Server Migration to AIMS and Connectivity Issues

As most of you might have noticed, we recently migrated our servers out of Jaring to the AIMS datacenter. There were two primary reasons why we made the option to move.

1. Jaring's new revised prices meant we had to pay about 300% more compared to what we were previously paying. With a peak bandwidth utilization hitting about 25MB/s, that was a huge increase in costs.

2. AIMS sells bandwidth that is connected directly to the Malaysian Internet Exchange. By selling local and international bandwidth separately, we are able to get more bandwidth at a lower cost. Its still an increase in costs, but not as much as if we remained in Jaring.

The migration also takes into account our future plans to provide streaming locally produced videos and media content via Lowyat.TV. By having the option to purchase local bandwidth for a cheaper cost, we should be able to roll out more media intensive content over the next few months.

The migration however isn't without problems. At the moment, there seems to be some minor connectivity and routing problems between the datacenter and some of the major ISP's. We are aware those on Maxis broadband connection are experiencing lag to the site due to routing issues, and TMnet users have experienced intermittent breakdowns from time to time.

Rest assured that we are working with the service providers and the datacenter to fix the issues as soon as possible.

Temporary downtime at Jaring

Our service provider at Jaring experienced a temporary outage of service earlier today. Most of the connectivity issues were rectified by around 11pm. There are still some minor packet loss issues that we hope will be ironed out by the time the early morning traffic comes in.

No bunnies were hurt during the service restoration process.

Our service provider experienced a loss of network connection earlier today during a planned uplink upgrade exercise.

The faults have since been rectified and order is now officially restored to the LYN Universe.

Kopitiam Cleanup Operation

We were hoping they would grow up, but that seems to be wishful thinking now.

For the next week, and until a time when we believe order has been restored, moderators have been instructed to suspend on sight any member found trolling, creating unnecessary flame threads and using profanities (short form and creative spelling included) anywhere across the board - especially the Kopitiam sections.

We do allow for the occasional random postings, even unnecessary spam in the kopitiam, but please do not abuse it to the point that it interferes with the topic being discussed. Treat your fellow members with respect, and post constructively.

Server Upgrade Notice [update]

We will be upgrading our database server this Thursday (6th September 07). We expect this exercise to take anywhere between 2 to 5 hours.

The forums will be taken offline from 1030pm to 12am (and probably be inaccessible up till 5am depending on any complications that might happen during the transfer).

The new database server should be able to cope with the peak hour load that has been causing the recent increase in "server busy" messages.

Sorry guys, meant to put this up earlier but had some problems with the Internet connection at home.

The pickup details at Pasar Seni LRT tomorrow are as below.

Time : 10 am to 7pm, Monday to Friday
Location : Pasar Seni LRT (preferably at the Maybank building across the road)

Contact Number : 03 20702452 (just call and tell you're coming to pick up the t-shirts. they have already been informed)

There will be two crew members handling the calls up to 7pm and meeting up with you to pass you the t-shirts.

Each piece is RM25, so it would be great if you guys could bring exact change.

If possible, please inform them the number of t-shirts you need and sizes you require.

Price is fixed at RM25 a piece. (in case you didn't read the topic)

Where to get yours.

1. The t-shirts will go be available at the WCG Finals, Hall 2 & 3, Mid Valley Exhibition Centre Date: 8 & 9 September 2007

2. There will be pick up dates at Plaza Lowyat which we will announce later (subject to availability of crew)

3. Pick up at Pasar Seni LRT Station - Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm (3rd september onwards)

Sizes availability are as follows.

Male - M (~18.5"), L (~20"), XL (~21") and XXL (~22")
Female (baby-t) - S (~11"), M (~12")
*measurements is taken from the width of the t-shirt.

Do take note that the sizes are quite big, so pick the smaller of the two options.

Stock is limited, and priority is for self collection at the above pickup points. We'll release details for postage later, but we recommend you get a few friends to order in bulk to save on delivery charges.

LYN T-Shirt Design Competition Winners!

Just to recap, since this competition was run back in March (sorry for the long delays - been a bit tied up with my day job)

We ran a t-shirt design competition back in March (refer here)

We received close to 200 entries (and 30 entry rosak), and had a tough time narrowing down the final 10.

We finally did, and voting for the best design that would be sent to print commenced on 30th May 07. ( refer here)

The eventual winner was MOHD HAZIQ BIN ISHAK with this design. Congratulations dude!

Mohd Haziq's design wins him a slightly new (we opened it up for a 2 day review) Samsung Z560 HSPDA phone.

Well, one happy winner, and we've got our new "official" LYN t-shirt ready for printing.

While we did mention on the opening day of the contest that there would be only one winner, we felt that there wasn't much fun in just having one winner.

So, we went out and found our nice friends over at GIGABYTE to see if they could help us out. And help us out they did. Our sincere gratitude goes out to Mr Anson Chen, Marketing Manager for GIGABYTE Malaysia for chipping in not one but two Gigabyte GeForce Graphic cards for the winners!

And the lucky winners are Andrew who wins himself a GIGABYTE GeForce 7900GT and Chia Sheng Ching who wins himself a GIGABYTE GeForce 7600GT.

Once again, a huge thank you to Mr Anson Chen from GIGABYTE.

There were plans to have an official prize giving ceremony with balloons and confetti, but we then realized that all our three winners are from out of town, namely Pahang, Penang and Melaka. Getting them here was one thing, getting them here all at the same time was even more complicated, so we decided to just mail them the prizes and make them snap pictures of themselves!

Sales threads outside the tradezone

We have noticed an increased tendency for sales threads to be posted outside the tradezone. While some might be 'accidental', we have reason to believe some of these threads are deliberately posted at specific discussion sections.

Effective immediately, any type of sales threads or posts outside the tradezone will be deleted (not moved). Please report in any sales threads/posts you find outside the tradezone and moderators will take the necessary action that might include warnings to repeat offenders.

OK guys, we've been sidetracked a bit, but the goal is still the same. We've scouted around some of the known orphanages in and around KL, but haven't been able to come up with any conclusive locations for our first project.

So, if you know any orphanages, particularly in the KL area (or within driving distance of KL), please list them down here, preferably with contact number and address. It would be great if you know the person in charge, or what kind of help they need so that we could select and plan ahead.

We've implemented a minor modification change to the forums. All topics created 'today' (12am onwards) will be marked in ~~RED~~ GREEN. This should facilitate browsing for new topics especially in high traffic areas like the Kopitiam and Tradezone without having to filter threads by new topics.

Kindly be informed that this is an open forum that caters to all, inclusive of some young internet savvy kids, and your postings are exposing them to unwanted and unnecessary topics. While general discussion on this topic (handled properly and on a strictly educational basis) is still allowed, explicit details and random one line sexual talk is strictly prohibited.

The mods have been instructed to hand out 7 days suspensions to any member caught doing so.

Reminder : Gaining post count by spamming

We have noticed a sudden influx of members who register new accounts and within a few months accumulate post count amounting to a few thousand. Most of these posters spam the post-count enabled forum with one line replies that have no constructive nature other then to increment their post count. We know who you are and are watching you.

If you're caught illegally trying to accumulate your post count, we will not hesitate to slap you with a warning, and also reset your post count to 0. Please keep your spamming and one line replies to the kopitiam and other similar sections.

Server Busy Issue

We do realize that the server is getting overloaded and giving out a busy message during peak hours. This is due to a combination of increased traffic as well as our attempts to not remove postings on certain forums that has made the db quite fat - literally.

Rest assured we're in the midst of getting some much needed upgraded to address the issue. Please bear with us while we await the arrival of additional processing power
