PC cannot wake up from sleep

I'm one of those who dun switch off the PC after each usage, instead I always go to standby/sleep mode. But ever since I switched my graphics card from nVidia to ATI Radeon 9550, my PC can never recover from sleep mode, it will restart itself. I updated the graphics driver frequently, but still the problem persists. The weird thing is, I have 2 users on my PC, when I log on using the other user, there was no problem (I only realized this last nite). Anybody have any idea ?

Thanx in advance.

Nike buys Umbro

I saw this on Bigsoccer.com forum.

QUOTE

Nike scores with Umbro takeover

Written by: AFP

LONDON (AFP) - US sportswear giant Nike ventured further into the British football market on Tuesday after agreeing to buy rival Umbro, maker of the England soccer strip, for 582 million dollars (408 million euros).

The cash bid, worth 195 pence per Umbro share, values the British group at 285 million pounds, a joint statement said. The offer represents a premium of about 61 percent to the closing price of 120 pence per Umbro Share on October 17.

At the close of London trade Tuesday, Umbro's share price stood at 190.25 pence, up 15.30 percent from Monday's finish.

"We are fully committed to helping Umbro reach its full potential and we are delighted that Umbro's board is unanimous in its support of our offer," said Nike president and chief executive Mark Parker.

Nike, which makes the football kit for the Brazil national team and English Premiership clubs Manchester United and Arsenal, is purchasing a group which also provides sportswear for the Norway, Republic of Ireland and Sweden football squads.

High profile players endorsing the Umbro brand include England and Chelsea captain John Terry and his national team-mate Michael Owen.

"This is an excellent deal for all our stakeholders," Umbro chief executive Steve Makin said of the Nike offer.

"It provides great value for shareholders and exciting prospects for our colleagues, partners and customers around the world."

Nike's offer is subject to approval by Umbro shareholders and regulatory bodies. The US group's approach already has the backing of English football's governing body, the Football Association, which has worked with Umbro for more than 20 years.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick said: "Nike has provided firm assurances that the FA relationship with Umbro will be protected and enhanced, and we look forward to working closely with both companies moving forward."

Nike has expanded aggressively into the football market over the past few years and aims to become the world's leading football brand by the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Takeover speculation last week caused Umbro shares to rocket, boosting investors while fans were picking over the national side's 2-1 defeat to Russia which makes qualification difficult for the 2008 European Championships.

Nike intends to operate Umbro as a stand-alone affiliate brand in the same way as Converse, which the Beaverton, Oregon-based firm acquired in 2003.

Earlier this year, German sportswear manufacturer Puma was bought by French luxury goods empire PPR. In 2006, Puma's German rival Adidas took over US sportswear group Reebok.

I've always liked Umbro products. My first ever soccer boots was Umbro, & right now I still have a pair of Umbro SSG boots. But, one of few real football brands remaining is sold off. Open for discussion....

[addedon]November 6, 2007, 10:38 am[/addedon]This was one of the newer posts on Bigsoccer.com on this topic :

QUOTE

Does not look so sure now that Nike will be able to carry through with the full purchase.

JJB own 10.1%, and Sports Direct owns 29.9% A handy 40% of the company. Both have come out and said they are not keen in selling to Nike. With such numbers, Nike can only hope to be a majority shareholder. OK, that gives them significant clout, they cannot control Umbro's future.

It's still subject to approval, & if the English is determined to keep their own brand, maybe the deal won't materialize.

Politicians barred from Sports Association

From The Star :

QUOTE

Ministers and deputies told to quit posts in sports bodies

By DEVID RAJAH and SIM LEOI LEOI

PUTRAJAYA: All ministers, deputy ministers and parliamentary secretaries have been barred with immediate effect from holding any management or executive positions in sports associations or bodies.

However, mentris besar, chief ministers and Members of Parliament can continue to helm or hold positions in such bodies.

The decision was made at the weekly Cabinet meeting here yesterday. It follows the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin's decision to step down as chairman of the KL World Endurance (Equestrian) Cup.

It is understood that Sultan Mizan had conveyed this to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi recently.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said the Cabinet felt that there were many personalities, including former athletes and corporate leaders, besides politicians who could lead sports bodies and associations.

She said the Prime Minister suggested that ministers and deputy ministers, as well as parliamentary secretaries, should take the lead from the King and stop being involved in the running of sports bodies and concentrate on their official duties.

"But they could remain as figureheads or advisers of the bodies they are in.

"The Cabinet also does not want the image of a minister to be tarnished if a sports association fails to perform or fulfil targets as this may lead to them being made the 'scapegoat'.

"The funding sports associations receive from the Government is not based on the personalities leading them but on the performance of the sports, especially when we are going to introduce a rating system soon on this," Azalina said.

She added that mentris besar and chief ministers were not affected by the ban as the Cabinet had no jurisdiction over them.

"The Prime Minister did not mention anything about their status," she told reporters.

Azalina said the decision would not adversely affect sports bodies that were being helmed by ministers, their deputies or parliamentary secretaries.

She also noted that sports like bowling, squash and badminton had been doing well even without the active involvement of politicians and they were being run by corporate figures or ex-athletes.

Azalina said Cabinet ministers holding management positions in sports bodies agreed with Abdullah's suggestion to step down.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the ban was to allow ministers to focus their whole attention on the administration of the Government.

"They can continue being advisers or patrons of the sports bodies, and they can still contribute to the development of the sports," he said.

Asked if the ban could have been spurred by the deteriorating condition of the national football team, Liow said many politicians had contributed greatly to the sports bodies they had posts in.

"But we want to protect the ministers and their image. The national football team's failure is not the issue at all," he said.

Now, let's see if this can bring about the desired changes in our sports. But I guess it won't give immediate results, let's give 'em more time shall we...

Goalkeeper's thread

Let's start a new thread just for keepers. I'll start.

Currently I'm playing for Comic Corner FC in the KL Division 1 league. I'm almost 30 already & this can be considered my final fling in football. I'll see if I can play until I'm 35. At my age now, it's pretty difficult to secure a place in any of the current state teams.

Started playing as keeper when I was 12. Played some other sports (cyclist for Selangor & national teams from 1993 until year 2000, played basketball after that until last year), before returning to my roots late last year. Played for my school, college, was selected into UKM team, played for my local neighbourhood teams, etc.

First ever gloves was bought in 1989, brand was Lion. It was a cotton gloves with ping-pong type palm. Then I bought a full leather gloves which gets very, very hard when dry. I've worn Henberg, Umbro, Reusch, Nike, Puma & Joma gloves throughout my career (if U could call it that). Currently own 3 pairs, Nike Tiempo Grip, Puma King SL & Joma Golden.
