in Japan) was enough to ensure it remained a curiousity.

Some features, such as the side-mounted radiators and aspects of the styling eventually into Honda's more modest road models, but the enormous expense of developing an oval-pistoned v-four motorcycle means such a design is unlikely to be sold at realistic prices. The conventional v-four engine is already complex and expensive to produce.

The PGM-FI fuel injection was state of the art in 1992, and used 7 sensors and a 16-bit CPU to control the eight injectors as well as controlling ignition timing. In addition it altered the position of an inlect duct in the airbox to regulate airflow. Over 200 were assembled, at a rate of 2 or 3 a day.

Since it couldn't be homologated for World Championship racing Honda decided the NR750 could be used to attempt some records. A lightened, tuned NR, making 150bhp @ 15,500rpm and weighinhg just 180kg was produced (compared to the standard bikes' 222kg). Diminutive GP rider Loris Capirossi set new flying mile, flying kilometre and standing start mile & 10km records, assuring its place in the record books.

Honda had tried the oval-piston concept before. The first motorcycle named NR750 was an endurance racer which appeared at Le Mans in 1987. It failed to finish, but was very fast with a wide powerband. It weighed just 145kg and made over 150bhp - in the days when superbikes were doing well to put out 135 horses.

Honda NR750's hallmark was this,a small, rev happy to the ceiling Oval/Oblong V4 engine, that was a short form of V8,really ahead at that time & was rare even by today standard.

To achieve this aim Honda could have looked to follow their 1960's practice of increasing the number of cylinders to produce more power. However, Grand Prix rules at the time required a configuration with maximum of four combustion chambers. Honda engineers therefore came up with the highly innovative solution of constructing a 'V8' engine in the form of a four cylinder. This was achieved by designing an oval piston that allowed a total of 8 valves per cylinder, and connecting two con-rods to each piston. Such a configuration led to almost unprecedented complexity in terms of engine design, with 32 valves and eight con-rods incorporated into the dimensions of a regular four cylinder motorcycle engine.

The bike became the most expensive production bike at the time when it was selling for $50,000 and with the rarity, they nowadays rarely change hands.

Considerable computer CAD/CAM work led to a full-scale buck. Then, a driving prototype, which was scrutinized by various focus groups, and a final new design, which incorporated a different rear body treatment from the focus group's feedback, finally yielded the first and second production prototypes ("Factory Five's GTM," November '06 KC).

Almost a year has passed since we first featured the LS1- and LS7-powered GTMs. We're told that since its debut over 100 kits have been sold, many of which are probably well under construction in replicar hobbyists' garages across the land. For those projects that have hit a standstill due to a lack of time or whatever, we hope this test article will serve to stoke the fires. Wouldn't it be great to see many more of these FFR GTMs on the streets of America? We think so. When you get the lowdown on how economically these Supercars can be constructed, and how well they perform, FFR's phone lines and Web site may see a huge increase in GTM inquiries. We look forward to seeing the finished vehicles on the road and at upcoming events. Who knows-KIT CAR may decide to photograph and feature your sleek GTM Supercar. Build it as well as this one is constructed, and we might honor your efforts here someday. KC

& the honor goes to.....

At the largest automotive aftermarket show in the world, SEMA, Gary's GTM was awarded the Best Domestic trophy from Sony Playstation. Each year, five SEMA vehicles receive Sony Gran Turismo awards. The grand prizewinner will get featured in the next version of Gran Turismo, the driving/racing simulator game. Gary's wife, Tatiana Cheney, from Moldovia, which is next to Russia, graciously agreed to be the Supermodel next to their Supercar. The car's almost as photogenic as she is! :salute:

Billet aluminum 5 logos mount the rear wing. Within the billet fascia that surrounds the "200MPH" license plate, the back-up camera is installed. By the way, the license plate probably reads low.

The owner filled the dash with an Aim digital gauge cluster. Whenever Gary goes into reverse, the TV screen in the center console activates and reveals the view to the rear, made possible by a back-up camera installed in the rear valance. A Polk Audio sound system offers stereo sound, just in case you don't wish to hear the LS6 mill work its magic.

SEMA review on Gary beautifully executed GTM F5:

Of the eight Factory Five Racing cars that Gary has built over the years, this is his first GTM. A home contractor by profession in New England, his most exemplary FFR construction project to date is this GTM. That's saying something, since he has built two street roadsters (one of which was the commemorative 100th FFR kit in '96), two Type 65 Daytona Coupes, and three spec racers. Gary performs 80 to 85 percent of the construction of his FFR creations himself, but he farms out the finish bodywork and paint to World Class Collision, as well as any custom upholstery to Turner Upholstery, two local automotive artisans in the New England area. In terms of custom fabrication, Steve Knowlton, owner of Knowlton Racing Enterprises, helps Gary with some of the meticulous custom fabrication work that his FFR cars always seem to include. Mr. Knowlton actually matriculated through a private fabricating class with another custom fabricator you may be familiar with, Jesse James. Steve is adept at doing any sort of mechanical work, as well as the fancy, high-end custom fabricating Gary likes to show off in his FFR cars.
ORIGINAL KIT PRICES/PART DONOR/& EST.BUDGET FOR COMPLETION

Factory Five Racing
Phone: (508) 291 3443
Web Site: www.factoryfive.com

Vehicle
Year and type/model: 2006 FFR GTM Supercar

Pricing
Price of Kit: $19,990
Total Price as Tested: $58,162
Manufacturer Estimate of Hours to Build/Complete
Vehicle: 250

Donor
Year and type/model: (Chevy Corvette, 1998;2005 LS7 engine)

Chassis
Frame: Yes-FFR tubular steel space frame
Wheelbase: 102 in.
Rearend: No (Porsche GT3)
Rear Suspension: No(Corvette donor)
Front Suspension: No (Corvette donor)
Shocks: Yes-Koni aluminum shocks, steel springs
Rear Brakes: No (Corvette donor)
Front Brakes: No (Corvette donor)
Brake Lines: Yes
Master Cylinder: Yes-Wilwood
Brake Booster: No
Steering: Yes
Front Wheel Make & Size: No (Corvette Z06, 18x9)
Rear Wheel Make & Size: No(Corvette Z06, 18x12)
Front Tire Make & Size: No(Toyo RA1 245/35 R18)
Rear Tire Make & Size: No(Toyo RA1 245/35 R18)

Body
Paint Included: No
Paint Brand/Type: Yes-PPG (Polyurethane, Candy Apple Red, House of Kolor)
Windshield/Glass: Yes-DOT
Top: N/A
Roll Bar: N/A (chassis component)
Bumpers: N/A
Grille: N/A
Lights: Yes-DOT legal (Hella)
Mirrors: No (Corvette donor)
Emblems and Trim: Yes-FFR
Fuel System: No (Corvette donor)
Fuel Tank: No (Corvette donor)

Interior
Gauges: Yes-Auto Meter
Wiring: Yes-Painless Performance Products
Steering Wheel: Yes
Seating: Yes-Custom
Upholstery: Yes-FFR custom
Material: Yes-aluminum shell, fabric covering seats, wool carpet

Drivetrain
Engine Brand: Chevrolet
Engine Type: 427ci LS7
Water Pump: No (Corvette donor)
Radiator: No (Corvette donor)
Air Cleaner: Yes-K&N
Ignition: No (Corvette donor)
Headers: No (Corvette donor)
Exhaust System: Yes-FFR custom
Transmission Type: No (Porsche GT3)
Driveshaft: No (Corvette donor)
Shifter: Yes
Air Conditioning: Yes-Vintage Air, custom
Battery: No (Corvette donor)
Engines Brackets: Yes-FFR custom
Accessories: No

Performance
Acceleration
0-60 mph: 4.08 seconds

Braking
Minimum stopping distance
From 60 mph: 98.67 feet

Handling
Lateral acceleration: 1.00 g on race tires
Balance: Neutral
Slalom Speed (420-foot slalom): 47.6 mph on race tires

I wish I had enough times for myself to do this in my house backyard....(lovely american dream....)

If the importing the kit & time was not a problems.......I will take this as my consideration of having this kit(apart from taking Ferrari 330P/3 or Porsche 917 Kurzhekz replica)

Review from Car & Driver magazines reveal how much this supercar has value for $$ & speed if you are the one that have favor of building/modifying your car to the max!

GTM Supercar

The GTM is a V-8 powered, mid-engined car with a composite body shell and an aluminum and steel tube frame chassis. The car uses a GM Performance engine and suspension parts with four-corner coil-over shocks, large brakes and a Porsche 911 Transaxle and is foremost a high performance car. The GTM is light and aerodynamic, with excellent weight distribution and precise race-car handling/braking derived from the Chevrolet Corvette C-5. In the September 2007 issue, Car and Driver reviewed a prototype GTM LS7 and their testing achieved 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds at 134 mph, beating their tested speeds for the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, Porsche Carrera GT, Lamborghini Murcielago, Ferrari Enzo and other higher priced production vehicles. The testing shows the GTM is designed to compete with the fastest accelerating cars in the world.

The car is engineered to be built as a chassis kit by a person at home. Items like A/C, power windows, and complete interior make the vehicle suitable for general use.

BTW,the frame....

A six-point rollcage and a tubular chassis protect the driver while providing support for the rest of the GTM's working parts (a skin-over-chassis concept FFR uses with the four other vehicles it offers). The rollers are 18 x 10-inch, wrapped in 245/40 and 295/35ZR18 rubber. Most of the drivetrain is derived from the Corvette C5, while the transbox is a Porsche G50 unit capable of handling the 500hp motor.

Ohhh...why here at Msia always want to backing up the proton & perodua until the hobby like this is consider forbidden for street legal....

...........This nice replica kit will cost you less than the real thing,& no more $$ will be dump for cost-you-a-bomb Ferrari mechanics, still have the same raw power....without so much hassle as the spare-parts is easy to get & alot cheaper than the pranching horse itself....!!

KIWI POWER F40-GT REPLICA KIT

To re-create Italian styling for this sports-race-street car, the Auckland native mocked up a shell, delicately balanced on boxes and drums, and then re-engineered new plugs to get the shut lines perfect. The chassis started as a bunch of tubes on a workshop floor but finished as a custom steel-tube space frame with steel floors and firewalls to meet New Zealand specs.

Cox has blazed down the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds, with a top speed of 131 mph, and according to the builder, "This is a fantastic supercar. It can go faster than a McLaren F1 and handles superbly. I pull 1.77 g's in the corners and 1.5 g's under brakes and can go from 0-100 mph in 6.5 seconds. I love this car and I want to share it with America."

Nice of him to share, awesome to see, and delicious to drive. Kiwi power, with Italian styling and a Japanese engine...nice combo...

Fiat taillights are a nice touch. Aided by an Air Research turbocharger with a 20-pound boost and Porsche X8 injector, this 2,200-pound kit racer can exceed 200 mph.
The car is fully race prepared, has an 8,000-rpm limit, and pops out 675 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm. For safety, Cox added Kings springs, AP racing brakes, and a Wilwood pedal assembly.

The bodywork was inspirated by 1994 F40 GT(LM),which was look clean nice!
Inside, a custom F40 Developments carbon fiber dash, Motec ADL gauges, MOMO steering wheel, and F40D custom carbon seats and upholstery offer the same classy appearance.

I wish I had enough times for myself to have the kit & assemble it at my own backyard.....

1990 Maserati Barchetta

Dunno if it was repost or not.....
But let just continue shall we.....

This mouth watering design was designed by Shyntesis Design,an Auto-styling based on Italy that combined the spirit of Maserati 350 & 450S,& wrapped the Maserati famous Biturbo powerplant, that is 1996cc AM501(red intake manifold for the Corsa) an evolution of the AM490 (black intake manifold used for the Stradale), a central frame holding an integral fuel tank and a very light glass fiber/carbon fiber spyder body, accelerating the car to about 180 mph (290 km/h). The development of a road version was stopped at a late stage. Today some racing cars hold a road title in Europe, after minor modifications to allow road compatibility.

For racing, a huge adjustable rear spoiler and roll-over hoop were fitted. Inside, the cockpit was kitted out exactly like you would expect, no luxury trim, sound insulation or carpet. Recaro seats with distinctive tartan tops and centres were installed, each being trimmed in fire-proof cloth and equipped with Sabelt harnesses. A suede-rimmed three-spoke Momo steering wheel fronted a lightweight instrument binnacle that did without a speedometer. Weighing in at just 775kg, the Barchetta Corsa was an explosive performer and probably the fastest one-make racer of its time. A top speed approaching 190mph was originally quoted but something around the low 170's was probably more accurate, 0-60 requiring just 4.4 seconds. The Barchetta was launched on December 14th 1991 and for the forthcoming season, a six round championship known as the Grantrofeo Monomarca Barchetta Maserati was organised. All six events were held on Italian soil and despite fairly small grids, these little cars provided entertaining and reliable racing. In 1993, a ten-race championship was run with eight rounds in Italy and two in Holland. 15 Barchetta's were sold, mostly to Maserati dealers who enlisted guest drivers although some also went to privateers. A Stradale version was completed in 1992,but with disappointing sales figures for the Corsa, Maserati decided not to organise a championship for 1994.

It also got a facelifted version which is revamped front bumper & eccentric, yet stylish long plated front headlight(Both for Corsa & Stradale version)

1987 Oldsmobile Aerotech

The Oldsmobile Aerotechs were a series of experimental high-speed vehicles created between 1987 and 1992 incorporating the latest in performance technology with the intention of breaking multiple automobile speed records. The first such car was driven by four-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt to a world closed-course speed record of 257.123mph (413.788 km/h) on 27 August 1987 at the 7.712-mile (12.411 km) test track near Fort Stockton Texas. Prior to this, on 26 August 1987, the car had posted a top speed over a mile of 267.88 mph (431.10 km/h). The car consisted of a March Indycar single seat chassis enclosed in an extremely efficient aerodynamic body shell. It was powered by a highly turbo-charged version of the 2-litre Oldsmobile Quad 4 engine. The Aerotech body was designed by GM Design staff and was one of the sleekest vehicles ever developed for use on a high speed track. The design of the Aerotech included the capability of adjusting underbody sections to control the distribution of downforce, front to rear. Oldsmobile produced three versions of the original Aerotech to prove the capabilities of the company's Quad4 engine. Two were short-tailed (ST) versions and one was long-tailed (LT).

Subsequently, between 6 - 14 December 1992, another version of the Aerotech, this time powered by a 4.0 litre Oldsmobile Aurora V8 engine and fitted with lights, broke 47 speed endurance records including the 10000 and 25000 kilometre world speed records. Other national and international speed records ranging from 10 kilometres to 24 hours were accomplished by a team of drivers working 24 hours a day for 8 days. These records were also set at the Fort Stockton test track.

The one in the picture was 4 lt. engine.....it has another version that was fitted with 2 lt. twin turbo, inline 4 layout.
It might be the old news, but what make this car marvelous is using the engine of the passenger car topped out with lightest & aerodynamics efficient bodywork,it can have a top speed way better than most big bore supercars, that always rather going "big" than going "lightweight" to have astonishing speed breaking machine.

BTW,it also have intended to be a production supercar that emphasis the concept of lotus, small engine with extraordinary chassis, nimble & not too costly to effort.
But it also uknown wheter their(Oldsmobile & GM)will ever look back at this project.....

P/S:Sorry if this was a repost....

Dunno if it was post before or not....but:

Andrea Pininfarina, head of a world-famous Italian car design group, has been killed in a road accident.

Mr Pininfarina was riding a scooter which was hit by a car on the outskirts of Turin early on Thursday. He was 51.

How Ironic.... killed by the things he helped design. You wouldn't want to be the driver would you....

RIP A.P...hope the Pininfarina going strong with fresh new design as ever.....

As we all know,Formula One(F1) are the pinaccle of Motorsport top level competitions. The single-seater,with rev to ceiling engine, heavily aerodynamics efficient. They are truly heroic & gentleman drivers lining up in the sake to driving it on the track. The unforgiving stiffer suspension,ultra-cramped cockpit, combine with extreme agility & speed that make the driver's taking 2-6G in every turn, proved how much stamina is needed to drive this type of car.

In 1970,was the year that we saw such motor racing greats as Niki Lauda and Gilles Villeneuve enter Formula 1 and also saw innovations in design including six-wheel cars, ground effect aerodynamics and as the decade ended, turbocharging.

After the great turbocharging & ground effect was over in 80',the old F1 car are still dominated by Tour De Force, proven such the great era of technology will never been repeated by history.....

So,this is my top ten list for the greatest F1 ever:

10)Ferrari 312T

In the early 1970's, Ferrari proved uncompetitive against the Ford DFV powered British Lotus Type 72's and they decided to revamp their flat-12 312B design into the 312T. The "T" stood for the transverse installation of the gearbox, which gave the car better balance and made it more compact overall. The flat-12 engine was designed in the early 1970's to allow smoother airflow over the car to the rear wing, by virtue of it's lower profile. For the 1975 season, the engine produced a competitive 480bhp.

The Austrian driver Niki Lauda won a total of 5 races in 1975 using this car, (his wins coming in the Monaco, Belgian, Swedish, French and United States Grand Prix's) enough to earn him his first Driver's Championship. His team-mate Clay Regazzoni won the Italian GP to give Ferrari 6 wins in total for the year which was enough for Ferrari to clinch the Constructors crown.

9)Mclaren M23

The M23 was never the most technically advanced F1 car, but sound preparation and continual development helped it win 16 grands prix, 2 drivers' and a constructors' world championship in its lifetime.

It was introduced for the 1973 season, and scored pole position with Denny Hulme on its very first outing. Hulme and Peter Revson took 3 wins between them that season, while fiery rookie Jody Scheckter nearly added a fourth. Scheckter was responsible for one of the biggest accidents F1 has ever seen at the 1973 British Grand Prix.Even so,Hunt and Jochen Mass relied on the M23 in the early part of the 1977 season, and even though the car was now 4 years old, it was still competitive.

8)Tyrell P34

This fantastic looking machine was first campaigned by Tyrrell in 1976, at a time when almost all GP cars were powered by the Ford-Cosworth DFV engine. Consequently teams could not rely on a power advantage over their competitors to win races, and had to work on areas such as aerodynamics and packaging to make their cars more competitive. Tyrrell's chief designer, Derek Gardner, decided that reducing the frontal area of the car would bring advantages in speed by reducing aerodynamic drag. By reducing the size of the front wheel, this could easily be achieved, but a second set of front wheels would be needed to give the same area of rubber contact as a larger wheel would have.

For 1976, Goodyear agreed to develop a special small tire for the P34, and provide them for the season.
In 1977, tire technology moved on (as it always does in Formula One) and Goodyear decided not to continue developing the smaller tire for Tyrrell (who was the only customer for such a tire). Consequently, the 1977 car struggled to remain competitive on outdated front tire rubber, and for 1978 Tyrrell reverted back to a more conventional 4 wheel design.

No other team raced a six-wheel car after Tyrrell, but Williams did test a car with 4 rear wheels in the early 1980's. It was never raced though, and current regulations demand that Formula 1 cars have 4 wheels only.

7)March 2-4-0

If Tyrell was front, this was the rear......but this car is showed how much effort to find a better, yet truly outstanding racecar formula.

With this in mind, Herd drew up plans for a six-wheeled car with four driven wheels at the rear and all of the wheels the same 16" diameter. His theory was that with all six tyres the same size as the regular F1 front tyre, the car would not only be slimmer than normal F1 cars but would possess improved aerodynamic performance at the rear with much cleaner air passing over wing. Four driven wheels would also mean better traction and, unlike the Tyrrell, there would be no problem with tyre development since the car would use exactly the same rubber as a conventional F1 car.

Herd called this concept '2-4-0', following the Whyte notation used to describe railway rolling stock: two wheels leading, four driven wheels, zero trailing wheels.

6)Lotus 72D

The Lotus Type 72 was the Formula One car to beat in the early 1970's. The Lotus Type 49 was the dominant car in Formula 1 towards the end of the 1960's, and introduced the Cosworth DFV engine to grand prix racing.

t's wedge shape was derived from the unsuccessful gas turbine powered Type 56B, and it was one of the first grand prix cars to have it's radiators moved from the nose to the sidepods, which improved their efficiency and airflow around the car. Also, it moved the weight bias towards the back of the car, which improved traction. To reduce unsprung weight, the brakes were mounted inboard of the wheels. A large rear wing (for the period), Firestone tires, the proven Cosworth engine and advanced anti-squat and anti-dive suspension geometry (to keep the car level under acceleration and braking, thereby improving the aerodynamics) completed the package.

After 20 wins, 2 drivers' and 3 constructors' championships, the 72 was retired for the 1976 season and replaced by the Lotus 77.

5)Ferrari 126C

The Ferrari 126C was designed to replace the highly successful but obsolete 312T series in use since 1975. The basic chassis was almost identical to the previous car but the smaller V6 turbo engine suited the ground effect aerodynamics now needed to be competitive, and was a better package overall. The engine was fitted with twin KKK turbochargers and produced around 600bhp in qualifying trim, detuned to 550bhp for the races proper. The car proved to be very fast but Gilles Villeneuve found the handling to be atrocious. The engine had massive turbo lag, followed by a ferocious power curve; this upset the balance of the chassis. Coupled to the chassis' hard suspension, the car tended to slide into corners before the ground effect pulled the car back on to the track.

The 1984 season season wasn't as successful, as McLaren introduced their extremely successful MP4/2 car, which was far more effective than the 126C4 and dominated the year. Michele Alboreto won just once and Ferrari finished as runner up in the constructors' championship.

The 126C series cars won 10 races, took 10 pole positions and scored 260.5 points.

4)Brabham BT46B

The fan was great idea of ground effect that has been used in many Supercar for past year, such like F50,Mclaren F1,& Jaguar XJ15 to name a few.

Initial use for cooling the engine has been an excuse for Brabham to use this clever fan-type ground effect. With blessed from FIA,fan car was allowed to enter the race.

The two modified cars were prepared for the Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp on 17 June 1978, for Niki Lauda and John Watson. When not in use, the fan was covered by a dustbin lid, but it soon became clear what the modified Brabham was intended to achieve: when the drivers blipped the throttle, the car could be seen to squat down on its suspension as the downforce increased. Lotus driver Mario Andretti said "It is like a bloody great vacuum cleaner. It throws muck and rubbish at you at a hell of a rate". The legality of the cars was soon protested, but they were allowed to race.

The BT46C only ran in practice for the 1978 Austrian Grand Prix. The drivers complained of reduced revs and straight line speed. It was not used in the race and did not appear again.

3)Renault RE-20T

Renault returned to Grand Prix racing in 1977, having won the very first Grand Prix ever in 1906!

The comeback was built around a superb iron-block, belt driven, four-cam, V6 engine. Although their idea did not produce the hoped for Championship, it did win many races, and they did win on technology: for they led the way for all others to follow.

The first team to win a Championship with a Turbo engined car was Ferrari in 1982 (with a V6 Turbocharged car) winning the constructors championship but not the drivers, which was won by Keke Rosberg in a Cosworth engined Williams. The following year, 1983, saw Nelson Piquet win the first drivers championship in a turbo engined car, with his BMW engined Brabham. From them until 1988, Turbo's reigned supreme, but were banned from 1989 on due to concerns about safety because of the wildly escalating power outputs of these engines. The first Turbo's such as this Renault, produced approximately 500bhp in race tune, but by the mid-80's these engines were putting out over 1000bhp for qualifying and nearly 900bhp in race tune.

Another feature of the RE-20 is it's ground effect aerodynamics. The chassis has two lengthwise channels either side of the central chassis tub which channel air from the front to the rear at high speed. It also has sliding rubber "skirts" which form a seal between the underside of the car and the ground, thereby creating a low pressure effect which literally sucked the car down on the track, greatly increasing downforce and therefore cornering speed as a result.

2)Mclaren MP4/4

The McLaren MP4/4 was the most dominant car in the history of Formula One. It was designed by Gordon Murray, who based the design on his lowline Brabham BT55 car of 1986, and American engineer Steve Nichols

The reason this car was so dominant was due to a combination of an excellent chassis (designed by Gordon Murray) and a superb 1.5 litre turbocharged Honda engine. While the car was excellent, the engine was what made it unbeatable. 1988 was the last year that turbocharging was allowed in F1, and all the other teams decided either to develop their old turbo engines for use in this final turbo season, or to switch to the new 3.5 litre normally aspirated engines which were to become the standard for 1989. The rules for this hybrid season were drawn up to handicap turbo cars by severely restricting the amount of fuel they could use in a race (thereby negating their power advantage over the non-turbo cars, which had an unlimited fuel allowance), meaning most turbo cars had to run at very low boost pressures to ensure they could make the end of the race. Honda decided to develop an all new version of their already highly successful turbo engine, even though it could only be used for one season. This new engine was incredibly fuel efficient, allowing the McLaren's to run at higher boost pressures (hence more power) than the Ferrari's. The Ferrari engine was potentially as powerful as the Honda engine, but not nearly as fuel efficient. Consequently the Ferrari's ran at a lower boost pressure, and were left behind.

1)Lotus 79 (John Player Special Mk. IV)

The Lotus 79 was a Formula One car designed in late 1977 by Colin Chapman, Martin Ogilvie, Tony Rudd and Peter Wright of Lotus. It is considered by many the most significant and respected racing car design of all time.

The Lotus 79 was the first F1 car to take full advantage of ground effects aerodynamics, pioneered in its immediate predecessor, the Lotus 78.

The need for smooth airflow dictated the car must have clean lines; as a result the 79 was one of the most beautiful cars ever to take to the track. Nicknamed 'Black Beauty' by the press and F1 fans alike, for its graceful design and sleek profile and its black and gold livery through sponsorship by John Player Special cigarettes, the Lotus 79 was instantly competitive on its debut, the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. It took pole at the hands of Mario Andretti by more than a second, and won the race comfortably. Andretti said after driving the 79 for the first time that the Lotus 78 was like driving a London bus. Peterson once quipped, after scoring an impressive pole position, that the car was so brilliantly set-up all he had to do was steer.

In its lifetime, the 79 took 7 wins, 10 pole positions, 121 points and won the last drivers' and constructors' world championships for Lotus. The 79 is credited with pushing Formula One into the aerodynamics era, and its influence is still keenly felt on today's modern F1 cars. After Rubens Barrichello drove the 79 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2000, he came away raving about its phenomenal grip and traction, and stated it felt like a modern Grand Prix car.

The ground effect revolutionary,& this was a tribute to the legend of racecar designer,Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman.

Many peoples nowadays seems to depreciate them.Long times ago, this are the most fastest racecars with newly, fresh out technology that seems to be a basis for daily car.Even so,the car was heavily praised by automotive journal & critics, due to their unique design, yet beautifully crafted within timeless grace. Most of this car are heavily raced in top motorsports level such as Targa Florio,ADAC Nurburgring,Zolder 1000km,Le Mans,Daytona 24 Hours & Spa 1000km

So,this is my top ten list for best OPEN COCKPIT SPORTS PROTOTYPE ever created:

10)Ferrari 312PB

Designed to take out the fierce competition by Porsche new bred racer, the 917 series in mid 1970'.At that time,Ferrari was found to be a defected, yet uncompetitive due to the fact that the factory didnt have any expertise to make a perfect monocoque spaceframe design, like Porsche,Lotus & Alfa Romeo did for their new sportscar & F1 debut.

Designed by Mauro Forghieri,an aviation designer, turned up to be Ferrari race car design for a year, design a car that has inboard suspension, steel spaceframe & Ferrari own Flat-12 F1 derivedengine mounted in middle of the chassis,to give more tractable control over presice driving.

But the car was proved to be disappointed by Ferrari standard, since the F1 powerlant reliability that cant last long for 24 hours mark as the end of this car short career. The only notable success was 1972 seasons of Sportscar Wold Championship & Targa Florio which it came to first place in manufacturer standing.

9)Alfa-Romeo 33SC12

Designed by Franco Scaglione in 1976 as update to successfull Alfa-Romeo 33 Tipo, the new design featuring the F1 type taller roofscoop, which was banned following year by FIA,& was Alfa's first twin turbocharged V12-engine and it was introduced around same time as Renault's Formula One turbo engine. In Alfa Romeo engine both engine rows were fed with own turbocharger, that feature was followed by many racecar makers in the following years.

The success continued in 1976 & 1977 World Manufacturer Championship & Sportscar World Championship. After that,Alfa-Romeo was pulled out from Sportscar racing for open wheel racing program with Brabham.

8)Porsche 936

Porsche 936 was a racing car introduced in 1976 by Porsche as a delayed successor to the Porsche 917, which was retired by the factory after 1971. It's name came from using a variant of the Porsche 930's turbocharged engine, as well as competing in Group 6 racing.

It was built to compete in the World Sportscar Championship as well as at 24 Hours of Le Mans under the Group 6 formula, which it won both of. It shared these victories with its smaller production-based sibling, the Porsche 935 which won in Group 5. The open top, two seater spyder was powered by an air-cooled, two-valve 540 hp (403 kW) single-turbocharger flat-6 engine with 2140 cc, or the equivalent of 3000 cc including the 1.4 handicap factor. The spaceframe chassis was a leftover from the 917, with many of the parts also came from the car.

Even this car was not intended for privateer,Joest racing has got a spare rolling chassis with unofficial factory support, making the car was nearly identical but with different name.

From 1976 to 1981, the factory entered Porsche 936 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times except for 1979 seasons when it was beaten by privateer entered Porsche 935/77.

7)Ferrari 312 P

Perhaps one of the rarest Ferrari open top-sportscar in mid 70',this was Ferrari major effort after boycotting sports car racing in 1968 to protest the rule change that also banned their 4 litre Ferrari Prototypes, Ferrari built another 3000cc prototype in 1969, named the 312 P. The 3.0 V12 Ferrari 312P was hardly more than a 3-litre F1 Ferrari 312 with open or closed top prototype Berlinetta body.

Two 312P were entered at Le Mans, now as low-drag setup Berlinettas body. They were 5 and 6 on the grid, but didn't finish. As the result of uncompetitiveness,Ferrari decided to take on new designation & raced the 312,330 P in Can-Am Unlimited & SCCA in 1971.

6)Ferrari 412P
This was Ferrari attempt to build a car for customer from the world famous 330 P4.With Berlinetta & closed bodywork, this car was used by privateers like N.A.R.T,Scuderia Filipinetti,& Maranello Concessionaires.

As planned by Ferrari, the car will be underpowered in torque & power output from Factory team,so they can take a manufacturer & standing victory for they effort. Some customer rolling chassis will fitted with Weber twin choke carburators, abit disappoinment for privateer that expected the car will come with latest LUCAS or SPICA fuel injection,as Porsche do with customer chassis of their 917 series.

5)Ferrari 512 LM

Ferrari used to race with Prototypes (see Ferrari P) until the rules were changed for 1968 limiting Group 6 Prototypes to a maximum engine capacity of 3.0 litres. For the 1970 season, Ferrari decided to do what Porsche had done earlier with the Porsche 917, that is, build 25 examples of a 5.0 L car to allow homologation into the FIA's Group 5 Sports Car category. With the financial help of Fiat, that risky investment was made, and surplus cars were intended to be sold to racing customers.

The motor of the 512S was a total new V12 with 560 PS (412 kW) output. Compared to Porsche's flat-12 monster, it had the disadvantage of not being air-cooled, so it needed a maze of cooling pipes and a heavy radiator. Since the chassis was of sturded steel, reinforced with aluminium sheet, weight was 100 kg more than that of the alloy-framed 917. Notwithstanding the weight difference, the Ferrari 512S and Porsche 917 were theoretically fairly even matched.

But,unlike Porsche that encourage the privateers effort to race together, since the benefit of more powerful customers racecar can be made, thus reducing the costly effort from factory itself to build more race reliable car with advance technology.

4)Porsche 908/03

Porsche,as we know today as the most successful marques at Sportscar racing & other sanctioned racing event, are also know as the harbinger of the next-gen sportscars & other to come.

This is example of finest racing car among top Porsche list of customer race cars, the 908 series. The 908 has won the 1000km Nürburgring in three decades, four years in a row from 1968 to 1971, and again in 1980, now with Turbo-Power. Porsche 908s were still run competitively in 1982, a remarkable feat for a car that was introduced in 1968 and at that time intended to become obsolete after 1969! 908s are still raced today, even after Porsche decided to stop the development & updated version of 908.

3)Nissan R382

This is the car that built by Prince Motor to compete in Group 7 series. When the car was entered the field in 1969,it was known as the year of Japanese major effort to compete & bringing the ultimate victory for their country & for all asian as we know the competition between big american, germany,Italian & United Kingdom are fierce & tremendous. The car featured Nissan's first V12 engine & with three R382s entered in 1969 Japanese Grand Prix, Nissan was able to dominate the field, taking the top two positions after 320 miles. Motoharu Kurosawa and 1966-winner Yoshikazu Sunaku would share the winning car, which finished a lap ahead of the third place Toyota 7.

2)Renault-Alpine A442B

As the only fierce competitor behind Porsche 936,this car has surrounded by major controversy.

Announced in January 1975, the turbocharged A442 made its debut in the Mugello 1000 km race. It still shared the basic design of the A441, but with 490 bhp available it packed a lot more punch. To the surprise of many, the Renault-Alpine team included, it made a victorious debut, beating the Alfa Romeos at home. Unfortunately this was the last victory for the team that season, who were usually let down by the unreliable engine.

The works team fielded two A442 in 'B' specification, equipped with a controversial windscreen, which decreased drag, but also driver visibility. The third car entered was the all new A443, which featured a longer wheelbase and a slightly larger engine. The A443 led for much of the race, but it was forced to retire with engine problems after 20 hours. Luckily one of the A442Bs followed closely behind and surprisingly made it to the finish.

The windscreen canopy was one of the reason why FISA announced for new class of sportscar racing known as Group C.The car was seen as the last car of open top prototype era before closed cockpit would dominated the racing from 1982 to 1994 before the class of Open top prototype is finally revised.

1)Porsche 917/30

It was the car that destroyed all the competition, also the car that proved the sportscar racing could be more faster than open wheel motorsport.Called as "Turbo Panzer" by Can-Am fans, this was the most fastest ever auto racing car in history, putting as much as 1100 to 1580 horsepower at the press of knob.Mark Donohue was the factory driver for this experiment & evolution of 917,as part of Porsche factory to study & make the turbo evolution as we get to use today.

In the 1973 season there was no stopping the 'Turbo Panzer', and Mark Donohue won the championship.

As a side effect of the Porsche dominance, CanAm was quickly losing teams and spectators and halfway through the 1974 season the challenge was cancelled. Porsche had also withdrawn at the end of the 1973, but the 917/30 was given one final outing in 1975. Specifically prepared for a high speed run, Donohue lapped the Talladega race track at an average of 221 mph in the 917/30, setting a new world record. A fitting finale for the Porsche 917's magnificent career. Unfortunately it was also the finale of Donohue's career, who fatally crashed ten days later during Formula 1 qualifying in Austria.

Most of peoples will enjoy & stunned by exterior & outside look of the beauty shape of the car & bike....
but sometimes,it also attractive to just look at the engine bay, where the craftmanship of problem solving, compact engine is being work as artistry monument.....the beauty is form with practicality,in sake for increasing perfomance & more compact design for smaller, yet tight chassis creation.....

So this is my favourite:

FORD GT40 MKII(FORD 427 C.I)

PORSCHE 917(Type 912 Flat-12 5.0 litre)

FERRARI 512S(Enzo Dino V12 5.0 litres)

PORSCHE 935/77 Work TURBO(Type 930 Flat-6 Turbo)

This was not about the horsepower...but more to the "organic look & flowness" of the engine shape itself......

If you got lotsa intresting engine shape...post it here...I love the engine bay so much until I modelled myself a 3d model of racecar engine.....
Group B Rally!

In the 80',this was the year where we see a greatest history of motorsports was ever achieved....

The introduction for Gr.C(World Sportscar Championship,Sportscar World Championship,World Sportscar for makers,IMSA Camel GTP)& Gr.B(Sportscar World Championship,World Sportscar for makers,IMSA Camel GT,World Rally Championship,World Sportscar Racing)

With the ever increasing speed & the new designation of more advance Gr.C racecars, the Gr.B that one time ago that could race together with Gr.C now became outdated due to the speed & avantgarde technologies that was made for Gr.C sportscars....

So,after FIA regulation was mandated the Gr.B car to be raced in World Rally Championship, the rally goers was more than happy to hear that....because the monster of 900hp special homoglated supercar to racing in Sportscar World Championship are going to racing in dirt!

Group B was initially a very successful concept, with many manufacturers joining the premier World Rally Championship, and increased spectator numbers. But the cost of competing quickly rose, and the performance of the cars proved too much, resulting in a series of fatal crashes. As a consequence Group B was cancelled at the end of 1986 and Group A regulations became the standard for all cars until the advent of World Rally Cars in 1997.

The classification of this type of race was proved to be a disaster, yet dangerous for both driver & spectators.
With many fatalities for both driver & spectators, its clear why the Supercar era of rallying are over...

With low homoglation car rules, many manufacturers are enter the premier class of World Rally Championship.
It also one of the very interesting to see the action when almost all of the car will spitting a large fireball from over boosted turbocharger, overcrowded stages & the designation of special homoglated supercars like Porsche 959,Nissan Skyline R30 Silhouette Formula,Metro MG6R4,Lancia Stratos,Delta S4 just to name a few....

Some of most competitive cars in Gr.B rally....

LANCIA DELTA S4
The Lancia Delta S4 is a Group B rally car that competed in the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986, until Group B cars were banned from competition by the FIA. The car replaced and was an evolution of the Lancia 037 Monte Carlo. The S4 took full advantage of the Group B regulations. It featured a mid-mounted engine and all wheel drive for superior traction and handling. The car's 1759 cc four cylinder engine combined supercharging and turbocharging to reduce turbo lag at low RPM. Officially the car produced 550 horsepower (410 kW). Unofficial figures claimed the S4 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h on gravel in just 2.5 seconds. A engine capacity multiple of 1.4 was applied to forced induction engines by the FIA and the choice of 1759 cc put the S4 in the under 2500 cc class which allowed a min weight of 890 kg. The combined super/turbo system was a development of the 037 engine that produced 350 hp (261 kW) with a supercharger only. This was competitive with the Audi Quattro in 1984 which also had 350 hp (261 kW) but by the 1985 season Audi's S1 was homologated with 500 hp (370 kW) plus meaning a turbo had to be added to the S4 engine design to remain competitive.

LANCIA ABARTH 037
The Lancia 037 was silhouette racer. While it was loosely based on the Lancia Monte Carlo (also known as Scorpion in the US and Canadian markets) road car they shared only the center section with all body panels and mechanical parts being significantly different. Steel subframes were used fore and aft of the production car center section, while most of the body panels were made from Kevlar. The mid-engined layout of the Montecarlo was retained, but the engine was turned 90 degrees from a transverse position to a longitudinal position in order to decrease the vehicles polar moment and improve handling. An independent double wishbone suspension was used on both the front and rear axles, with dual shock absorbers in the rear in order to cope with the stresses of high speed off road driving. The 037 is notable as it retained the rear wheel drive layout that was nearly universal for rally cars of the pre-group B period.

LANCIA STRATOS HF "HIGH FIDELITY" GR.B TURBO

With only 492 ever made, the Stratos is very rare to this day.Its also known as the first generation of Gr.B rally car, where the designation was close to the Gr.5 & Gr.7 Sportscar, but with rallying first come to mind.
The car won the 1974, 1975 and 1976 championships in the hands of Sandro Munari, and might have gone on to win more had not internal politics within the Fiat group placed rallying responsibility on the Fiat 131 Abarths. The Stratos won the Monte Carlo Rally with the private Chardonnet Team as late as 1979.[1]

Without support from Fiat, and despite new regulations that restricted engine power, the car would remain a serious competitor and proved able to beat works cars in several occasions when entered by an experienced private team with a talented driver. The final point to the Stratos's racing career at international level took place as late as 1981, at the Tour de Corse Automobile, a World championship event, with a victory of Bernard Darniche.

Just see this video....

Just look at the cornering speed & the overcrowded stages.....purely hell for most driver...

Why the Gr.B was banned:

1986 SEASONS OF WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP(GR.B)

Everything was to go tragically wrong on the "Lagoa Azul" stage of Portuguese Rally near Sintra. Portuguese national champion Joaquim Santos crested a rise to find the road blocked with spectators crowding to see the fastest cars come through. Trying to stop, he lost control of his RS200 and plunged into the crowd. Thirty-one people were injured and three were killed. All the top teams immediately pulled out of the rally and Group B was placed in jeopardy. There was debate following this crash that perhaps a F1 style Super license should be required to prevent drivers like Santos competing in Group B cars

Disaster struck again in early May at the Tour de Corse. Lancia's Toivonen was leading the championship, and once the rally got underway he was the pace setter. Seven kilometres into the 18th stage, Toivonen's S4 flew off the unguarded edge of a left hand hairpin bend and crashed into a ravine. The car landed inverted with the fuel tanks ruptured by the impact. The combination of red hot turbocharger, Kevlar bodywork and ruptured fuel tank ignited the car and set fire to the dry undergrowth. Only a cloud of smoke and the lack of Toivonen's car at the finish indicated that something was very wrong. By the time rescue workers made it to the remote spot (some 30 minutes, by some accounts) all that remained of the car was a blackened frame with the bones of Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto inside. With no witnesses to the accident, it was impossible to determine what caused the crash other than Toivonen had left the road at high speed. Some cite Toivonen's ill health at the time (he reportedly was suffering from flu); other suggest mechanical failure, or simply the difficulty of driving the machine although Toivonen had a career full of crashing out while leading rallies. Up until that stage he was taking stage win after stage win and leading the rally by a large margin with no other driver challenging him.

Incidentally, the crash came exactly a year after Lancia driver Attilio Bettega had crashed and died in his 037. While that fatality was largely blamed on the unforgiving Corsican scenery (and bad luck, as his co-driver, Maurizio Perissinot was uninjured), Toivonen and Cresto's death, combined with the Portugal tragedy and televised accident of F1 driver Marc Surer in another RS200 which killed his co-driver, compelled the FIA to act: Group B cars were immediately banned for 1987. Audi decided to quit Group B entirely after Corsica.
