[share] Thinking about how TMNut throttle P2P
Well, today is 1st Feb, the first day of the month.
When people of Selangor & KL enjoying public holiday, P2Pers enjoy the "Speed is Back"...
But, do you wonder why it just happen suddenly? For no reason? Or because of 99% international link restored?

Well, well, well. Being a system/network administrator, who also implement some kind of P2P throttlering in my office, I think I should share a bit information to forumers.

I will use the setup in my office's firewall as example. It doesn't mean the same way how TMNut's Screamyx system works.

1. We have limited bandwidth, 1.5Mbps for Internet.
2. Without throttlering, P2P traffic will definitely eat up all traffic and cause others service, eg. Email, Web, DNS very very slow.

I split 1.5Mbps into 2 pools, A is 1Mbps, B is 0.5Mbps.
Pool A is for normal usage, typically Email, Web, DNS, VPN.. etc.
Pool B is for low priority usage, anything which is not belongs to Pool A.
However, bandwith for Pool A is strictly protected, which means even it is not fully utilize, it can not lend the bandwith to Pool B. However, Pool B is open, which mean if Pool A is 100% utilize, Pool A can borrow bandwith from Pool B.

So, think about it, if 10 people using P2P at the same time, you will only get 500Kbps / 10 = 50Kbps ~ 6KB/s. The more people using P2P, the less average speed for each. And some more, bandwith will be borrowed to higher priority usage in Pool A.

So, do I need to monitoring all the time?
No, once setup, it runs all the way. Only occasionally tweak a bit in Pool A to allow new services.

Well, how about Screamyx?

I suspect they have multiple pools for different segment (by network class? by area? by DSLAM...?) So, if you are in the pool that not so many people downloading using P2P, you are getting higher speed, but from time to time.

Remember? Today is 1st of Feb, a new beginning of the month.
So, don't joy too fast. What if Screamyx implement the 'quota' method for each user, e.g you have 50GB per month. Today is just a new accounting day, that's why you still have a long way to reach your limit. Once you reach, sorry, you're throttled again.
The Quota Limitation is my assumption only. If this is really true, it can be various type of setting. e.g Daily base, Monthly base, or even Daily+Monthly base.

So, guys, don't celebrate too fast, don't run too fast. Keep monitoring until end of this month.

Sorry for my lousy english...

Note: I'm using Linux Kernel 2.2 + ipchains + CBQ
Not easy to setup due to the limitation of Kernel 2.2 and IPChains.
Will install a new Linux later to use iptables + l7-filter.
