monitor problem

everytime i restart or coldboot my system, my monitor always go nuts. During the motherboard screen and booting screen it is just okay but comes windows login screen, it'll start blinking. Actually i won't say it blinking because it just goes "no signal" and then it shows the display for a fragment of second before going black again for 1-1.5 seconds. Screen resolution is 1024x768 at 70Hz refresh rate. My monitor (i know it's lousy cheapo) is M-Life 14" i bought in Lowyat. My VGA card is Sapphire X1650 Pro.

The first i encounter this was when i still used my old Windows XP. Usually to fix it i either change the resolution to 800x600 and change back to 1024x768, or unplug and re-plug my monitor cable. But after a while, it no longer occurs in my XP installation. It just getting good. Now i change my OS to Vista Ultimate, it re-appear again. And this time it's more persistent in way that it usually won't cured after resolution change or re-plug. Need to repeat the process 3-4 times or sometimes more.

And the weirdest thing is that using my old Radeon 9600, the problem doesn't occur. Is it because of the analog to DVI converter that I used? if that's the case why my XP suddenly can boot smoothly? Before i totally formatted my XP partition, i have one day dual booting XP and Vista. XP booting is smooth but Vista is not.

Any idea? (sorry for long post.. trying to get as clear as i can)

Idiot Letter

Dear Child,

I am writing this slow because I know that you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the paper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home so we moved. I won't be able to send you the
address, as the last family that lived here took the house numbers when they
left so that they wouldn't have to change their address. This place is real nice. It even has a washing machine. I'm not sure if it works too well though. Last week I put a load in, pulled the chain, and haven't seen them since. The weather isn't too bad here., it only rained twice last week, The first time it rained for three days and the second time for four days. The coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Steve said it would be a little too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on,
so we cut them off and put them in the pockets. We got another bill from the funeral home. They said if we don't make the last payment on Grandma's grave, up she comes. John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were worried because it took him two hours to get me and Shelby out. Your sister had a baby this morning but I haven't found out what it is yet, so I don't know if you're an aunt or an uncle. If the baby is a girl, your sister is going to name it after me,
she's going to call it Mom. Uncle Pete fell in a whiskey vat last
week. Some man tried to pull him out but he fought them off and drowned. We
had him cremated and he burned for three days. Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your two friends were in the back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down. There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.

Love, Mom

PS, I was going to send you some money but the envelope was already sealed.

Folder Missing

hey guys.. I've got this weird problem with my pictures folder. The problem actually started with my external hard disk. That time i unplug the hard disk right after i hibernate (not turn off) my laptop and change to another external hard disk. Subsequently, this external hard disk (the second) was unreadable and i was prepared to bring it for recovery when i tried to make it internal by inserting it to a desktop. Then Windows XP performed the checkdisk that eventually managed to repair the indexes. Everything looks ok beside that there is this one folder (and funnily this one folder only) missing which is my pictures folder. I tried every single way like show hidden folder, set permission, etc but it still missing. The problem is the folder itself is too 'precious' to just let go (got a lot of photos with friends, wallpaper, etc) but is not priceless enough to do recovery (which might cost me hundreds bucks). Any software or techniques recommended?

Query about Hub

Does anyone know whether a line that's already connected to a hub can be connected to another hub? I'm not really good in networking things but now my company require me to connect at least 2 computers while there's only one line available. I was thinking of connecting this single line to a hub but even this line has already connected to a hub. Is it actually possible to connect it to another hub? If not what other option do i have?

Network Problem

hi all. ok i'll tell u my case. I'm stayin in an apartment where all the residents share the same internet access. The connection speed in here (singapore) is actually pretty fast even when 4 people share it. But that provided that we all share the same (or roughly same) bandwidth. The problem is that one of my housemate is a b*tch and she kinda reserve all bandwidth to her. Otherwise kind of nonsense ler.. She said she didn't download any torrent but when she's connected, other housemates can't get through to the internet even for just browsing. For your information, the default download speed (when used alone) is about 170-300 kbps for direct download. I'm not sure the specified bandwidth but this should be pretty fast rite?

I tried to block her by setting the router to accept only my and my roommate's MAC Address but of no use. She could somehow set her computer to bypass this router setting. We tried thousands of way like limiting the DHCP user to just two (and when she connect, either one of us who already connected get DC suddenly), banning the ip address (everytime restart router the ip random again), etc.

Does anybody knows how to block her? really thankful for any useful suggestion.
