SoftAP -turn wireless usb dongle into access point

guys just wanna share this with u because today i felt kinda "cheated"...info below

i've always wanted to own a wireless usb adapter/dongle which can also act as an access point, after seeing the availability of such devices years ago, for example something like this
http://www.lelong.com.my/Auc/List/2008-11DSale21743283.htm.
another reason for the need is because i never ever got ad-hoc networking to work.

today i was in lowyat and saw this wireless usb adapter Planex GW-US54Mini2G, which on its product box has the description "Support Software AP". The product is packaged in a box similar to the dvd box that come with 3g usb modems. I thought that since the product is packaged differently than those normal dongles that come in cardboard boxes, this product must be quite special.

so i bought it for rm69. went home opened the box to find the cd and installed the windows driver software. i was curious about its mentioned support for linux so i browsed the cd for the linux driver. found it strange that the linux driver files are of the Ralink rt73 chipset!

i tested the AP mode and it was indeed working. Now, i also have a Tenda brand wireless usb that is also of rt73 chipset, plugged it in and it was working as well! so now confirmed the rm69 Planex is no diferent internally than the rm40 Tenda! Just need the configuration software that support SOftAP. i googled and found an old and discontinued SOftAP software project for Ralink wireless adapters..i have feeling that this Planex simply ripped that software.

so, just want to inform u all that u can currently get the AP-capable Tenda dongle for rm40 at SriComp/PCzone (currently also the cheapest wireless dongle in lowyat), just need to find the SoftAP softare (think the software download link in wikipedia looks legit).

hope u guys find this useful.

Exorbitantly expensive places to eat

Hi Folks,

Today it was raining like it never rained before and my friend and I were frantically searching for a place where we could dine safely from the elements of nature. my friend suggested that we head towards Giant's in PJ but detoured to an outlet that looked seemingly interesting. Also, that placed had an ample amount of parking space which was conveniently right in fornt of the shop.

The place serves nasi padang as you will never miss it as it is located in the same row with the one and only Subway outlet in Kelana Jaya. Hungry as ever, my friend ordered away at the dishes like that was no tomorrow. We ended up with 6 dishes that comprised of small portions of the following:

1. sambal petai udang
2. 2 pieces of patheticly fried chicken (looks like their suppliers have been starving the chickens)
3. 2 plates of miserably mixed vegetables.
4. 1 plate of lousy tapioca fritters.
5. 2 glasses of mango juice.
6. 1 measly piece of mashed potato that is fried in batter.

Note: The 'plates' are as 'huge' as a teacup saucer!!!

Anyhow... we dined away not realising what awaits us... The bill, to our surprise... was a whopping RM 45.10... we do not understand how simple household dishes (that were not exceptionally tasty to begin with) could come up to such EXORBITANT prices.

Let this be a warning to all you poor blokes out there... stay AWAY from this place. This is a community service reminder to the public and we hope that everyone can share similar experiences that they had undergone so that others will not fall prey to such unscrupulous methods to make a quick buck.

P.S: Now we understood why the shop looked empty... It ain't the rain we could say for sure that's causing the emptiness.

My equipment are Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 wifi router(support 125mbps) and Aztech 125mbps wifi dongle.

The problem is i cannot get the usb dongle to connect at 125mbps...it always connect at 54mbps.

It's not the access point problem (i think)..bcos i have turn on afterburner and frameburst on the DD-WRT firmware.

I've read on wikipedia that the 125mbps mode is interoperable, but on the Aztech dongle box packaging it seems to say it will only work with Aztech router.

Anyone can advise?
for example, if i ping direct to pc/router
#ping -t 192.168.1.6
#ping -t 192.168.1.1
it will get replies,
but when i do a broadcast ping
#ping 192.168.1.255
it won't get any replies

what could be the problem?

can OpenVPN connection be blocked?

i'm asking this because my office currently blocks/doesnt allow pptp connections. so i plan to use a openvpn(SSL) network, but concern that it will also be blocked. my company i think like uses the top of the range cisco equipment. i plan to setup the openvpn server on port 21. if openvpn works, i plan to flash my home router to dd-wrt firmware that supports it. Any opinions?

playing at cybercafe vs online

i just played at a cybercafe last week...and i got this to say

owning a public server in cybercafe means nothing...because

1.those players at CCs are casual players...wait till u beat others in the comfort of their home and equipment
2.u probably bring your own mouse and headset to CC(i've seen ppl do that..really amazing and sad)
3.u probably cant control recoil with higher ping online
4.casual players lack intelligence and aim, thats why awp is so powerful in CC
5.everyone camping/baiting/afraid to die when startmoney not 16000
