World's Smartest 2160p Toshiba Cell TV On Sale Soon

Toshiba has confirmed that they are close to launching a stunning new TV which will include the 64bit "Cell processor" which is the power processor used in Sony's new PS3 Playstation. It will also include a Blu ray player and a 1TB recorder in one unit and have a resolution three times greater than current 1080p TV's.

First tipped by SmartHouse in January 2009 the new LED powerhouse TV could be on sale in Australia by early 2010. It will go on sale in Japan in December 2009 and be shown at the 2010 CES show Toshiba has confirmed.

Called the "Cell Regza" the TV is so powerful that it is capable recording six HD TV channels at once while up scaling 1080p content to 3840 X 2160p.

We are also told that it will have a 1 Terabyte storage system built into the cell processor's personal video recorder. The Cell Broadband Engine was initially developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba but is now owned by Toshiba with royalties being paid to Sony and IBM.

Masaaki Oosumi, president of Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company said "The new Cell Processor TV bring together Toshiba imaging, storage and network technologies".

He added "It will be Toshiba's flagship model in the true sense. It is the ultimate entertainment machine that brings more excitement than a movie in a theatre. I would like to let users experience the same sensation as they felt by watching a colour TV for the first time."

He did not reveal the exact specifications of the new TV. At the 2009 CES SmartHouse was shown the Cell processor which is capable of delivering images to a screen at 3 times the quality of current 1080p resolution.
Toshiba will announce the specifications of the Cell TV within days, he said. As for the pricing, said that it will be "fairly expensive" Oosumi said.

The heart of the new Sony PS3, Sony has spent the last three year singing the praises of the Cell processor before the cash strapped Company suddenly sold the manufacturing of the processor to Toshiba who are now set to deliver a series of offerings featuring a cell processor.

DETROIT -- Eminem's music publisher wants a bigger slice from Apple.

Eight Mile Style LLC and a co-plaintiff, Martin Affiliated LLC, are suing Apple Inc., claiming they never authorized the use of 93 songs in a downloadable format on Apple's popular iTunes service.

The non-jury trial is expected to start Thursday in the rapper's hometown of Detroit, unless a settlement is reached Wednesday with the help of U.S. Magistrate Judge Virginia Morgan.

Eight Mile also is suing Aftermath Records, which controls the recordings in question, saying it didn't have the right to make deals on digital downloads.

It's unclear from court documents just how much money is at stake, but the plaintiffs claim Apple wrongfully gained $2.5 million through iTunes downloads, including $466,915 from "Lose Yourself," Eminem's biggest hit from the hip-hop film "8 Mile." The publisher also believes it should get a share of Apple's profit from the sale of iPods.

Eight Mile also claims Aftermath wrongfully collected $4 million off Eminem's songs on iTunes.

Apple denies the allegations and says it has a valid agreement with Aftermath Records. Eight Mile has received royalties but says that doesn't mean it can't press ahead with a lawsuit.

The "acceptance of a single check containing mostly royalties for authorized uses, but also containing small and hidden royalties for unauthorized uses, cannot operate as a satisfaction of a claim," Eight Mile's lawyers said in a recent filing in federal court.

Eight Mile says it still retains ownership, including copyright, of the compositions inside Eminem's recordings. If the case isn't settled, the trial before U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor will center on how to interpret contracts.

Eight Mile agreed in 1998 and 2003 that "Eminem would create master sound recordings embodying compositions, and that Aftermath would own those masters," Apple's attorneys said in a court filing.

"The parties also agreed that Aftermath and its distributors and licensees would 'have the exclusive right' to exploit the masters embodying the Eminem compositions 'in any and all forms of media now known or hereinafter developed,'" the lawyers said.

Howard Hertz, a lawyer for Eight Mile, declined to comment on the case Tuesday. A message seeking comment was left with Daniel Quick of the Apple/Aftermath legal team.

It's unknown if the rapper would attend a trial if there is one. Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, is not on the witness list.

Toshiba has come full circle in abandoning HD-DVD, debuting its BDX2000 Blu-ray player with BD-Live support.

Toshiba might have been the company that championed HD-DVD technology against Blu-ray a couple years ago in the so-called "format war" for domination of high-definition discs…and when Toshiba threw in the towel on HD-DVD it kinda of licked its wounds, focusing on wringing features and quality from standard DVD players without committing to licensing and making its own Blu-ray gear. However, last month the company announced it was joining the Blu-ray Disc Association, and now the company has officially announced its first Blu-ray player, the BDX2000.

"Toshiba is a technology leader in high definition products," said Toshiba's digital a/v group's marketing VP Jodi Sally, in a statement. "From listening to our consumers we know they demand access to full high definition content. With the introduction of our BDX2000 we are offering consumers what they want with a breath-taking HD viewing experience to meet the needs of today's home theater."

The BDX2000 offers 1080p output via HDMI and supports Blu-ray Profile 2.0 and BD Live: pop the player onto a home network via the integrated Ethernet jack, and users can download additional content associated with Blu-ray movies, like bonus scenes, trailers, shorts, games, and other material. The BDX2000 features a flip-out front panel that exposes controls; when combined with one of Toshiba's Regza TVs, both units can be controlled from a single remote. The BDX2000 also supports Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and sports an SD slot for putting photos, video, and other media on the big screen.

Toshiba says the BDX2000 will be available in November for a suggested price of $249.99.

15hrs AirAsia flight delay triggered chaos/violenc

Strait Tim,es reported that a 15hrs delay by an Air Asia flight at Medan Airport triggered those who will be late for work or not be able to go to work on Monday.

Airpot said that AirAsia often let passengers stranded for hours and is mulling actions against AirAsia.

The flight was originally scheduled to leave at 7.10pm local time on Sunday but was cancelled and rescheduled for 11am Monday.

** The Jakarta Globe reported that passengers had shouted at AirAsia employees and banged their fists on the service counters.
** They even detained an AirAsia employee and prevented him from leaving the airport until the airline gave them a confirmation on their flight departure.

MEDAN, Aug 12 — AirAsia received a tongue lashing from Medan's Polonia Airport authority and could face sanctions for an incident in which its stranded passengers vandalised facilities at the airport, reports said yesterday.

The trouble started after about 140 AirAsia passengers — whose nationalities were not reported — were left stranded at the airport for more than 15 hours on Sunday night.

Dozens of them vandalised airport facilities such as chairs and baggage trolleys to vent their frustration against the airline's management for cancelling the flight. The Jakarta Globe reported that passengers had shouted at AirAsia employees and banged their fists on the service counters.

They even detained an AirAsia employee and prevented him from leaving the airport until the airline gave them a confirmation on their flight departure.

A passenger, Rudi, said the disorder was a spontaneous response of passengers who were infuriated by AirAsia employees' failure to resolve the problem.

He said that almost half of the passengers on the scheduled flight work in Jakarta.

“I think we had every right to be angry because we had to work on Monday,” he told reporters at the airport.

Polonia Airport manager Rajali Abubakar said the airline began looking for hotels only after heated arguments with passengers. While some agreed to the arrangement, most demanded to be flown to Jakarta immediately as they had to work the following morning.

The flight was originally scheduled to leave at 7.10pm local time on Sunday but was cancelled and rescheduled for 11am the next day. Following the incident, AirAsia suspended its activities at the airport.

The Jakarta Post observed that its two ticket counters at the airport remained closed on Monday.

AirAsia could not be reached for comment and no reasons were given for the delay.

The airport administration confirmed that the airline company would continue operating but was temporarily closed because of the lack of a flight schedule. Rajali said he had spoken to the manager of AirAsia in Medan to clarify the incident.

He said an AirAsia representative had apologised for the incident, but that the airport operator would proceed with administrative measures against the airline and issue an official reprimand.

The Sunday incident was not the first for AirAsia, which, he said, regularly postponed its flights, often leaving passengers stranded for hours at Polonia Airport.

“We will reprimand them so they no longer delay their flights. As well as disappointing passengers, the move disrupts flight schedules at the airport,” he said. — The Straits Times

MACC nab Terengganu assemblyman for alleged bribery, suspect brought to Putrajaya

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 2 — A Terengganu state assemblyman was arrested today by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly accepting a RM20,000 bribe.

The assemblyman is alleged to have accepted the money as an inducement to secure a landscape project in Kuala Lumpur for a company.

It is learnt that he was picked up at about 9.30am in Kijal, south of here, when he was with a friend and that RM5,000 was found on him.

It is also learnt that the assemblyman has been taken to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya for further investigation.

A baby crocodile triggered panic among passengers on an EgyptAir flight from Abu Dhabi to Cairo on Friday when it took a leisurely stroll on board the aircraft, airport officials said.

Terrified passengers screamed at the sight of the 30-centimetre (one-foot-long) reptile as it made its way under seats and down the aisle.

Crew members managed to corner and capture the croc and handed it over to authorities when the plane landed in Cairo, where it was to be housed at the Giza zoo.

All of the passengers were questioned about the crocodile, but none admitted bringing it on board.

In August 2007 the authorities seized more than 250 baby crocodiles, snakes and chameleons which a Saudi man tried to smuggle out of Egypt. The menagerie also ended up at Giza zoo.

CBHD Leads Market Share over Blu-ray in China

That new HD format launched in China earlier this year has already overtaken the Blu-ray format. This can’t be sitting well with the Blu-ray crew considering the size of the Chinese market and the fact the CBHD only has one studio behind it.

CBHD seems to be doing much better against rival Blu-ray than its ill fated predecessor HD DVD. A recent report by a Japanese news station looking at CBHD format and its competition with Blu-ray confirms CBHD has a 3% market share lead on Blu-ray. The CBHD format launched in the first half of 2009, Blu-ray launched in China mid 2008.

Just because Toshiba has given up on HD DVD and moved on, doesn't mean the format war is totally over for red. According to a report by a Japanese TV station, its successor, China Blue HD is actually leading Blu-ray in marketshare in that country. Of course, based on the article found by our friends at FormatWarCentral, all we have to go on is a machine translated description of a video in a language we don't speak describing the apparent initial success of the government backed format in a socialist republic. China has unleashed a new “format war” for control of the high-definition DVD market in an audacious attempt to unseat the Blu-ray disc as the sole global standard.

The launch of the China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD) for domestic use is viewed by analysts as a dramatic assertion of the country’s rising technological confidence and they believe that the format could mount a serious challenge to Blu-ray.

China’s gambit comes just 18 months after the Blu-ray Disc consortium — a 100-strong group of technology and media companies led by Sony — declared victory over the similarly sized HD-DVD Forum led by Toshiba. Warner Bros, whose support for Blu-ray was the deciding factor during the 2008 war, has said it will support the new format as the technology finds its feet.

The potential growth of the format in China has already become clear. In just a couple of months since it was launched, the cheaper all-Chinese CBHD players are thought to be outselling Blu-ray players at a rate of about three to one. The discs, priced at 50 yuan (£4.50), set consumers back about a quarter of the cost of a Blu-ray.

Toshiba’s defeat last year followed a marketing showdown, allegations of giant payoffs and dirty tricks and an all-out charm offensive to win the support of the Hollywood studios. The sudden capitulation by HD-DVD cut short what might have been a long and expensive campaign in the VHS/Betamax mould.

But the sudden emergence of the CBHD this year has shattered the peace. Atul Goyal, technology analyst at CLSA, said: “You are looking at a technology that comes with the backing of the Chinese Government and has the power to win the support of the big studios if they sense it is a way to make money in China. Everyone thought the format war was dead, but it is clearly still alive.”

Toshiba confirmed that the CBHD format was based largely on technology developed for HD-DVDs and that it was “in a licensor-licensee relationship”.

China’s decision to back the new format — the Government owns the critical software — is understood to arise from a desire to protect its electronics industry from the royalty costs of using technology developed overseas. Chinese makers of ordinary DVD players have to pay about $22 per machine in royalty costs to a variety of patent holders; the dominance of Blu-ray would have condemned them to many more years of payments as that technology grew in market share.

The creation of a “home grown” format will fatten the margins of Chinese technology groups as Beijing pushes them to become internationally competitive.

From the perspective of Hollywood studios, meanwhile, the sale of movies on a cheap format may temporarily counteract the damage done by piracy.

CBHD was initially expected to flex its muscles as a format in China alone. Warner Bros has said that 100 titles will appear on the format by the end of this year and about 30 are already available.

But at least one other big Hollywood studio is understood to be considering support for CBHD, suggesting to some that it may creep out from China into neighbouring markets. CBHD players are available in Hong Kong and the cheaper format may prove attractive in other emerging markets in the region.

Although analysts believe that high- definition disc technology will only be a stopgap until the era of 100 per cent downloaded content, others believe that that time could be at least a decade away.
