ALERT: Chikungunya Virus Outbreak

Attention, everyone

We have just been alerted that Chikungunya Virus Outbreak in Malaysia, spread by mosquitoes, is quite serious. More than 2,000 people are infected down south. There are claims of unreported deaths. Consult a health-care provider or better visit the nearest hospital for chikungunya fever if you showed symptoms such as fever, severe joint pains and rashes.

Four states have been hit, i.e. Johor, Malacca, N.Sembilan and Perak. The worst hit is Tangkak, Johor. Almost all elderly people (age 45 years and above) are infected with this virus. Many people who are infected seek treatment from Tangkak Hospital every day. There were times beds were full, and the hospital could not warded them. Therefore they were discharge after a half day treatment in the ward. This epidemic outbreak has persisted for more than three months.

► Below is the chronology of this outbreak.
1. Infected foreigner workers were bitten by mosquitoes in the plantations.
2. Then the virus were passed on by the same mosquitoes biting the local planters and their families are infected eventually.
3. Now people in this town (Tangkak) are infected as well as others in nearby towns and states.

► Symptoms of Chikungunya:
1. High fever
2. Rashes
3. Chronic joints pain (which will last for > 3months)
4. Concurrent deaths

► Recommendations:
1. Increase ad hoc facilities and manpower in district hospital and clinics.
2. Bring down the population of the vector (mosquitoes)
3. Quarantine the sick people who are infected with this virus.
4. Educate the public how to prevent and contain the disease.

Dr Teo Kim Lai (among the many courageous Pahlawan Volunteers veterinarians involved in the investigation of the Nipah Virus Outbreak,1999 archived at http://www.pahlawan.com.my/voice/VECrisis1.shtml ) recommends that the sick should be quarantined as the virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. CHIK fever epidemics are sustained by human-mosquito-human transmission.

Further information can be obtained from the Health Ministry's website at http://www.moh.gov.my or call (603) 88810600/ 0700 during office hours.

FURTHER READING:
► Chikungunya Di Malaysia
http://www.moh.gov.my/opencms/opencms/moh/...a_malaysia.html
► FAKTA-FAKTA MENGENAI PENYAKIT CHIKUNGUNYA
http://www.moh.gov.my/opencms/opencms/moh/...Chingkunya.html
► Reemergence of Endemic Chikungunya, Malaysia
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EiD/13/1/147.htm
► Chikungunya
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chikungunya
► Chikungunya - Fact Sheet by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control
http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/Health_Topics/Chi...ever/facts.aspx
► Insect Bite Avoidance
http://www.nathnac.org/pro/factsheets/iba.htm

► SAVE LIVES. Please circulate this to fellow Malaysians. All the viral haemorrhagic fevers are in class 3 or 4. Of the VHFs only yellow fever currently has a vaccine and so prevention is based on avoidance of mosquito bites. Risk is highest in the rainy season when mosquitoes are at their greatest numbers.

Prevention
Epidemics have been associated with poor control of mosquitoes. Prevention requires the use of insect repellants and elimination of breeding places for mosquitoes e.g. stagnant water. You can avoid mosquito bites, or reduce the number of bites, by the following...
The Need to be Civil

The Need to be Civil
By Fairplay

When commenting on other people’s views, one should try to illuminate and substantiate rather than disparage. Many readers of Malaysia-Today have written in voicing their opinions on a host of issues. Unfortunately, some either do not understand the reason and spirit of the article or their intention is just to deride the author of the article for the author’s own personal opinion.

What thrill do people get seeing their writings and comments posted on the Internet when they are anonymous?

Just because a person disagrees with the writer who normally does not respond, it does not mean the person is right and the writer is wrong. It merely points to differences in opinion. The same goes to those who comment on other comments.

How can one claim to be smarter than the other when no one knows your background and experiences so others can judge for themselves whether you know what you are writing about.Besides, there is no need for writers to defend what they had written as their only aim is to put forth issues they feel no one else has touched upon.

It is good for everybody to know that for every criticism any writer gets, there are scores others who think otherwise and vice versa. I find many who delight in making disparaging remarks are those who are afraid of their own shadows. They use pseudonyms to be safe. How can a healthy debate exist when we do not know who had written what and from what perspective?

An example is the essay, “Are we being held captive by the Engineers and Technologists?” which I feel was a philosophical and moral as well as a religious question. It concerned Man’s inherent greed to possess things that they do not necessarily need. And these things are not shared equally by all of Mankind but for the enjoyment of the few.

The writer was not asking for people to own junk as cars or to stop keeping up with technology. From what I understood it to be, he was merely saying there is no need to keep trying to keep up with the Joneses, and especially so during these trying times. The newspapers have been highlighting the so-called hardships people face nowadays, what with their high RM$1000 utility bills (how does anyone use so much electricity and water is beyond me), having to pay for their mobile phone bills (can they not live without it?), and not being able to afford going to fancy restaurants anymore (is this really a hardship?). Why insult the writer for having his view?

Pick out the salient points and either ignore the rest or comment on why you disagree with him and on which parts. Anonymous writers usually fail to understand and appreciate that many write for the joy of writing. There are no rights and wrongs in having an opinion. No one is right all the time … nor wrong all the time either. Authors just want to share their original views with others.

Comments made should be substantiated and not merely to state whether they agree or disagree. There is no point in this. And remember this: People who claim to be intelligent must show intelligence. Being disparaging without a reason shows otherwise.

http://www.malaysia-today.net/2008/content/view/9075/1/

Maybe this should be pinned at LYN to make it a better place for all to hang out together.
Think about it. What say you?
How else can we promote this campaign effectively?

Serious Talk: Below was published under Letters in Malaysiakini.com - do you read that column?

Malaysiakini.com | Letters
Enough, we want good public transport
Foong Wai Fong and Pat Lu | Jun 20, 08 4:40pm

With the whopping fuel hike of June 4, the nation is now caught in the whirlwind of spiraling inflation. Rising prices creates an additional burden that further aggravates an already difficult life in which Malaysians are struggling to make ends meet.

We now fear that our family’s income will be further threatened if our employer cannnot take the financial stress of rising cost; we would lose our jobs or face a salary cut in the very near future. We know this is real and coming very soon if nothing is done to avert the crisis from realising itself.

Needless to say, when that happens, my family’s livelihood would be put under immediate danger. Not only do we worry about the danger of hunger and losing our shelters, we are also worried sick about the increasing crime and security dangers arising from higher unemployment and real hardships where survival guides human behavior.

We want to suffer no more. We want the government to act promptly to avert the suffering.

We, the rakyat, are ready to adjust but we need the government to put in place the necessary conditions to enable this adjustment or change to take place. A paradigm shift as well as radical adjustments in our infrastructure and operating model must be implemented.

As such, we ask you, our members of parliament and state assembly persons, to communicate immediately this dire and painful situation we are in to the government and ask the authorities to take immediate actions on the following:

1. In order to prevent the economy from sliding into a major contraction, the government must speedily put in place a comprehensive plan to help businesses, especially the SMIs. To cushion the financial impact of the fuel hike; allow businesses to migrate to the higher energy cost over a period of three years so minimum disruptions will happen to employment. Jobs must be saved before the rakyat could adjust to a more efficient lifestyle.

2. The rakyat know the importance of conserving fossil fuel and the need to switch to other more efficient transportation modes using lower cost fuel or fuel-efficient vehicles. For the benefit of the middle-class, especially the lower-middle class, the government must focus and expedite efforts in putting in place an integrated network of pubic transportation web.

Efficient public transportation is the main artery of the city, which enables the average wage earners, petty traders and students to function and to be productive.

Throughout Malaysia, there is no efficient system of public transportation that allows the rakyat to adjust to a less car-dependent lifestyle. There is no infrastructure in place for the rakyat to switch to any alternatives. The government must now treat this as a priority and work round the clock to develop the alternative.

The following must be given top priority with a blueprint for action and timetable for completion:

a. Make available small and feeder buses that will help the rakyat to get to the main arteries of Rapid KL and Penang bus hubs and LRT stations. If these routes are not profitable, help the operators with a subsidy.

b. Increase the efficiency of the existing LRT lines and the Rapid buses by reconfiguring the routes and road networks to enable a faster and smoother flow. Rationalise all the privatised tolled highways and seek ways to balance the interest of the private operators and the rakyat.

c. Qualify and train bus drivers against an accepted standard to ensure they are competent and professional so the safety of the passengers can be ensured. Make sure that public transportation paths and routes are safe, and that wherever emergencies or eventualities arise, emergency rescue services are available immediately. A 999 rescue and support system similar to that of the US needs to go hand-in-hand with public security.

d. Provide free, safe, well-lit and clean parking lots for cars, motorbikes and bicycles at strategic and high-density entry points along the main transportation arteries. These public spaces must be come with surveillance provided by the local police.

e. Work to introduce and popularise bicycles as a feeder vehicle. Work with the local authorities to ensure bicycle paths are repaired and installed to allow cyclists to be their own feeder link to the main transportation hubs; build rain shelters and plant trees along these paths to provide shade and protection against the rain and take care to ensure these shelters are lightning proof.

Explore a private-private partnership for bicycle rental service modeled after the Cyclocity Project of Paris where users could enjoy free bicycle service throughout the city.

f. Build well-equipped, free, public restrooms and make it mandatory for office buildings to include public bathrooms to enable ordinary wage earners to take a shower upon arrival should they decide to cycle to work. To help Malaysians to change to this healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, the supporting amenities must be created and provided at no charge.

g. Whenever and wherever it is found to be more effective and efficiently implemented, devolve power to the state governments and/or local municipal authorities to implement the above.

It would be faster and more effective to achieve an efficient public transportation web if the resources and power are devolved to the state level; while the federal government supports with regulation, expertise and advisory. Foreign direct investment and expertise can be sought to participate in these transformations.

3. Make available low-interest loans from finance companies and private banks for cars to be converted to run on more efficient fuel, such as gas. Increase the number of NGV stations in key residential areas within the next six months to make the average wait for filling gas to be less than 10 minutes.

Franchise the NGV stations to private landowners so there would be no issues of land acquisition and a good network can be built in a short time. With gas at RM0.64 per liter compared to RM2.70 per liter for petrol, the savings can help many businesses and individuals to cushion the impact of stagnation of income and inflation (stagflation).

4. On the macro-level, we want the government to make a determined effort in reviewing the tolled roads and the traffic flow in all Malaysian cities as well as to critically examine toll collection to reduce the burden on the rakyat.

Since the service cannot be improved by the existing operator/s, we expect the government to rationalise and liberalise the transportation market as soon as possible to allow competition to drive efficiency.

5. All infrastructures related to transport, logistics as well as energy flow, including gas pipelines, must be made to work to the maximum to justify the investment in them. The spending from allocations must now be worked on to yield efficiency and productivity. We want the government to reveal the true state of our energy position and how this nation’s future energy needs will be met.

6. The new task force to manage this task must be given Key Performance Index (KPI) indicators to guide their performance. As this matter is one of critical national importance, the government must ensure the right expertises is gathered to do the job, and anyone not performing on the job must be replaced.

Yang Berhormat(s), a national crisis of mega-proportions is brewing and we want to get to work immediately to stop this. Please take this message as a serious SOS call, get organised and return a peaceful and secure life to us all. Let’s make sure that the nation will not plunge into chaos by acting promptly in a crisis mode.

Ask the government to give this looming crisis its top priority and mobilise the entire government machinery to achieve the new infrastructure in the shortest time possible.

This is a very trying time and only by working together (political affiliations aside), we shall all survive. It is the Malaysians who make Malaysia. Malaysians boleh!

‘People are The Boss’. Sign petition here.

---------------------------------

Another question - How can you help to promote this campaign effectively?
We have listed some options at http://www.pahlawan.com.my
Much appreciated if you can add on here.
MALAYSIA TODAY | NO HOLDS BARRED
Rosmah at murder scene
By Raja Petra Kamarudin

My informer states that Acting Colonel Aziz Buyong was the person who placed the C4 on various parts of Altantuya’s body while being witnessed by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Norhayati.

"It's mindboggling!" - That's how Raja Petra Kamarudin's statutory declaration alleging that Deputy Prime Minister Najib's wife was at the murder scene of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu was described today.
An aide to Najib Abdul Razak also said they were aware of this latest claim made by Raja Petra, who also runs the 'Malaysia Today' website.

"At the moment, we are looking into it. This is a very mind-boggling statutory declaration," said the aide when contacted.

The latest allegation hurled at Rosmah Mansor was made by well-known blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin via a statutory declaration (below) signed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Wednesday.

The aide however refused to comment if any action could be taken against Raja Petra.

Najib and Rosmah (left) have repeatedly denied they are linked to the killing of Altantuya, describing the widely-known allegations was nothing more than ‘slander and concocted stories’.

In his latest bombshell, Raja Petra accused Rosmah as among three individuals who were present when Altantuya was murdered on October 19, 2006.

"I have been reliably informed that between about 10pm on October 19, 2006 and early hours of the following day, the night Altantuya Shaariibuu was murdered, three other people were also present at the scene of crime," he said, according to his two-page statutory declaration.

He named the two other individuals as one acting colonel Aziz Buyong, who is described as ‘a C4 expert’ and the latter’s wife, known only as Norhayati, who is also said to be Rosmah’s aide de camp.

Full story, visit http://www.malaysia-today.net/2008/content/view/9050/1/

Just lost for words right now... top of mind: truth always prevails, just a matter of time....

What say you?

Hi all, need help.

Please recommend a fast and reliable free Comment Box to use as Pahlawan Volunteers are now running a campaign to direct MPs and ADUNs to build an efficient public transportation system at http://www.pahlawan.com.my - this is to enable the public share their ideas to push this campaign further; and supporters (who blog about the campaign) can add their links at our site too.

The one I'm currently using, Haloscan.com, more often than not slows down the loading of pages tremendously especially on weekdays as seen at http://www.assuntaalumni.com ...we cannot afford this to happen as the campaign gains momentum.

BTW, please support this campaign too for the sake of your fellow Malaysians affected by the petrol price hike. Blog it or email blast to your mailing lists.
Natural mosquito and insect repellent grass

Citronella Grass is a natural mosquito and insect repellent, grown surrounding plots in organic farms in Melaka, and Perak (the ones I've visited many years ago). Looks like lemon grass (serai) , but this cannot be eaten.

Other Uses:

1. Keeps cockroaches away.
Place in corners of closets, kitchen cabinets, bathrooms, storerooms, and vehicles (back booth and under car seats). Replace 1-2 weeks after fragrance is gone.

2. Keeps mosquitoes away.
Place near or under your bed and near open windows. Replace once a week.

3. Keeps flies and bugs away.
Plant near dustbins and back garden.

4. Aromatherapy - calming effect helps to relieve nervous tension and stress.
When feeling stressed, crush a leave in your hands, place close to your nose and take a deep breath.
Keep it in your college/office bags and drawers too!

It's growing outside my home under the pinang tree in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. Volunteers are welcome to collect this and plant in orphanages, old fol homes, etc. In addition to that, grow the gift of citronella grass in your garden or outside your home too so you can give to your neighbours and friends to do the same.

Spread the love.
Interested, call me.
Petrol Price Hike Jokes

I almost fainted doing it

We were supposed to do it after watching P Ramlee The Musical on Wednesday. The show started late because of some nasty storm and people were stuck in a massive traffic jam all over town.

It was already past midnight when the show ended. We headed to the National Press Club for some drinks and by the time supper finished, I wasalready too sleepy.

Yesterday was a more relaxing day. Can't hang on to it any longer, we both realised. We ended up at our favorite place. It was deserted when we got there at around 2 am.

Making sure no Mat Rempit gang were watching, I gently pry opened her moist orifice and inserted her. She seemed uncharacteristically quiet and insatiable. I've been with my baby for six long years and I know how she normally reacts.

During our travel together, we have had our fair share of quickies in all sorts of strange places. But yesterday, we were at familiar territory. Heck, we were doing it at the exact same spot where we first did it. Was that not romantic enough?

Sigh. She's not herself, somehow. I was thinking to myself as I held on to her side; maybe she is still mad I forgot the cap the last time.

I yanked it out hastily and the white stuff emerged from the slit. I took a closer look at it and my knees went weak. I almost fainted. OMG! I just pumped one hundred forty six ringgit of petrol!!!!

© 2008 TV SMITH
Source: http://www.tvsmith.net.my/duasen/080608_fainted.html

Kechara Soup Kitchen is a Community Action Group, which consists of volunteers from all walks of life distributing food to the homeless and urban poor in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Every Saturday, come rain or shine, a group of volunteers gather in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to distribute halal food and offer first aid to the homeless. When sponsorship allows, we also distribute umbrellas during the wet seasons.

From distributing 20 packs of food when we first started, we are now able to distribute around 130 packs of food each Saturday. This is due to the generous sponsorship from kind donors, who often join us to distribute to the needy. Our giving to all, regardless of race, gender, religion or culture is the basis of our motto: Hunger Knows No Barriers.

Our medium term goal is to have a permanent SOUP KITCHEN in a building in the centre of town, as near as possible to the urban poor, so we can provide food, shelter and counseling to empower the homeless to regain dignity and become employable and independent. To achieve this, we also have a long term goal to create a NURTURE CENTRE.

To achieve this, we need help - any contributions are welcome, whether in financial donations or volunteering your time, skills or resources.
TM Net Speedometer

I've just been to TM Net Speedometer at http://202.188.95.52:8080/speedometer/

Questions:

1. Where to find out which is the exchange for the correct speed for Taman Tun Dr Ismail area? All three gave different readings between 254 and 322 Kbits/sec at:
GW1 - GW Brickfields
GW2 - GW Kelana Jaya
GW3 - GW Cyber Jaya

2. I've upgraded from 512Kbps to 1Mbps last week. Why is my speed so slow? Is it Streamyx or something else I've to look into?

Please advice. Thanks.
