Hey guys, opening a new thread here for impressions on 21 Nov's TT and also for planning of next year's event!

I can't do much yet because I have stuff to do today, but DO post your own impressions on the TT / ideas for the next meet here!

Okay now guys, the TT is a week away: time to decide where we should gather and - in the event that that place is swamped full of people, a backup venue.

Possible Venues checked on the 13/11, ranked by suitability IMHO (oh, and for clarity, BTS = Berjaya Time Square and LYP = Low Yat Plaza):

1) Crispe Kreme BTS (Berjaya Times Square) - Should be enough space for the meet upstairs, IF the place is not swamped with people come next Saturday. More then enough electrical outlets. Noise level low - though they have ambient music. IF we DON'T enter all at once and make too much noise (haha, audiophiles making noise), there shouldn't be much problem with the management - as long as we all order stuff.

2) Priceless Penang (or something) Cafe on the far corner of the Sony BTS side - Enough seats and lotsa space, didn't see any plugs though. Didn't seem THAT busy. Average noise levels due to it's out-of-the-way-ness. Again as per above in terms of management issues.

3) LYP Food Court - Average-High noise levels (crowd noise mostly) but didn't seem crowded on Fri. No plugs seen. Lotsa seats and space.

4) Mr Teppenyaki LYP (Low Yat Plaza) - It's a restaurant, so not really a place to lepak. But it's deserted most of the time.

5) BTS Food Court - Last resort. Noisy due to roller-coaster, and should be packed on Sat.

Checked out Coffee Bean LYP, it's TINY, so it's out.

If you have any more ideas, please state in the thread and WHY you think it's a suitable choice.

Resistance Adapters

Hey guys, was wondering where I could get 3.5 inch male to female resistance adapter cables? Wondering if an extra ohm or two (or 75) would improve the performance of me IEMs - hear they improve on bass roll-off and stuff...

Especially the PR2, as it actually has a 51 ohm resistance adapter accessory (which I find would be nearly impossible to get, as only the manufacturers have it - and ordering them from china would prove to be another hassle)... Wondering what difference it would make to the sound...

Ah, the Quads... They have served me EXTREMELY well in the past (before I started seriously going into the dark path that is budget audiophilia) and I'd rate them as a very good IEM for the budding audiophile. It's tiny, built like a tank (full metal fuuuiyoh), and you can adjust the sound yourself to your needs (more bass, sir? Try port 1. More details? Try port 3). For this point alone, it's crap worth it.

The nearest thing to it would be the RM800 Sleek Audio SA6...

And another one of their strengths is the fact that they're so small - makes them workable as a pseudo-deep insertion IEM, giving you the option for GREAT isolation when pushed in deep, in exchange of soundstage width.

A shame I find switching between IEMs more convenient compared to switching ports. It sure costs a lot more too...

As a bonus, I'm throwing a couple of freebies you don't get in the standard Quattro box (see above) including my one time exclusive offer: FREE BRIGHT NEON ORANGE FOAM EAR PLUGS - probably one of the most comfortable, isolating tips available; it isolates you from any sound what so ever including the music itself!!!

Breaking news over at Head-Fi.org, for those of you who don't obsessively check the site for a lack of anything better to do (like me). I've been praying for a mic-less version of the NE-7M for quite a while now, and here it is. It's only available in one colour, but if it really does sound the same as the NE-7M, I WANT ONE!

Yeah it looks like the PL-11, but it's said to sound nowhere near that.

$39 should translate to around RM180 PLUS shipping, might be ordering one soon to trash the heck out of it against the SP1, Quattro and PL-11 (that it shares the shell with) if I can work out my finances to afford it.

And yes, it seems I do have too much time on my hands...

♪♥ Nokia XpressMusic 5800 "TUBE" V6 ♪

Introduction

Announced at Nokia's Remix event in London, at the beginning of

October 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a mid-range, music focused

phone, running S60 5th Edition on Symbian OS 9.4, with a 3.2 megapixel

camera, integrated GPS, WiFi and HSDPA connectivity, and a 3.2 inch

touch screen. It's the last item on this feature list which draws

attention to what would otherwise be a fairly standard mid range phone.

For the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is one of Nokia's most widely talked

about (and leaked) phones of recent memory. There's no doubt that it is

going to garner attention, coming in the wake of the recent spate of

touch phones, including, of course, the Apple iPhone. While it's not

Nokia's first touch phone (Nokia 7700/7110) or its first recent touch

device (Nokia N810), it is the first S60 touch enabled phone and is a

significant landmark in Nokia's mobile device story. However, it is

worth noting from the start that it is not "Nokia's touch phone",

instead it is the first in a portfolio of touch enabled phones from

Nokia. This is an important distinction because, while the 5800 can

tell us much about Nokia's touch platform generally, it can only be

fairly assessed in the context of its own market positioning (music

focused, cost of 279 Euro before taxes and subsidies).

General Design and Hardware

The 5800, at 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, is a reasonably small

package. It is similar in size to the N78 (113 x 49 x 15.1 mm), but

slightly heavier at 109g versus 102g. Volume wise, the 5800 is bigger

at 83 cc compared to the N78 at 76.5 cc; it does feel bigger in the

hand, mainly due to the greater taper on its edges. While the 5800 is

significantly bigger than the typical mid-range phone and would do well

to be thinner, it compares favourably to other smartphones and does not

feel over sized.

Thanks to its relatively narrow width it is, proportionally, closer to

the traditional candy bar shape (long rectangle) than most touch screen

based phones (short rectangle). If you think of your typical candybar

smartphone, remove the keypad and lengthen the screen and you'll get

pretty close to the feel of the 5800. The key advantage of this shape

is that, for most people, it will be possible to use the device with

just one hand; even those with smaller fingers should be able to reach

all points on the screen.

The 3.2 megapixel camera focuses well and takes great pictures

in daylight -- indoors is likely a different story, as with most

cameraphones, but there's a rather powerful dual LED flash to help out

with that.

All of this -- in addition to things like GPS, WiFi and a side

-loading microSD slot (there's a free 8GB card included) -- are wrapped

up into an elongated, chubby package, hence the Tube moniker. We'd hate

to have something of its shape and thickness in a tight jeans front

pocket on a regular basis, but we must admit that it's very comfortable

to hold and use with a single hand, something that can't be said for

all touchscreen phones.

Software

It's S60, so if you were hoping for something else you'll be

sorely disappointed. Nokia's done "just enough" to turn the traditional

interface into a touchable one with version 5.0, sizing up icons,

adding finger-friendly buttons in lieu of traditional menu items and so

forth. What Nokia hasn't quite figured out is consistency, requiring

double taps in some places, single taps in others. Scrolling through

most lists requires dragging a scroll bar, pulling down as the list

flies up, but the browser has touch and drag scrolling. Nothing's too

frustrating or unreasonable, but this is no seamless experience.

What's new is a touch-sensitive button above the screen that

drops down the Media Bar for access to music, movies, photos, the

browser and sharing. Not life changing, but quite convenient. There's

also a new home screen with a "Fav Four" of sorts across the top and

little else. Tap that friend, and you can get a quick look at recent

calls, messages and even related RSS feeds. Pretty neat if you're a

loner, but there's no way to add more than four friends, or view

similar info for your regular contacts that don't make the cut.

Luckily, the traditional S60 home screen is also available.

For text input you have four options: handwriting, mini QWERTY

keyboard, full screen QWERTY and alphanumeric keypad. The first two are

stylus-based (that mini QWERTY is truly mini), while the other two are

only available in landscape and portrait modes, respectively. Like we

said in the hardware end of things, the resistive touch means using the

tips of your fingers instead of the pads, which we find a tad

frustrating, but the keyboard in landscape mode is truly gargantuan,

and after an hour or two of learning we're guessing you could rattle

off some pretty lengthly emails or Great American Novels. Luckily, if

you're a T9 fan there's nothing stopping you from keeping the phone in

portrait mode and rattling off text messages with the touchable

alphanumeric keypad, and the phone is frankly too narrow to work well

with QWERTY in portrait. The handwriting recognition looks good enough,

but we revert to a 2nd grade writing level whenever we pick up a pen,

so that stylus is staying firmly in its holster.

We're not convinced the touchable browser is a step up over existing

WebKit implementations on Nokia's other handsets, since the tap to zoom

function is slow and unreliable -- and no, you can't select text from

web pages to copy and paste. Panning around the page is also jittery,

perhaps a tad worse than the G1 -- nobody has managed to pull off

iPhone smooth yet in this department. We were using a slightly early

software build, so some of these problems might be fixed in the final

version, but it wasn't encouraging. Still, there's no denying the

advantages of viewing the web on a 640 x 360 LCD.

We tested out an accelerometer-based driving game, but it was

overly sensitive and no-fun-at-all -- though we're guessing that

wouldn't be a hard fix. The graphics looked pretty good, though. Movies

are potentially this phone's killer app, but you'll have to do the

conversion just right to get smooth playback at full resolution. We did

see some video shot with the phone (that Sea World shot in the gallery)

and it looked pretty good.

Conclusion

If you haven't picked it up by now, Nokia isn't going after the

power users here. The phone will be marketed under Nokia's "Live"

banner, and really concentrates on the most basic communications --

calling and texting -- with a whole bunch of multimedia piled on top.

Nokia's Comes With Music helps on that end of things, and the screen

certainly helps with video, but this is no iPhone when it comes to to

solid media integration or full-featured media player apps. On the

communication side, we're sad to see Nokia almost burying some of its

S60 advantages. Everything's still there, but Nokia didn't put the

gruntwork in necessary to really take advantage a next-gen interface as

it relates to keeping track of emails, social networking, IM and the

correspondences of more than four people. All that said, Nokia isn't

claiming that the 5800 is the be all end all, is releasing it with a

very aggressive price point (€279 unlocked), and promises more where

this came from.

Vista modding goodies!

Hey there guys... Some goodies to share...

1) Vista Visual Master - THE Tweak UI for Vista, or rather, some interesting Vista customization options that include:
- Custom Icons for EVERYTHING (tested on SP1 - screws up your bluetooth gadget icons a bit on Explorer though)
- Custom Bootscreens / Log-On screens (Log-On screen modding tested on SP1)
- ThemeUI.dll patching (NOT TESTED ON SP1, don't try, get proper SP1 patcher from HERE )
- Other stuff to tweak!

Some issues for SP1 machine though... Google first before using... Get it HERE ...

2) Wallpaper Slideshow LT - Wallpaper autorotation for Vista, the best I've used so far. Low memory consumption (as long as you don't open the settings screen - if you do, shut it down and restart the app) and it plays nice with alternative shells + Vista SP1 easy...

3) Switcher - Expose using the DWM's life update... Not lightning fast with the latest Nvidia drivers (fast with the stock factory one somehow), but more then usable on my lappy...

Anybody still using Axims?

Hey there guys, its been a while since I last posted in here (even my M1210 thread is in shambles, I need to go rescue it quick!)... The reason being is that I... well... had my final exams. As always, exams will usually cause me to do strange unbelievable things; and in this semester's case, I went PDA crazy.

Annnnnnd, to cut a long story short, the craziness ended with a second hand Axim x51v. This leads me to wonder, with it being sold second hand left and right, is anyone still holding on to their little engines that could (the x50v and the x51v - after all, they ARE one of the most powerful pure PDA's around, at least until the IPAQ 210 is released here, if ever... )?

Or has every Axim user in LYN succumbed to the lure of smartphones (or, god forbid, the Iphone)?

I'm currently considering a 16GB-32GB CompactFlash for my Axie-Tan and loading unconverted DIVX/xVID Anime and Movies into it as the Axim is more then capable of playing back full size DIVX/xVID files with little slowdown (at least over here with WM6). Couple that with a 32GB SDHC, and you've got 64GB of stuff that fits in your pocket, with a VGA screen to boot!!

Granted, that pocket should be money-dry after buying small pieces of flash memory devices that are more expensive then the Axim itself...

So, anybody here still using their Axims?

And Dell seems like they're gonna provide upgrade kits for those already running 8700GTs (unofficial upgrade kits through ebay anyway)... 8800GT SLI? Talk about gaming goodness, without the associated "oh-I-already-brought-the-8700GT-XPS-1730s" regrets...

Magic Formation: New, lightweight circular dock!

I dunno if anybody posted this already, but here's a new, very interesting circular dock from the guy that brought us WinFlip... MagicFormation!

It is very light on system resources (500k-1MB with the "save physical memory" option checked), very smooth, is very versatile (multiple selectable pages - much like a tabbed dock, system tray functions, customizable PNG icons, customizable layout - straight like a normal dock or the default orbit) and can be started with a mouse gesture (really intuitive stuff here guys) or a keyboard shortcut... It will also suspend itself when it detects a game running (tested with Half-Life 2 Episode 2)...

The only problems are it uses the ugly icons straight from the exe you're pointing it at if no custom icons are specified and the animations are not customizable (only the default magnify animation available)... And make sure to turn off the "use skin images for icons" under the Icons tab in options to get rid of the ugly bubbles that ring your icons...

People... Thanks for all your help in making this thread as lively as it is! We are currently still in need of:

1. More tips and tricks (ones exclusive to the W810i would be good)
2. History of the W810i (if anyone can find it)
3. Parts/Service pricing (Need more info... PM me if you have info about flashing, skinning, and the best prices of any W810i related accessories!)
4. A wiki for the W810i (and how am I supposed to do this>)
5. Frimware changelog (now that a new firmware update has materialized, it seems - R4CM001)

Anything else?

P.P.S Anyone can draw anime/manga? A anime mascot for the W810i would be nice (not absolutely necessary but cute nonetheless... I even have a name for her - it - Eiten-chan). Something like the Lolifox mascot (on my blog page HERE) would be nice...

The one I cobbled up would have to do for now, but anyone? Please?

I don't really see this manga/anime being mentioned much around here (or around anywhere to be exact... only found a few forums talking about it), which is a shame because (at least for me), it's the best craziness this side of Haruhi (both the Suzumiya one and the Ouran one)...

Anyone else here read the manga yet and like it enough to be salivating at the 9/7 launch date (while secretly hoping that Gonzo doesn't butcher the story up too much)?
