Is Core i7 the right choice?

quoting myself, from SXPS16 thread:

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2009, 02:01 AM)

it's really very hard to say...

basically u re comparing high clock dual core against a low clock quad core with HT...

the uncertainty here is optimization... it all depends on how the games are optimized for quad core, turbo boost and HT...

u'll ve better performance with Core i7 in Resident Evil 5, but comes to Left 4 Dead, u probably won't see any difference... at GTA4, HT will even drag the performance instead, even though quad core is preferred...

moreover, i dun think game developers would spend resources on optimizing for HT, since only Core i7 and low-lvl Core i5 have it... others like Pentium in the entry market, Core i3 in the mainstream market and AMD dun ve such thing...
[right][snapback]29164578[/snapback][/right]

Studio 15 thread:

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 11 2009, 05:49 PM)

the key pt abt Core i7 is optimization...

Resident Evil 5, i7 will win anytime, due to optimization for HT...

GTA4, C2Q probably will be better, since it's not optimized for HT, in fact HT will even drag the performance...

L4D, a C2D is more than enuf...

[addedon]October 11, 2009, 2:50 pm[/addedon]anyway, i7 with HD4570... it's totally imbalance...
[right][snapback]29173783[/snapback][/right]

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 12 2009, 12:02 PM)

yes, i7 is a quaddie, but the problem lies in HT... it's a double edged sword...

the keyword here is optimization... if the software is optimized for HT, u'll have up to 30% performance boost (as Intel claims), but if the application is not optimized, then u'll see performance loss instead...

as far as games are concerned, HT is not a useful, if not totally bad, feature to have... that's the main reason y desktop Core i7 didn't really pick up when it was launched last year...

if u re talking abt balancing, in fact GTX 280M SLI and HD4870 CF are probably piece of cake for it... and to quote Intel again, Core i7 was not designed for gamers...
[right][snapback]29188504[/snapback][/right]

and Alienware thread

QUOTE(astria @ Oct 12 2009, 09:30 AM)

if u get i7 now, chances are u'll probably disable HT so that u can get more performance from it for games, but that totally defeats the purpose of getting i7, since HT is wat separates i7 from i5 (assuming quaddie without HT)... so u'll be paying for sth which u dun use...

moreover, the speed difference a mobile Core i7 and mobile Core 2 Quad is not as great as that between desktop Core i7 and desktop Core 2 Quad (in fact Core i7 800 iirc runs at around 3GHz, same lvl as Core 2 Quad Q9050, desktop models for both), so for now, u're probably better off with Core 2 Quad...

remember, Intel have already said clearly last year that Core i7 is not designed for gamers... rather it's for servers and workstations...
[right][snapback]29187666[/snapback][/right]

After Intel Developer Forum Fall 2009, some laptop makers have followed Intel's roadmap and introduced Clarksdale in their product lines, notably Dell and Sager...

I have noticed in the forum lately that many people are undecided betwen a future resistant Core i7 setup (READ: NOT future proof) or much cheaper Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad combo... there is no definite answer... rather, it all depends on wat u re using the laptop for...

a slight search in google would reveal tonnes of reviews on the desktop Core i7 and how they stack against Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo, and it's easy to realize that Hyper Threading Technology is not games friendly at all... yes, Resident Evil 5 is the exception, but have u wondered why Intel only ran the RE5 demo during IDF and not other titles as well???

and of course, HT is not the only new feature... but heck, AMD has been using integrated memory controller for 7 or 8yrs already...

the real benefit of Core i7, imho, will be the new mobo design it brings about... the new PM55 chipset, like it's desktop counterpart, is a single chip design with no Northbridge at all... this makes the mobo size to shrink compared to the older PM45 and thus, better cooling and ventilation, or more space for other hardware like GPU...

imho, for those who are looking for a laptop to play games, Core i7 is not the one for u... but if u re looking for a setup for works like video editing, graphic rendering, programmers, etc... Core i7 is the perfect choice...

Got this assignment which needs me to code in multiple files...

basically, this is wat it asks for...

1) Codes in 3 files - Supermarket.cpp, Supermarket.h and Main.cpp
2) a "Supermarket" class, which reads from a file regarding stocks, and interacts with "Customer" class
3) an "Item" class, which mainly describes items read from a file
4) a "Customer" class, which reads from a file with detail of purchase

so now the problem is, I dunno which should go to which... the whole program dun require any input from the user, it's juz file reading all the way...

Acer to stick with DDR2 for some laptops

Notebookcheck, 31 July, 2009

QUOTE

According to a report published by Digitimes, Acer has decided to stick with DDR2 memory modules for part of its notebook lineup, including ultra-thin models, instead of DDR3 RAM because supplies of DDR3 memory modules have increasingly become tight. Acer earlier claimed that it would use DDR3 memory modules for all the notebooks in the future but it seems that Acer can not live up to this statement for the time-being. Almost half of Acer’s notebook lineup features DDR3 RAM.

Acer had also planned to adopt DDR3 memory for all of its ultra-thin notebooks, but the new strategy has affected its recently launched 11.6-inch Aspire 1410 ultra-thin notebook which adopts DDR2 RAM instead. This will definitely have an effect on the penetration of DDR3 memory modules in the market but, analysts believe that this effect will be short-lived because in 2010 Intel will launch the Calpella platform which uses DDR3 RAM.

Moreover, the price of DDR3 RAM is about 50-60% higher than that DDR2 RAM and it is expected that these prices will further shoot up as demand increases and supply reduces. The only one who seems to benefit from all this is the manufacturers of DDR2 memory modules.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Newsentry.153...60c69e49.0.html

Intel's Atom 'Pineview' coming to netbooks in Oct?

I am surprised no one mentioned abt this...

From Engadget, 10 Jun 2009

QUOTE

Get ready to say goodbye to the N270 processor and 945GSE graphics team slow-dancing with your netbook right now, Intel's single-core Atom N450 "Pineview" processor is rumored for a possible October release, at the earliest. The Atom N450 is part of Intel's "Pine Trail" platform architecture that moves the GPU and memory controller onto the CPU die for a smaller package that consumes less power (or the same if Intel jacks the clock speed) when coupled with intel's NM10 "Tigerpoint" chipset. Expect to see Atom N450-based netbooks elbowing for space against Snapdragon- and Tegra-flavored smartbooks everywhere by the end of the year.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/intels-...oks-in-october/

so yeah, i am holding back my possible netbook purchase...

and to double confirm it...

Techspot, 30 July 2009

QUOTE

For the past few days we’ve been hearing rumors from multiple sources about a Pine Trail launch delay. Originally scheduled for a Q4 release, Intel had supposedly pushed the release of its new Atom platform until early 2010 so that netbook vendors can clear out old inventory. While it wouldn’t be the first time the company altered its plans to appease its partners and accommodate to market conditions, speaking at the Intel Technology Summit in San Francisco yesterday, Intel’s Mooly Eden refuted the claims.

The general manager of Intel’s mobile group said “Pine Trail is on schedule” for release later this year. Eden kept somewhat coy about exactly when the platform would be released, but said that Intel may show some prototype Pine Trail-M netbooks at the Intel Developer Forum in September. Working Pine Trail netbooks were also shown off during Computex in June and previous rumors have pointed at a launch in October 2009.

For those not up to speed on Intel’s netbook plans, Pine Trail will include a new system-on-a-chip containing an Atom microprocessor core, memory controller, and graphics core. The SoC will sit alongside a separate Tiger Point chipset for I/O operations, in a two-chip design that should result in a cheaper platform and lower power consumption.

http://www.techspot.com/news/35647-intel-d...atom-delay.html

QUOTE

New Apple Tablet harkens back to memories of the Newton

Speculation has been high that Apple may be developing a tablet device and that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs himself may be handling the design. Now, according to a report from Apple Insider, those reports have been confirmed and a solid release date has been scheduled for the new device, which harkens back to memories of Apple's much beloved Newton PDA.

Apple Insider cites sources close to Apple as saying that the tablet has been added to Apple's internal roadmap by Mr. Jobs and that a Q1 2010 release is planned. The new tablet will measure approximately 10 inches and will feature 3G connectivity.

The product has been in the works since September of 2007, but reportedly never received the official go-ahead, instead being reset and re-envisioned several times. The device is expected to retail for somewhere between the high end iPhone's price and the intro price for a MacBook -- with a likely price point seemingly being $799.

People familiar with the device say Apple is in active talks over a contract with Verizon Wireless to provide wireless services for the device. The tablet will likely use system-on-a-chip processors designed by Apple itself, with the help of its acquired assets from defunct P.A. Semiconductor.

Apple had explored using Atom processors with the device and the iPhone, but it reportedly was unhappy with their power consumption, so it designed its own ARM-based processors, which are found in the iPhone currently. The move led to Intel vice president of mobility Shane Wall and Pankaj Kedia, the chipmaker's ultra-mobility ecosystems director attacking Apple during a trade show. Intel's senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher hurriedly issued a correction to his junior executive’s comments.

The new tablet may lure buyers looking for the form factor and battery life of a netbook, but are willing to spend a bit more than the average netbook in exchange for greater functionality. While it may in essence be a premium netbook of sorts, Apple insists on not billing it as such.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs once famously dismissed the netbook market commenting, "We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk."

http://www.dailytech.com/10+Apple+Tablet+R...rticle15785.htm

anyone interested???

How good is *insert graphic card name here*?

Decided to have such a thread after seeing so many questions of the following floating in the forum for the past 2 weeks...

"How good is XXX???"
"Can I play games with XXX?"
"How does XXX stack against YYY?"

Basically, this thread is all about contribution from you... Yes, you... I have answered many questions of those nature, and frankly, I am getting tired of answering them again and again.

If you have a laptop, be it old or new, integrated or dedicated, SLI or CrossFire, I hope to gather benchmark data from you guys, and list them down in this thread.

Basically, I need the model name of the laptop, the CPU it uses, amount of RAM, and the GPU used, preferably the type of VRAM as well, driver version, and OS used.

3D Mark 06 Basic Edition will be my main target (since it's free to use). I need the screenshot of the breakdown of the score (SM2.0, SM3.0, CPU and Overall), the resolution used, together with CPU-Z and GPU-Z.

Game benchmarks are welcomed also, please state the graphic detail (the level of detail as defined by the game, such as default Low, default Medium...) and resolution as well... For games without built-in benchmark system, a rough estimation of the FPS would be nice too.

Whatever you guys contribute, I will list them down in the second post

Please post in the following format:

CODE

Laptop Model | CPU model | Amount of RAM | GPU model and VRAM | Driver version | OS name | 3D Mark Resolution
*screenshot of 3D Mark 06, CPU-Z and GPU-Z*

Game name | Graphic Settings | Resolution | Result
*screenshot of game with result*

Please note that I take the policy of "No screenshot, No listing"... It's all about proving how capable your graphic card is.

Hope to hear from you guys... Cheers

Links to softwares:

3D Mark 06 Build 1.1.0 Basic Edition - FutureMark
CPU-Z - CPUID
GPU-Z - TechPowerup

The PowerColor Radeon HD 4770 AGP card come clocked just the same as the PCI-E variant with a 750MHz core clock and 3200MHz on the GDDR5.

As the 4770 doesn't support native AGP, PowerColor has integrated a special bridge chip that allows for the use of AGP. This might cause some compatibility issues but they should be few and far between. While PowerColor doesn't seem to have any information on their website about the card, it can be found on Amazon for $99.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/12151/powerc...card/index.html

approx.
i ve a rig as follows:

Phenom II x3 720BE
Biostar TA790GX XE (790GX + SB750)
Kingston KVR DDR2 800MHz 1GB x4
Win XP Pro SP3

previously i was using Athlon x2 5200+ Brisbane, and i had no problem with the integrated graphic

recently i upgraded to a Phenom II, and whenever i use the SidePort memory only, the rig would get stuck after the XP loading screen with the sweeping bar (ie never get into the login page)... using UMA only or UMA + SidePort is fine...

further investigation reveal that the driver is the culprit... i ve tried Catalyst 9.1 to 9.3, but all yield the same result... when i was using Athlon x2, i ve gone thru from Catalyst 8.11 to 9.2, and never had any problem...

i ve tried reinstalling windows but it's still the same...

the following is a screen shot:
[attachmentid=874195]

well, it's not really a big problem, since i am not going to game on this rig till i get a Radeon HD 4700... but still, it's a problem rit? hope someone can help me with this...

thx in advance...
