Blog Advertising Revenue for Tech Bloggers

Hi,

We at Advertlets.com, an Asian Blog Advertising Network would like to see how we can match advertising opportunities better with Malaysia's tech bloggers. (PS: we're the same guys behind RedesignMalaysia.com, Josh.com.my, etc)

As we can see, on the international front, sites like Gizmodo and Engadget are the top blogs on Technorati, so its not too hard to imagine that Asians would be interested in the subject of tech and gadgets as well. We'll like to ask, how many of you here are active tech bloggers? And your URLs? Would assist us greatly in putting some ad campaigns together.

Cheers.

Q&A With Advertlets.com (Official)

Hi,

This is Josh Lim here, CEO of Advertlets.com, an asian blog advertising network. I'm usually here on Lowyat for the RedesignMalaysia/local broadband related topics, but I noticed there have been some of you with questions on how to earn with Advertlets, speed & uptime, policy, and general queries.

Some of the most frequently asked questions can be found here:
Advertlets KnowledgeBase. From time to time, we add in new questions and answers, which brings me to my next point:

I'm starting this thread so that I can answer more of questions from Lowyatters. Most, if not all of you are tech savvy and I've been seeing some interesting and well thought of questions so far. I'll be combing through the rest of the forum and attempting to paste in and answer some of the existing ones, however, do feel free to add new questions here and I'll answer them. Thanks!

TMNet CEO Visits Streamyx Customer,Earl-ku's House

The Story In Summary:

1. Earl, not happy with TMNet, wrote a letter to The Malay Mail
2. The Malay Mail published the letter.
3. He got a couple of phone calls.
4. Next thing he knows, the CEO of TMNet is in his house, sitting on his bed
5. Earl shows the CEO his connection speed of 10-12Kb/s
6. CEO plugs in his own laptop and gets 160-170Kb/s
7. When Earl asked...how can the speed be so different?
8. They said its maybe because of "spyware", or his "processor".
9. Earl is still not happy.
10. Earl tests his connection again later in the day.
11. His speed is now 130-155 Kb/s. Wow.
12. My speed still sucks.
13. So, when can I expect a visit?

You can read the full thing at RedesignMalaysia: His Name Is Earl And He Got TMNet's CEO to Visit His House!

New local blog advertising services launched!

Hi guys,

We at Josh Lim & Associates have launched a new blog advertising service - Advertlets.com. Just so you know, we're also the same people behind the RedesignMalaysia.com initiative, a campaign for better broadband here.

What's the main selling point? Well, I guess some of you are signed up with Google Adsense - are you earning anything so far?. I don't think so, unless you're LiewCF. I think it's a problem currently - that there are not enough local, and relevant advertisers.

In solution to that, through Advertlets.com we've found a way to:

- let bloggers earn more, through having localized advertisements
- build more confidence for advertisers to put their advertising in blogs, by providing detailed demographics (eg, gender, age, profession, etc).
- made a very innovative AJAX engine where blog visitors can quickly take polls - these polls help to get demographics data for blogs, and also, bloggers can use the polls to find out more about their blog audience

Currently, we are running the open beta - you can see a few sites that already have Advertlets installed:

Joyce Wong - KinkyBlueFairyJoyce Wong - KinkyBlueFairy
Hong Kiat.com
Yvonne Foong
RedesignMalaysia - For Better Broaband, For The Rakyat!

We would love to have your feedback, and be glad to answer any questions you might have. Do check out the blogger FAQ section too though

Oh, and...the first 200 qualified bloggers to join the program and blog about it get RM50 each...

Broadband Complaints By Area / Best ISP in area

Hi guys, this is something new that we are working on for redesignmalaysia.com. Currently, we have a broadband map, but it only shows coverage, and doesn't factor in user complaints and comments.

The idea behind doing a community network monitoring and rating service would be:

- Choose the best ISP for your area
- The ability to see the average speed of people in your area
- Problems are posted online - see which ISP resolves problems fastest
- Choose a place to stay/set up a business based on how good the broadband coverage is in that area

Below are some concepts of what we have planned, would love to have your feedback, and how to improve this further:

01. Basically people can comment on their area. In this screenshot, Petaling Jaya is selected, and there are 18 comments currently.

Notice the sidebar on the left, showing ranking (how good the broadband quality in the area is compared to the rest of Klang Valley), Average Ping, Dominant Service Provider, as well as Uptime, Speed & Satisfaction. Some of these are calculated (eg, numbers and ping and speed), and others are voted on by the users (eg, satisfaction.)

02. This screenshot shows how comments can be displayed - a user avatar quickly displays the emotion of the user (sad, frustrated, happy, etc), and a short excerpt of the users comments.

03. This shows a detail of the complaint.

04. This shows the submission screen. Notice the dropdown on "Services Quality". I was thinking, how many categories can there be for problems? This is what I came up with:

- Service Quality
- Uptime
- Speed
- Access (eg, cannot access BT)
- Coverage
- Out of 5KM radius
- Insufficient ports
- Physical Problems
- Modem / Router
- Line
- Wiring
- Technical Problems
- Network Configuration
- Packet loss

Anyone can suggest any more?

Appreciate your input on this. We're looking to have as much feedback as possible to build this into a very powerful tool.

high traffic, local content sites, no money...

Does anyone here have a high traffic website, focused on local content that doesn't make much/or does?

I find that Google Adsense doesn't seem to have many ads from Malaysian advertisers, however, is there anyone here making any good money through other advertising networks?

For example, LiewCF.com does well (and apparently blogging is his main source of income) because he focuses on international tech content - which attracts good affiliate programs for e-commerce, and high paying Adsense words.

However, are there any bloggers locally, making good money off an international/asian advertising network, writing local content, targeted at Malaysians?

Mesh network - P2P style Community Broadband!

Hi guys,

One possibility for better broadband here is the creation of a mesh network, similiar to FON - The World's Largest Wi-Fi Community - check out the site and you'll see the concept. Basically everyone is a "hub" in a way - the connection comes from a main transmitter/various sources, and then it hops from house to house - everyone transmits/receives as well. It's kind of like P2P, but in real life.

I'm not sure of the legality of it (whether we can retransmit our Streamyx connections to others, even if its idle), but what if we were to use say, other services, or to collectively lease one large pipe?

In theory, what you would need is a good connection (leased line/satellite/HSDPA/WiMax), and a way to spread it across a certain area, perhaps through a combination of hardware and open source (Open Source WLAN Management)

However, let's try to assess where everyone is, to determine where we could start.

Let's assume a fee of RM50-RM80 a month for a reliable 1-2MBps connection, with no throttling.

Let me hear your thoughts on this...
Joint project for better broadband in Malaysia

Hi guys,

I think most of you here are aware of redesignmalaysia.com, a broadband reform site. Thanks to your forum sigs and links, lowyat.net accounts for nearly 5% of all our traffic since launch. And of course, I'm quite sure a lot of people here also visit the site regularly, not through links.

What I would like to ask is the possibility of a joint campaign. Some ideas include

Peaceful protest in front of TM building
What is the proper process to apply for this? Would you join in? Good thing is that we can get major news coverage, and they would have to address some comments, eg, when the throttling is going to end.

Giant media campaign
Buy media space, display car stickers, "broadband here sucks!", give out balloons, T-shirts, something like DiGi's TheTruthAboutPrepaid campaign.

Giant petition/advertisement
Firefox users did this before - Thousands of them all donated money to place a full page advertisement in the New York Times, telling people there's a better browser than Internet Explorer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_Firefox

Business Angle
Help out TMNet's competitors/invest in them. Lobby for ASPs to get ISP license. Etc.

Start our own ISP/multiple source reseller/VPN.
Lowyat has roughly 70,000 users (correct me if I'm wrong), if each were to give RM100, that's RM7,000,000.00. RM7 million. It's unrealistic I know (not everyone will give money), but the idea is probable, but perhaps what's interesting is the method of implementation - it has succeeded somewhat.

See this example: http://www.wireless-thing.com/2006/10/04/r...less-broadband/

Basically some residents of a township banded together, and formed their own ISP, tied up with Jaring. And then they got a deal RM55 cheaper and with free VOIP.

What do you guys think of the following ideas? Please give your comments, thanks.

Compaq X1000 Screen Problem

Hi, I'm wondering. Is there anyone here who specializes or can point me to someone who is good in repairing Compaq laptops? I have a 2 year old Compaq X1000, and the screen has stopped working.

Have sent to a few people, including the official Compaq/HP people, but they have been unable to fix it...not without replacing the motherboard which would cost a bomb. I have been told that there is a way to do it through soldering and replacing individual components. Can someone help me with this? Thanks.

Hi all,
This is Josh Lim here. This is my first post (been an active lurker for the past year), however, my colleague momochi_zabuza is pretty active here. Reason why I'm posting this is because I'm working on a project that aims to address the current broadband problems in Malaysia. However, it will need the support of tech savvy consumers such as yourselves to work. The project is called RedesignMalaysia.com - Redesign Malaysia, and one of the key features of the site is a internet broadband coverage map.

Would appreciate your comments on the mapping system as well as comments on the broadband coverage to your area. Please send constructive criticism and comments to info@redesignmalaysia.com.

Needed
- Area comments (General writeup on broadband coverage in Ampang Jaya for instance)
- Service providers (who covers which area)
- User comments (Specific comments on internet access in your home or office, etc)

Known issues and future upgrades for the map:
- Level 2 placemarks to be added in (Eg, under USJ - USJ 2, 3, 4, etc)
- Map graphic quality to be improved (more zoom levels)
- More flexible commenting system (people can make comments directly on the map itself, at a specific geographic location)
- More community functions (see the community tab on the map)

Hopefully, you all can support this project, as I feel (and I'm pretty sure most of you feel the same) that broadband coverage is one of the things that most desperately need to be addressed in Malaysia. Thanks

Unpinned due to inactivity - yongkailoon
