Computer crashes when playing DVD

Recently, my dad would want to watch DVD on his PC. However, the system crashes the moment the program (PowerDVD, Windows Media Player) starts running. Initially I suspected due to software (OS maybe?) issue so I decided to do a fresh install of XP. However it is still happening.

The drive seems to be working ok as I'm able to reinstall XP using that specific drive.

Any hints on how should I troubleshoot this matter further?

What graphics card is suitable for a HTPC?

Hi,

I'm currently using one of my older rigs to act as a HTPC. That PC is currently running on inbuilt graphics card and only has 1 VGA out. So I would like to purchase a dedicated graphics card to have DVI (or HDMI) out to my LCD TV and another output to my LCD monitor. So I would like to have some suggestions on which GC are the favourites for a HTPC nowadays? Preferable something that consumes low power. Budget maybe 100-200? Or do I need to fork a little more out? Or are those graphic cards at that price range are simply the same?

My PC is a dual core and is capable of rendering 1080p movies through coreavc, so those hardware acceleration isn't necessary.

Display color washed out on full screen.

Hi all,

Having this problem here with my display. I'm using a Samsung 2233SW with 4850GS. What I'm experiencing is the black bars looks very washed out when watching in fullscreen. (Actually the entire video looks washed out.). I didn't notice this problem with my old LCD which was using VGA. This new LCD I recently bought is using DVI though. Anyone has experience with this?

Regards,

White lines in COD World at War

Hi,

I'm currently having these white lines appearing at certain angle in COD World at War. How it looks like is below.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I'm using CCC 8.11, and I was told that it might be issues with the AA. I tried disabling AA and still happens. Any other 4850 owners having similiar problems? It happens even when I'm using the default graphics settings.

Onboard audio versus 3rd party audio

Hi,

I'm currently using a Gigabyte motherboard that comes with an ALC888. After using it for sometime, I noticed there's random spike "noise" when playing games at times. I have an old Audigy 2 ZS lying around, which I have used it for gaming with my older rig and didn't notice such spike "noise" before. Wonder is it because of the Audigy 2 ZS having own sound processor? Should I use the Audigy 2 ZS instead of the onboard? Oh, happens with MP3 when I'm playing online games. I recalled I didn't have such problem with my older rig P4 3GHz with the Audigy 2 ZS though, so it could not have been the processor choking right?

Creative's Vista support for the Audigy 2 ZS is pretty crap that is why I didn't switch to it. Or anyone could recommend me another 3rd party sound card? Interested in one of those OEM Xtreme Gamer sold by forummers here, but then it didn't have a port to connect the front jack like ALC888 does. Budget is roughly 200-300 if I were to get a soundcard. Else I'll just revert back to XP to use the Audigy 2 ZS .

[WTA] Sensor problem?

Hi all,

I'm using Gigabyte EP43-DS3 and Huntkey VPower 550W.

Having a few problems which I would like to clarify,

First of all, I noticed that monitoring programs such as Speedfan and HWmonitors reports my +12v wrongly. However Easytune6 (software provided by motherboard) read it correctly.

Speedfan

HWmonitor

Easytune 6

Secondly, the sensor seems to go haywire at times.

Very high temperature (100+) or very low temperature (subzero).

Could these be sensor related? Or software related?

Thanks a lot.

ps. Wondering if anyone with similiar motherboard as me could detect the 12v from monitoring softwares such as SpeedFan? Everest just shows it at 11.9V all the time.

Power Supply Unit

Hi all,

I just assembled my PC on Wednesday. I'm having a problem whereby my PSU makes a pitch noise when I load my GC. As in using ATITool, ATi tray tool or furmark or games (Crysis, or games that I didn't enable vsync) that can stress the GPU to 99~100%. Sound definately comes from PSU as I removed the PSU to put it outside the case and still coming from the PSU.

Below are my specs

PSU : Huntkey VPower 550w
GC : Gainward 4850 Golden Sample
Processor : E8400 @ stock
Mobo : GA-EP43-DS3
RAM : 2GB DDR2-800 @ stock
HDD : WD 640GB 16mb
Optical : LG 20 sata dvd burner

I searched around and found people having problems similiar to mine. Here's a video taken by someone else on how the sound roughly sounds like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSrf9Jh_8fk

Case of someone using a 700w PSU running 9800GX2 experiencing something similiar

http://forum.coolermaster.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&p=84132

I noticed it happens only when the GC is fully loaded, PSU not delivering enough power? Faulty PSU? or maybe it is the other parts? 550W should be more than enough right? Label says min 70% efficiency at load meaning 385W at max. My computer specs wouldn't go pass that yet isn't it? I did try and downclock my GC from 700 to 500 and the sound still persist .

Need help and advise from sifu here
