Beware - P1's sending promos to your email

So this past week, I began receiving promotional mails from P1 - the first one promoting P1 W1MAX, and a second mail from Ruumz promoting P1's 15Malaysia event. The first one had an unsubscribe link (which I promptly used), while the second doesn't (bad practice Ruumz, badddd).

I believe they obtained my email through my registration with them through Wireless @ KL project. That happened about a year ago. So they've laid dormant for about a year before a brilliant person (persons?) decided to do something with the email addresses.

It would be unfair to call this spam as I may have opted-in to receiving promos when I signed up. Giving them the benefit of doubt here, even though I'm pretty sure I would've unchecked those opt-in checkboxes if the option was provided.

Anyway, hope this post serves as a warning to anyone wishing to register with anything related to P1 - because if the trend this week continues, your mailbox will be eagerly filled with promotional offers. And meanwhile, I'll try to delete my WirelessKL account and see if the mails continue to come in.

wkkay's 6x20-minute sleep cycle attempt

Contrary to this subforum's name, I'm keeping a journal of my sleep

I'm trying a method of sleep called polyphasic sleeping, where 20-minute naps are taken at four-hour intervals. I have no idea whether it will work out, we'll see..

28/Jun 0000-0020 - didn't manage to sleep, but felt sleepy towards the end of my nap. when i switched the lights on, i was very awake.

28/Jun 0400-0420 - didn't manage to sleep again, and didn't feel sleepy towards the end. woke up immediately. it was hard concentrating on tasks. i gave up working at about 6:30, deciding to read a book and play around with a gym ball instead. couldn't focus on either.

28/Jun 0800-0825 - lengthened the alarm by +5 minutes to allow myself more opportunity to sleep. didn't manage to sleep again, and didn't feel sleepy towards the end. woke up immediately, took a shower.

28/Jun 1200-2000 - okay, epic fail. i slept through the alarms, a full 8 hours..

Today I saw the Acer Aspire Revo nettop and it came with this keyboard. I've been looking for a keyboard without a numpad for a very long time, but the ones I've found so far have been crappy (e.g. the A4tech).

This one on the other hand, feels really good! The keys are a bit springy.. a real delight to press.

Problem - it's not sold separately! Guess I'll have to find it on ebay or someone who doesn't want theirs.

[attachmentid=1014184]

Netmyne CBJ2 strange behavior.

I started seeing strange behavior for a few weeks where connections got dropped randomly. It annoyed me enough that a few days back, I checked to see why they got dropped. Through some tcpdump, I found that something was intercepting connections to my server. I also found that that same thing is intercepting connections on all ports!

Here's a nmap of port 65535 across all of 202.71.97.0/24. Observe how many are reported to be open - I'm sure that's due to something TMNet is doing.

Please share if you know anything about this, whether it's an IDS or some other appliance.

In any case, they shouldn't be actively intercepting connections like this. There's no longer end-to-end transparency anymore.

<div class="spoilertop"
Speed test together

Hm AFAIK lowyat.net hasn't been contacted by anyone regarding this matter. Maybe because your mail to them doesn't mention our contact address - support@lowyat.net.

I think one of the problems on our end is that we don't have any organized way to say that "TMNet sucks". At the moment we just have scattered test results or anecdotes. TMNet on the other hand has their traffic graphs (for both network and call center) and can gauge as a whole their customer experience.

We can try to change that. Does anyone want to get together and design a way to organize ourselves? What I have in mind is something like speedtest.net, but more relevant to our local problems.

I'm tasked to evaluate video encoders and encoding parameters.

Does anyone know any web script or software that shows both videos side-by-side so that I can compare them? I'd have to write one if I can't find one :\

Stop paypal funds trading in LYN

Trading paypal is inherently unsafe. Once funds are sent, they can be reversed, at the recipient's expense. This, together with "no-shows", have caused several members to lose their money to conmen recently. The problem is compounded by the fact that nobody would "COD" for paypal.

We are considering stopping all paypal funds trading in LYN. Let's discuss:

1) If paypal funds trading were to continue, how do we ensure security for traders?
2) If paypal funds trading is to be removed, what alternatives are there for people who need to buy/sell paypal funds?

Abuse faced by the moderating team, all the time..

While the moderating team is sometimes accused for abusing the members, let's not forget that as the authority here we get abused ourselves. And often times undeservedly. This topic is dedicated to all those times where someone did something wrong but is defiant over it.

(note: moderators are invited to make an example of the abuse that they get)

Tip: If you're looking to migrate to ext4

I ran into a bug where I can reproducibly hang a ext4 filesystem by taking an LVM snapshot of it and then performing disk IO on them. I upgraded to 2.6.29-rc7 which has this patch and it's all good now.

There's other users reporting different ways this bug is showing up. Because of that, I strongly suggest you wait until 2.6.29 is released or a backport is made to your kernel before using ext4.

Database restoration

We suffered a major database crash this morning caused firstly by diskspace issues, and secondly a missing InnoDB journal.

Backups have been restored from the previous day, but any new data (posts and PMs) from 5AM 24th Feb are permanently gone.

We will be investigating further, and will implement measures to avoid this in the future. On behalf of the LYN team, I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

[addedon]February 25, 2009, 2:32 pm[/addedon]Oh, and the good news is that if you were banned yesterday, you would probably escape the ban

Has anyone tried this Apple wireless keyboard?

(the one at the bottom) Link here

I'm interested in it because of the narrow design since it doesn't have a numpad. Does anyone have any comments on its usability? Is it comfortable to type for long periods? Thanks.
