choise between two speaker

Recently i come across choice of two speaker i might interested to buy.

1. Sonus Faber Concertino Domus
2. ProAc Studio 110

any people who compared them or used them for a long time, pls do give me some suggestion, i needs answer for consider.
1. which speaker is harder to drive?
2. which speaker is more musical?
i don't want extreme bass respond, or treble. for me, i want vocal to be meaty, thick, warm, and detail.
i personally tested both at different shop, with different setup. and proac did impress me by the bass and treble, however, it's sound pressure level is high. and i just found myself can't relax listening to ProAc.
while sonus faber does give more depth, instrument were played nicely, wide, and relax.

my current amp will be NAD3020A (25 Watt continues). which i might upgrade to single ended tube amp after i got speaker.

what i need currently, is a speaker with wide sound stage, relaxing type of characteristic, thick in vocal, warm, and has detail (and some speed, not fast, but don't be slow either) so that i can listen the music, read books and sleep while the music are well define..
ProAc sounds good to me, but it really sounds like a grado to me. exciting sound. emphasis on dynamic making even most relaxing song also excited.... that's a negative point for me.

pls. i need those who had actual experience on the speaker to discuss. pls don't spam. and pls. no spec talk according to spec sheet provided by manufacturer.
thanks.

Headphone Driver Frequencies Distribution

ok
first at all, i was thinking, for normal driver. which looks like the picture above (SR80 driver) so we don't talk about other special geometry driver or weired shape diaphram driver like AKG K501,601,701, Beyer 880 990.

let say we set this as basic shape.
so Question that keep ringing in my mind is

Where does the Bass were mostly produce
and where does the Treble were mostly produce.

this is driver of KSC75. is that the bass were from middle, and higher frequencies are in outer rim?
reason : the middle parts move with much larger amplitude and "might be" slower speed/ frequencies. while the outer rim is fix on the shell /spider, so the movement at outer rim is faster and with smaller amplitude. with that. the bass is from middle, and the treble is from outer rim.
as the outer rim doesn't have sponge edge or rubber edge that same with speaker. so can we assume that the driver is flexible in certain level.

However, on my own experiment of KSC75. i try to drill more holes on outer rims of the driver's grill, i found out that BASS is gain. while TREBLE is less.
might have two situation here.
1. the bass is produced by the outer rim
2. the extra holes on grill reduce air pressure and let the driver move faster.

however, while i drill a big hole in the center of the grill. TREBLE were increase.
so is that means, the driver should produce sounds like this?

and below is pictures of Sennheiser HD580 and Sennheiser HD600.
from picture we can see that the sound reflection membrane were cut out in the middle. that is to let bass to pass through. or increase the clarity by allowing more treble to pass through?

Any pro who knows the answer, or suggestion, pls comes discuss here. or suggest me some material / homepages to read on.
Thanks a lot.

interesting headphone ultrasone

Today, Ultrasone, the "OTHER" German Headphone Manufacturer has announced to the world that they now make "The World's Best Headphone". Now with a monniker that high and mighty, they must have an ego that is just as "Grand".

Dubbed the Ultrasone "Edition 9's", the claim is that they are the new standard of high definition headphones. It seems that high definition is a word that has been sprinkled around quite liberally like salt, so forgive me for my skepticism. Apparently, my doubt is unfounded.

"In terms of sonic clarity & transparency, The Edition 9 headphones are unrivaled & stand alone on the summit of headphone perfection" according to Brian Metcalf, who is one of Ultrasones many evangelists. He goes on to express his fondness for sheep...skin... "While The Edition 9s very well might be the best headphones in the world, they are definitely the only headphones in the world that put Ethiopian sheeps leather in contact with your ears". In fact, Ultrasone spares no sheep by placing the buttery soft material not only on the ear pads, but also on the headband as well to ensure your place on the Animal Right's Hit List.

All sheep jokes aside, the Edition 9's do come with an impressive array of features that support their finest titanium plated drivers and black chrome earcups. The Edition 9's take full advantage of their technologies including S-Logic(tm) technology for a combination of natural surround technology and reduced sound pressure levels up to 40%. The headphones go a step further to protect your intellect by reducing electromagnetic emissions up to 98%: The same stuff that allegedly comes from a cell phone and fries your brain.

For the brain cell abundant, a few choice numbers for you to process:

*
Closed-back headphones
*
S-Logic(tm) Technology
*
PROline standard ULE by Mu Metal shielding
*
Dynamic principle
*
Frequency range 8Hz-35.000 kHz
*
40 mm Titanium-Mylar drivers
*
Impedance 30 ohm
*
SPL 96 dB
*
Nominal Headband pressure 5,2 N
*
Weight without cord 310 g
*
Cable 3 meter
*
6,3 mm gold plated plug
*
3,5mm adaptor

If you want to take a set out for a test spin, you better be spinning into the store with your Ferrari.
Sand Box Speaker Stand

After read some Sand Box pages.. i decided to make one small one for my satelite speaker to test out how it sound.

Material =
1. 2 X Plastic Food Storage Box ( 2 for RM 3.50)
2. 4 X Bounching Ball (RM 1 Each)
3. 4 X Package of Aquarium Sand ( RM 1.99 each)
4. 2 X Cutting Board ( RM 1.99 Each)
total RM 19.44

First i use the Bounching Ball as stand. Cut all the ball with knife (Heat up your knife first) and split each ball to half alone the line on the ball. after that i use Shoe Glue to gum it under the Food storage box.

After that, i fill up the plastic box with the aquarium sand.

Reason i choose aquarium sand is :
1. Hard to find sand around my place.
2. Lazy to wash sand and dry it.
3. Maybe dirty. and if the sand isn't fully dry. will growth fungus.
4. Aquarium sand is more beautiful.

Acousticly i not sure the different between normal sand VS aquarium sand.

Then i close it up with a cutting board which i cut according to the shape of the box.

And make sure theres gap between the cutting board VS the box. so the cutting board which support the speaker actually hold by sand, not the box. here i left the gap is 2mm.

Final look. test it on my altec lansing first. will try it on AEGO soon. wait the sand inside is firm, then i will place my AEGO on it.
(satelite)

For those who got free time, can try it out.

Fisrt impresion. it really make the sound "wide" and the emptyness while some song echo. this stand really make the echo sound quite well. and many song detail start to heard. while before using this stand is some how blured.
imaging of the sound very good. transparencies improved. and the satelites seems to intergrate with woofer better...
overall for under RM 20 stand, i am really really happy for it's performance. and after all i made it with my own hand.
got my ideal from here.
stand- sand box
Found that the screws of the D9 connector is too troublesome to screw it tight so i took our the thumb screw from the original EMU analog breakout cable and tried to replace it on PcWork's cable. No avail though coz it just won't fit.

Argh, never mind... just stick with the small screws then. And there it goes... i connect PcWork's cable to my 6.5mm to 3.5mm converter, and plugged in my headphones. Oh man... its really sucks! The bass was very muddy and the vocals were unclear. But then i never tried pairing this headphones with my EMU card as i don't have the proper breakout cable.

Next test is on my ATP3. First thing i notice... very obvious improvements! Bass is very tight and the vocals are clearer now. Moreover it manage to pick up a lot of details that i never heard before on those particular songs. I auditioned it in my room from 8pm to 11pm and still i was amaze with it

Thanks man! Really appreciate this cable! But then... still funding for AegoM

QUOTE(elhh82 @ Jul 13 2006, 10:45 AM)

Heres some feedback from me too, got my cables on Sunday, sorry posted these comments a bit late. I got the RCA - RCA cables with the canare plugs.

I met up with PcWork in Serdang on Sunday, and we had quite a long chat. You can see that this guy is really proud of his work, he kept telling me stories about the cable, and showing me parts of the cable. He took the cable back so many times to show me stuff, i thought he was going to change his mind and not sell me the cable..

Anyway, i've been listening to them for the past few days on my Silverstone EB-01 + Aego 2 setup, and i'm quite impressed. If you listen to jazz music i'm sure you'll love these cables. The acoustic instruments all sound much more pleasant and realistic compared to the standard aego 2 cables i was using before. Quite obvious improvements in terms of clarity and details.

QUOTE(PowerSlide @ Aug 22 2006, 10:44 AM)

listening now..1st thing notice is how smoother the bass is..b4 this its kinda boomy..will listen longer 1st to spot the changes..but 1 thing..ur cable has shame the stock emu

n the quality is really nice bro..u done a very evry good job

QUOTE(^XsLaYa^ @ , Aug 20 2006, 11:24 PM)

Harlo, haha yeah selling them off since i got yours already. No use keeping extra hahaha. So far so good your cable. Sound better every day, now still burning in. I also borrow the rca to rca to my fren to test. Waiting for his results.

QUOTE(scottiebaby @ Jun 12 2007, 10:07 PM)

hey brader,

juz wanted to update u on the SQ of your 6wire litz style cable. i've recently been given sporean diy headfier Qsilver's best quality Analoge Reference mini IC cable to try. after listening for a few days straight, i can honestly say.....i cannot hear any difference. i would say (for now) your cable is just as good! goodjob buddie!

QUOTE(scottiebabie @ Jun 13 2007, 08:30 PM)

I 've been using PCWORKs 6wire Litz Style IC cables for a few weeks now in replacement of the original PCWORK normal diy canare IC. However it only took me a few days of critical listening before I was able to discern small but noticeable sonic differences between PCdude's new 6wire litz and his old 4wire canare cables.

Before I come up with flowery and big money words to describe the sonic attributes of the new 6wire litz IC, I have to add the disclaimer that I was NOT a believer in the long held and just as controversial view that cables make a sonic difference. I always thought that given decent initial quality, a cable is a cable is a cable. Copper is copper is copper. How much more simple is that? I was proven wrong by my own ears. I could hear a difference!

Recent experiences in choosing capacitor values for my new Gmod modifications taught this old dog some tricks regarding the sonic effects capacitance has on sound. Also the recent acquisition of an ER4 p-s impedance adapter of 75ohms (again beautifully made by PCdude) have again shown me the sonic traits imparted by impedance. Based on these experiences, I can conclude that cable impedance and capacitance are the major culprits of "cable sound". It is my personal opinion that the best cables should have no sound signature. Transparency is the holy grail of cables (and indeed, of source too IMO). Their task is to carry the audio signal as pure and as unadulterated as possible from one end to the other.

So what does this have to do with cable sonic differences and this supposed review? Well, after only taking up audiophilia with any serious intentions for a relatively short time, I can honestly admit that I do not know how to review cables! I mean I can say the 6wire litz give more bass and that the treble seems livelier with unadulterated (boy I love this word for some reason) honesty but I interpret that as greater transparency and resolution. Instead of the 6wire litz "giving" more bass, it is my opinion that the positive sonic differences I hear is due to its greater resolution and transparency. The greater electrical conducting capacity of the 6wire litz carries a purer unadulterated audio signal. Period! And I heard it as greater bass, livelier treble and increased clarity and sparkle. That said, the differences I could discern (the Gmod helped greatly btw) are not of biblical or even monumental proportions. Though small it is discernable if one is listening with sufficient clarity of mind and concentration (and sobriety helps in my case).

Again recent experiences demo'ing our new Gmod showed me the differences in remarks, impressions and opinions from different people even though everyone's listening to the samething. The one thing that everyone concluded is the Gmod is much better than normal lineout. Other than that, its more bass, less bass, tighter bass, bigger slam, more treble extension, more forward mids, better vocals, wider soundstage, bigger stage, more depth, more details, better dynamics, greater PRaT, increased speed and quickness, greater clarity, better tonality, brighter, yadi yadi yada.......! Take your pick of phases and use it in your statement and it'll still ring true even though the next guy has a different set. To me they're all interpreting and describing what is IMO an increase in resolution and transparency.

So to conclude, the newer PCWORK 6wire litz cable (don't know which make as I didn't ask) is more transparent and resolved than the normal 4wire canare cable IMO. Not mind bendingly so but its significant enough for me. YMMV of'coz. O plus the fact the 6wire interweave is so cool.

But wait, there's part deux...

Last week I was fortunate enough to be handed a set of custom top-of-the-line Analogue Reference mini IC cable made by a well known s'pore headfier to audition. I've been listening to it from my Gmod 'pod to Tomahawk driving my modded iM716. For the longest time, I honestly cannot hear any differences as both are very very good (as least compared to my former canare IC) and sounded identical. And so I did my normal reviewing tactic of just using the AR only for the next few days till a few hours ago. And the result is.....(drumroll)......I still honestly (and unadulteratedly) cannot discern any significant difference! They are both that good.

Now since I've promised a review and reviews need conclusions, I've resorted to a mental exercise I'm well versed in esp.on cold and wet lonely nights. I'll pretend a gorgeous babe with serious booties flashing me some indecent cleavage and making goo goo eyes at me with promises of other "goodies" to come if and only if I stand up, be a man, stop the namby-pamby and make a decisive decision! In that moment of bloodlust insanity, I'll probably blurt out that the AR have a feline hair more bass with the accompanying warmth and the 6wire PCWORK Litz might have the slightest (again by a feline hair) upper end extension and clarity. So who's the winner here? Hmmm...I guess it would depend on whether I'm game for a fuller bottom or in the mood for some extended lungs at that very moment. Please take my prior statement with not only a pinch of salt but with the skepticism that it's the ramblings of a man push to the edge and made to choose by a PYT (Pretty Young Thing la, what else??). Its tantamount to critiquing Cindy Crawford's mole!

Whatever my ramblings, IMHO the real winner is us. We in this part of the world have dedicated DIY'ers that not only put in the requisite time and effort, they put in a lot of themselves and it shows in the quality of their workmanship and QC. I for one am supremely grateful I get to sample their wares even while not fully comprehending the amount of work and pride that goes into each IC. The word handcrafted shines like a beacon in this world of increasing automation. Whatever the price charged (and I'm absolutely positive its way wayyy cheaper than the ICs Americans and Europeans pay) I would not be begrudging their small profit for a lot of effort but I'd be afraid they may not have the free time available to custom make me an IC esp.in this increasingly hectic and stress filled rat-race we call modern society.

Disclaimer:
Ahhh...no, sad to admit but I'm NOT paid by either party for this review (hint:I'm doing this out of the goodness of my heart but more importantly, also in the hope I get sent more toyz to play with and inlieu of toyz, cash also works). As usual, this is only my humble opinion with my current gear. YMMV and despite my convincing argument, its the gray matter between your ears that holds the key.

QUOTE(scottiebabie @ Jun 14 2007, 02:22 AM)

i dont know the specifics in the science of cables and of braids. i can however tell ya that canare starquads are 4 twist wires so it is a kinda braid too. i think braiding is only to make the cables neat and tidy (and has major cool factor as a bonus) but the sonics should be the same regardless if all 6 wires are braided, tied up, twisted up or just hanging individually (perhaps someone more experienced in S&M can chime in here ).

that said, having multi core (6 in this case) in comparison with a single core must change the inductance/capacitance/impedance to some extend even if its just minute amounts. this might account for the fact that cables only make low percentage of differences in relation to all other factors. also do keep in mind that it doesnt take a whole lot to alter a signal to make an audible difference.

anyways my conclusions are garnered the old fashioned way - through good old critical listening. measurement are great and all but we all know that specs do not tell the whole story. even the cheapest dvd/cd players nowadays sport incredible specs esp. compare to old fashion tube stuff. IMO the strength of measurements are its accuracy but we dont measure everything and its impratical to do so. an audio signal comprising a song isnt just 1 particular measurement. infact its probably infinite in how many parameters that can be measured. perhaps its the unmeasured that makes the difference.

there are two comparos here really. the 1st is btwn PCdudes Litz againt a regular 4wire canare starquad. and in that instance i agree totally wit TEK. the Litz does give the impression of a fuller bottom as noted in the 1st part of my review. it is my opinion that as resolution increase, pratically all aspects of the sound improves. perhaps it our ears and our gear that limits us to just 1 particular aspect. Etymotics are famed for their accurate albeit analytical sound siggy and its also this trait that i so enjoy. it allows me take a much clearer sonic snapshot. theres no doubt in my mind that the Litz is more resolving than the basic starquad.

the 2nd comparo of the Litz with the Analogue Reference presents a far far tougher task. to me, its like asking which color lingerie does Cindy Crawford look better in?? perhaps someone else with better taste than mine can answer this. LOL! anywz, to me the Litz presents a clearer picture while the AR sports a warmer coat. but dont misunderstand me here guyz, im talking differences of perhaps 0.5-1% between the Litz and the AR (if any at all) while the difference btwn Litz/AR and normal starquad is perhaps 5%. IMHO of'coz

regardless this has been an interesting exercise for me and i thought i'd share it with my fellow headcases. im glad some of you's enjoyed it

overall look for my gadget, with DIY cable.
shorter one is canare cable, longer one custom made for HP890 is SATO cable (japan)
plugs are using some not so high end plug. as i cannot found 2.5mm plug that's really good. the small red things connected to my amp is Audiotrak Optoplay USB soundcard.

here's another picture with another amp.

Here's a closer look of my DIY hp890 cable.

Overall look for all my DIY cable.

Canare cable, bought from some forumers. very nice quality / finish tough. i can't found the canare f-12 plug at jalan pasar. any one can tell me where can i buy it? to be specific, the name / location of the shop will be great.

both short cable, around 7", used for connect players -> portable amp.
purple is canare cable, white is sato cable + sleeve.

[outtopic] : Koss ksc75 drive.

Kramel Mods : improve the high, but some how, i feel it's a little bit too bright. and bass feel less punchy now. how ever, i just tested it not over 2 hours.
will continue listen to it, and compare A/B with the one without mod.
glossary : kramel mods = drilling some extra holes at the plastic which cover the drive. so that to minimize the surface of the plastic. and allow more sound pass through.

PS : i bought several REAN 3.5mm plug at jalan pasar. but i cannot fit it in with canare cable. any audiophile can pls suggest me that what cable suitable to be put on the rean plug, and giving outstanding soundquality too? (the holes is slightly smaller than canare cable. i can't force it in) price won't be an issue as i won't really need long cable. probally i buy 1 meter only.and of course, cannot afford those 1 meter= RM 80 cable. =P budget around 1 meter = RM10-RM20, cable only.

sound quality : when paring with nice cable, sound stage of hp890 / koss ksc75 actually widen up.
how wide? i don't know how to describe.
overall : i am happy for
1. improvement of sound quality,
2. improvement of "outlook" . looks excited when see big big cable.
3. slightly more detail than normal cable.

and about canare L-4E6S cable + F-12 plug , according to Dinodog_jr, using his Sr60 (grado) on my amp. he claim that the bass and soundstage is improved for his SR60. and bass have quite noticeable different. how much different, ask him.

Poision part: Dinodog_JR. wanna come up and have a listen???? =P
