This is just getting silly, don't you think? The iPhone Dev Team has once again proven their totally gnarly talents by freeing up the latest firmware before it's even the latest firmware. Apple, here's our suggestion -- just let people do what they want with your devices, since they're clearly going to do it anyway. That way, instead of making enemies, you're making lifelong buddies. Reasonable, right? Steve, give us a call, we're more than happy to riff on some ideas for playing nice with the end-user.

Update: Dev chat room chatter claims that the 2.0 is now fully unlocked as well.

TSA can't believe MacBook Air is a real laptop

The TSA has been known to take issue with products designed in Cupertino before, but for one particular traveler, it was Apple's thinnest laptop ever that caused the latest holdup. Upon tossing his ultra-sleek slab of aluminum underneath the scanner, security managed to find enough peculiarities to remove it from the flow, pull it aside and wrangle up the owner for some questions. Apparently, the TSA employee manning the line was flabbergasted by the "lack of a drive" and the complete absence of "ports on the back," and while hordes of co-workers swarmed to investigate, the user's flight took off on schedule. Thankfully, said owner was finally allowed to pass through after some more in-the-know colleagues explained in painfully simple terms what an SSD was, but the poor jet-setter most definitely paid the price for trying to slip some of the latest and greatest under the sharp eyes of the TSA (and cutting it close on time, of course).

A new in box Apple //c system was recently sold on eBay. This is quite remarkable; a vintage computer-- twenty-three years old-- that has never been opened. The people who ultimately won the auction posted a beautiful set of unboxing pictures. For a brief moment, it was 1984 all over again.

On Thursday night, Kathryn and I unboxed my latest eBay acquisition: an Apple //c. There are many vintage Apple II computers available for auction, but this one is special: It's never been opened. Ever. It hasn't seen the light of day since before it was shipped on May 5th, 1988.

Apple Tablet PC

Another Apple rumor that just won't die -- the supposed development of a new Newton-esque tablet computer -- was injected with additional hype serum on Tuesday when an unnamed (yet reportedly reputable) source at ASUS told CNet that Apple is indeed in midst of developing this mythical tablet computer.

The Taiwan-based firm has reportedly been contracted to build the new device, which Cnet claims will be a completely new design rather than share roots with any existing ASUS model. While no further details were provided, speculation for now is that the tablet will feature a mobile-optimized version of OS X as well as a multi-touch display. The release date, while also unspecified, is rumored to be sometime next year.
