Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Masahiko Horie said Japan should have a “Look West Policy”, in reference to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s “Look East Policy”.

“Unlike Japan which is too homogeneous, where its people share the same culture, tradition and language, Malaysia is unique in many ways,” he told journalists after delivering a lecture on “Climate Change and Cool Earth” in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai campus.

Horie said he was impressed with the open house concept practised by Malays, Chinese, Indians and ethnic groups in Sabah and Sarawak during festive occasions.

“I really enjoy going to open houses one after another here.”

Whenever he is back in Japan, Horie said he would go to different prefectures and universities to give talks on Malaysia, especially on its multi-racial society.

Meanwhile, university deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Dr Marzuki Khalid said the university had forwarded a proposal to set up a Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology at its international campus in Kuala Lumpur.

A Cabinet paper was being prepared on the matter, which would be established with a RM300mil grant, he said.

More adult Malaysians turn to the Net for sex info

PETALING JAYA: More adults are relying on the Internet to get information on sex, according to a Durex Sexual Wellbeing Survey.

As much as 75% of Malaysians gave credit to the Internet for teaching them the bedroom “how-tos”.

Men (75%) outnumber women (71%) in using the Internet to surf about sex.

Seventy-three per cent of the respondents also learn about sex through magazines.

Other sources include books (65%), friends and peers (56%) and partners (43%).

All these surpass sex education at school, which makes up only 36% of them.

The number of respondents was at 1,026 with an equal number of women and men aged 18 years and above.

Despite the figures, less than half of Malaysians — 45% of men and 39% of women — think there is enough advice and information available on the issue.

The survey stated that 73% of Malaysians who had formal sex education are satisfied with their sexual wellbeing while the global average of sexual satisfaction stands at 59%.

However, the survey also found that 51% of those who received sex education at school did not learn about conception while 71% were not taught about sexually transmitted diseases.

Less than half of Malaysians (48%) had wished their sex education had included love, respect and on giving pleasure to one’s partner.

It found that about 44% of those aged between 16 and 24 liked to have received more information on the subject in comparison to 62% among those aged between 35 and 44.

The survey is the fourth in a series of reports by Durex, with this one emphasising on knowledge and education.

God saved me when the earth shook, says survivor

PADANG: When the earthquake struck, Firun was out in his padi field. He just stood still watching the horror unfold in front of him.

A hill, about 500m in front of him moved and part of it collapsed onto the village beneath, totally smothering it.

And then he saw another hill 300m to his left also shifting and massive chunks of land came crushing down onto his own village of Chumanak.

“I saw people running but the earth just came down on them. And I couldn’t see them anymore. I was so scared and I was shivering.

“Then the movements stopped right where I was by this coconut tree,” he said, pointing to the sole tree that was still standing.

Firun is lucky in more ways than one.

His house too was spared. His is the only one not wiped out in the flattened, muddy land where three villages (Chumanak, Kg Koto and Lubuk Lawe) used to stand.

And what is even more amazing is that his house is totally intact.

Not a single window was broken. His dishes, glasses and bowls did not break in the 7.6 magnitude earthquake. There wasn’t even a crack!

“I don’t know why God saved me,” he said.

His wife and his mother, who were in the house during the quake, survived, too.

But the frightened Firun did not go to get them immediately.

He instead ran to the suspension bridge which is just 10m away from him and went across the river to the other side to be safe and to make sense of the tragedy.

He walked around and saw there had been more landslides and continued on even when it started to pour.

He finally made it back to his house at 10pm (about five hours after the quake) to get his mother and wife.

“By that time the river was swollen and water levels had risen covering the suspension bridge and coconut tree. My wife and mother were really frightened. I have never seen them that way before,” he said, adding that he quickly got them out to higher ground and to safety.

But Firun’s story does have a sad side.

His 10-year-old son was watching TV at a stall in the village when the earthquake occurred. He died.

“I feel ribut (chaotic) when I think of him so I would rather not think,” he said.

UiTM confers honorary doctorate on Rosmah

In his speech, vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah said Rosmah’s diligence towards propagating early education had resulted in the formulation and formalisation of policies in the area.

He said Rosmah had launched the Permata Project to raise the quality of early education programmes and to make it available to more children, especially those in the rural areas, through the setting-up of Permata centres nationwide.

Rosmah, in her acceptance speech, said it was crucial that children under the age of five be given attention and focus because it was a critical formative period from the human development perspective.

She said children were the nation’s future as well as a valuable asset and therefore must be given the opportunity to acquire world-class education.

She disclosed that she had conferred with a group of professionals from various fields, about four years ago, on the importance of early education for children.

She said that Najib, who was then the deputy prime minister, accepted the outcome of the meeting and the Government eventually incorporated in into the National Early Childhood Education Policy.

Assault video clip has bloggers believing it's TBH

A VIDEO CLIP circulating widely in cyberspace has many bloggers claiming that it showed political aide Teoh Beng Hock being assaulted by some people, reported Sin Chew Daily yesterday.

The video alleged the person being assaulted was Teoh who was found dead at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.

People who knew Teoh said the person in the video clip was not him.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said there was too much information – both true and false – available on the Internet.

He urged the public not to be misled by information on the Internet.

Ismail also told Sin Chew that the police would investigate the video as some claimed that the suspect was being attacked by several policemen.

Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar urged the public to lodge a police report over the video clip and urged them not to speculate on information from the Internet.

The daily also reported Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong as saying that Teoh’s fiancee Soh Cher Wei could report to the SJKC Malayan in Batu Pahat to teach. She no longer needed to return to Kajang, said Dr Wee.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have denied allegations of detainee abuse allegedly shown in a video clip which has been posted on several blogs.

The clip purportedly shows a man being assaulted by several uniformed men in a room.

“After viewing the clip, it is clear that the uniforms do not belong to police personnel at all,” said the Bukit Aman police headquarters in a press statement yesterday.

Police said concrete steps were being taken to ensure that detainee abuse does not occur.

Najib: Govt willing to offer venues for peaceful

"Streets demonstrations should not continue and the authorities can take action," he said.

Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Police detained 589 people who were among some 10,000 people involved in illegal assemblies in Kuala Lumpur to protest against the ISA.

Lonely widow surfs web for one-night stands

He said the opening of the party’s community education centres in Wangsa Maju showed that the party had not slowed down in its service to the people there despite losing the constituency in last year’s general elections.

Ong said this was in contrast with political opportunists who only performed “seasonal service” when there was an opportunity to gain political publicity.

He added that MCA’s involvement in education did not mean the party politicised education.

“MCA as an entity was initially a welfare entity and later transformed into a politcal entity. Until today, we remain committed to our educational endeavours,” he said.

In the press release by MCA’s community education bureau which was distributed during the event, the party’s 10 lifelong learning centres, 26 community libraries and 29 resource centres would be renamed “MCA Community Education Centres”.

Meanwhile at the 8th Asia Pacific International Entrepreneur Excellence Award 2009, Ong said entrepreneurs should no longer benchmark their performances against domestic competitors.
