GREETINGS!!!

just thought id share something...a simple mod... doesnt take long to do...but gets rid of the annoyance for as long as ur using the same mobo...

im sure everyone hates having to unplug the front panel headers... because when u wanna plug them back in, u have to refer to the damn manual as to which plug goes where imho this is the most annoying part when installing a mobo.

those who remove the mobo alot from the case to change hsf, to change watever else would surely know what kind of pain it is... heck, for me...i get so lazy to remove the mobo coz of the front panel headers...make my casing's removable mobo tray pretty useless....

now.. my favourite mobo brand, Asus , has managed to "solve" this problem with their boards. they are thoughtful enough to provide terminal blocks that they named "Q-Connector". and believe me, these things are a life saver! im sooooooooo thankful to Asus for providing it. they saved my life during a period where i was having problems with my gaming rig and had to constantly remove the mobo from the case (my A10 case has a removable mobo tray)

u can actually DIY these Q-Connectors. all you need is to get a terminal block and the necessary pins for it. parts should be available in jalan pasar... i plan on doing these terminal blocks thing...coz at least with more "universal" block u can probably use it for any mobo u might have in the future. only thing is...i dont have the time to go hunt them down as yet.

and if ur wondering why i didnt get an asus board for the Q-Connector...well i did..my main rig is on an Asus board. but this is for my HTPC which is using a gigabyte board. why gigabyte? coz the the whole of friggin LYP didnt have the Asus board i wanted for my HTPC!!!

WHY ARENT OTHER MANUFATURERS PROVIDING THE SAME THING??? THEY SHOULD! FRIGGIN ANNOYING MAN!!! SHEESH!

anyway, i wanted to add a PCI card to the mobo, so i had to remove the mobo from the case since its an SFF... figured i might as well do the mod. ive had it in my head for a long time just didnt get around to doing it. so now i have a chance i did.

this mod may or may not work for u.....depending on ur mobo's pin layout. my gigabyte mobo has the layout where all the pins are in 1 place so it becomes like a whole block. makes life easier for the mod. for those whose pins are scattered....u can DIY the Q-Connector with a terminal block.. or u can do this for each block u might have.

i DONT recommend gluing them together, in case u change mobo. at least this one u can undo it and redo again for the next mobo.

enough of the long story... now the mod...

stuffs needed
1/ Small cable ties
2/ Heatshrink of the appropriate size
3/ Heat Source to heat the heatshrink
4/ Cutting materials to cut the heatshrink to size, trim cable tie, etc etc

so now lets get on with the mod...step by step.... (ooh babyyyyyyyyyy )

STEP 1

while the connectors are still in the mobo, use a cable tie and tie them TIGHT. this is to make sure when u remove them from the mobo for the next step of the mod the cables and the plugs dont go all over the place.

u can end the mod here if ur truly truly truly TRULY lazy... but since its so simple... might as well finish it laaaa

STEP 2

CAREFULLY slide the cable tie back towards the cable, making sure u hold the connectors properly so it doesnt get mixed up. while doing it, also at the same time carefully slide in a small cut out of heatshrink to replace the cable tie..DO NOT tighten or cut out the cable tie just yet! leave it as it is at the cables..then heat the heatshrink. (careful not to burn ur hand/ fingers while heating it up coz ur still holding the connectors tight remember?)

STEP 3

now bring back the initial cable tie to the front..as close to the plugs as possible and tighten it kow kow.
cut out some heatshrink of the appropriate length..making sure it covers the plugs AND the cable tie. the cable tie will act as an achor (not the beer ) so that the heatshrink wont be sliding all over the place.

STEP 4

slide in the second piece of heatshrink over the 1st layer of heatshrink all the way in until it covers the cable tie and shrink the bugger. the picture above is the end result. they are my front panel switches etc and also my USB headers (which are seperate)

now everytime i have to remove my mobo & mobo tray out of my microfly i dont have to think about the front panel headers anymore, meaning i wont be lazy to remove them la

do take note...i did not cover the whole of the plugs for 2 reasons
1/ to be able to see some form of marking on the plugs so that i know which side goes where
2/ if u look at the earlier pix... my mobo connectors has some form of "border" around the pins. if i were to put heatshrink to cover the entire plug, i might not be able to fit it back in due to the borders...those whose mobo do not have these borders, can cover the entire plug if u wish

u can still make it look better with sleeving etc...but i was in a rush and i couldnt be bothered to make it so cun until like that...

anyway...sorry theres no pix of the thing in the case and plugged in...forgot to take pix of it was so excited to get my new PCI card (which is wifi card btw) up and running that i totally forgot mebbe ill go home and snap some and post it up here la.

simple right??? now i just wish other mobo manufacturers would provide the Q-connectors as well....something so simple and yet they still dont wanna provide it with their mobos... friggin morons...sheesh

Upgrading from E6850

hi guys.. i need some thoughts regarding this matter...so please read fully to understand the situation

here in the office, we have a very important and always used 400mb super mega EXCEL file. it filled with LOTS of formulas, calculations etc etc... this excel file is very important to our work. problem is... it takes forever to just OPEN the file... changing values in a single cell will also take up quite some time for all the calculations to be done. just to give an idea of how super mega power this file is... here are the timings on different setups to just open the file...from double clicking to the file popping up on screen..

P4630 HT @ 3.0ghz + 1gb DDR-400 = 30 minutes
Q6600 @ 2.4ghz + 4*1gb DDR2-800 = 15 minutes
Q6600 @ 3.0ghz + 4*1gb DDR2-800 = 13 minutes
E6850 @ 3.0ghz + 4*1gb DDR2-800 = 11 minutes

*take note the file is run locally i.e. on the PC itself and not through network, so its not the network that makes it slow.

also take note that NO OVERCLOCKING will be done and also that a quad core doesnt really help as EXCEL (MS Office 2003) doesnt utilize quads (based on the times posted above).

changing a single value in ONE cell can take up to 5 minutes (depending on rig) just for the calculations to complete. so yeah..its mad.

anyway..as per topic... this is regarding the E6850 rig (which belongs to my boss)....current setup of the rig is...

E6850 @ 3.0ghz
Asus P5K
4*1GB DDR2-800 Patriot Value Rams
Gigabyte 8400GS
WD 320GB HDD
Mushkin 550W PSU
Win XP 32 Bit
MS Office 2003

my boss is thinking of upgrading his rig specifically for this excel file....he wants to be able to open it faster and change values faster as well. so basically he wants faster loading times and faster calculation times. hes budgeting about 2k for the upgrade.

he was thinking of getting the following... (price from PC Zone price list downloaded from hardwarezone.com.my)

E8600 3.33 ghz - RM905
WD Velociraptor 300gb (10k rpm, 16MB cache, SATA2) - RM995

my question is, will this upgrade SIGNIFICANTLY reduce times for this excel file? will it be worth it or will there more benefits on spending the 2k elsewhere (which i cant see that theres anywhere else to upgrade for this usage). are there any new processors coming out SOON thats worth waiting for?

RAID 0 is out of the question... the HDD will have too many important data on it to risk losing. also performance rams would be useless imho as like i said earlier, NO OVERCLOCKING will be done. so unless @ stock performance rams makes a huge difference, i dont think theres any use for it.

would appreciate any thoughts on the matter....

thanks in advance

Picture Auto Resize

hey mods/ admins,

ive been browsing other forums and i see they have the picture auto resize feature when the [ img ] tags are used.

thought it could/ should be implemented here since quite a number of people dont know how to resize their pix for forums... either that or theyre just plain lazy or inconsiderate

anyway...heres 2 examples from kelisclub forum and ZTH... (will be using spoilers here for so that u get the full size and and can gauge wat i mean)

1/ i prefer the ZTH style.. where they will resize it for viewing and if u wanna view the pic in original size, u click on the top bar and itll resize there and then itself...

picture of before resized...

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

picture of after resized..

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

original link HERE

2/ kelisaclub, also works (same Invision Powerboard) only thing i dont like about kelisaclub's implementation are 2 things
i) when resized itll centralize the pic
ii) when u want to view the original size, itll open in a new window/ tab and not on the thread itself like zth

sample

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

original size of the pic can be seen HERE

to owner of the ZTH thread, if ur here i pinjam first ah... the kelisaclub no need to ask permission coz thats my thread

one thing to take note, for both forums, if the original image size falls within the "auto-resized" size, (u get what i mean right?), the image will remain as is and not be resized.

i really think it should be implemented here as well so that any pictures posted via the img tags wont go too big. hope u guys can consider this as it gets pretty annoying whn people post humungous pictures which makes it even harder to view.

also, i suggest auto resizing to 800*600 or 640*480 if possible (the 2 examples given are smaller) and NOT centralized.

thanks

EDIT: forgot to mention, reason i ask for auto resizing to 800*600 is mainly so that the photography forum can still show off their pictures at a decent size.

Intel vs NVIDIA.........again

QUOTE

May 30, 2008 3:45 PM PDT
Intel and Nvidia headed for licensing stand-off
Posted by Rich Brown

This started out as a rumor today, but Intel has since more-or-less confirmed that licensing discussions between Intel and Nvidia for Intel's next-generation processors are not going well and the resulting conflict could have implications for high-end gaming PCs.

The story is that Intel and Nvidia are currently negotiating technology licenses for Nehalem, Intel's next-generation desktop CPU due out at the end of this year. As we were told from multiple desktop vendors who wish to remain nameless, Intel wants to license SLI from Nvidia for its Nehalem chipsets, and if Nvidia won't, Intel will withhold the license that would enable Nvidia to support Nehalem's memory controller, and thus Nehalem, on its own chipsets.

We have no official confirmation from Nvidia on this, and Intel's statement from PR manager Dan Snyder is vague, but it lends credence to the story:

"There is a disagreement between Intel and Nvidia as to the scope of Nvidia's license from Intel to make chipsets compatible with Intel microprocessors. Intel is trying to resolve the disagreement privately with Nvidia and therefore we will not provide additional details. It is our hope that this dispute will be resolved amicably and that it will not impact other areas of our companies' working relationship."

Intel has been after SLI support for its chipsets for years, but has thus far only been able to build it into its ultra high-end Skulltrail motherboards, seemingly a one-off. With SLI available across all of its chipset lines, Intel would be able to sell motherboards that support both AMD's and Nvidia's multigraphics card technologies. Right now Intel boards (with the exception of Skulltrail) only support AMD's CrossFire.

Nvidia, on the other hand, has kept SLI close, often citing compatibility and certification concerns as the reason why no other chipset vendor has been able to offer SLI-capability. But if Nvidia loses out on Nehalem for its next-generation chipsets, the high-end desktop market will become more fragmented than it's been in years. Nvidia has been able to offer SLI-supporting chipsets for both AMD and Intel processors, but if this split happens, on one side we'll have Nehalem and CrossFire-based systems, the other will offer SLI (and possibly CrossFire, if hacks used in the past continue to work) and AMD CPUs.

In light of this rumor, Nvidia's recent marketing push encouraging upgraders to pick a graphics card before a quad-core CPU takes on new significance. If Nvidia knows high-end PC gamers will have to make a choice later this year, better to plant the seeds in its favor early. Intel probably has less to worry about, because gamers who demand SLI with a fast Intel processor can still use Nvidia's NForce 790i chipset, which supports the current generation of Intel Core 2 Extreme chips.

UPDATE 5:48pm PT - Intel released an additional statement after this blog was posted. "We are not seeking any SLI concession from Nvidia in exchange for granting any Nehalem license rights to Nvidia," the company said.

SOURCE

maaaaaaaaaaaannn....wtf is up with intel... theyve always been bullies. this isnt the first time they tried to monopolize the market. and i sure as hell dont want them to... coz if they do..imagine the price tag theyll be putting on their products!

first was the penryn 680i issue... now this???

greedy basturks.

Hi guys,

dunno where to post this and i think this is the best place to do it instead of the main FnF section...

I need some recommendations for bucket seats or semi buckets that fits the following criteria

1/ Fits into Kelisa
-i mean size wise. railing comfirm have to do wan la...

2/ Good for back/ backbone
- My GF has rather severe back problems... so something that is comfortable and has good back support is NEEDED especially for the passenger seat. My car suspension is rather stiff so need to consider this as well.
- I also have mild back aches but my GF gets priority coz her back pain is quite bad.
-most seats has better support for driver seat only and nuttin/minimal on passenger side. if both side has equal support would be nice.

3/ SSCUS
-quite interested in SSCUS but dunno how good they are for back support.
-would like to hear thoughts and experiences about these seats for back support

i dont mind if the seats are form other cars e.g GTI Skyline or watever.

EDIT: forgot...budget around +/- 1k... and prefer if they accept credit card...not enough cash

Thanks in advance guys.
