Ali, Ashok and Ah Beng Escape from Bukit Aman

Will you watch "Ali, Ashok and Ah Beng Escape from Bukit Aman"?

It's about the movie of three (seemingly) good friends finding a used condom in a tong sampah one day, and how they end up mired in the middle of a political conspiracy that would shock the nation? Will they betray each other for their lives?

And it's packed with action and some C4 explosions.

Will you watch? (Because I don't dare to make it).

What genre Malaysian films could be famous for?

I know there are many exceptions, but generally Hong Kong movies are famous for its action/cops flicks, korean for their comedy/romance flicks, Thai for horror and action....

What about Malaysia? If Malaysian films are to conquer overseas market, what kind of genre/market it could target itself to?

Should we follow such strategy? Let's just discuss with an open mind.

Of course, the first task is to make better films for our very own people to see. How about a film that ALL RACES would throng to see?

Some people (sadly including some government officials) argue Malaysian films have limited market because of language barrier.

But I really don't agree. I don't know Korean or Thai but I love watching them. I hope they/government could really think outside of their kampung mindset. Well, that's my personal opinion.

Mandriva's Gdium 10-inch netbook

Will you buy this?

http://www.gdium.com/

10″.
1024×600.
1.1Kg.
4 hours.
Mandriva Linux.
G-Key (key to the G Spot?)
Gayaplex.

The first Gdium will be a netbook with a 10", 1024x600 resolution display and a battery life of four hours, weighing in at 1.1kg. The Gdium itself is an interesting system: it uses the MIPS-derived Loongson CPU by ST Microelectronics, which helps to deliver the long battery life. Most interesting, though - especially for Mandriva! - is the way the operating system and data are stored. The Gdium has no internal storage at all. The operating system and all user data are stored on a USB key, known as the G-Key, which plugs into a USB port under the keyboard, in the middle of the machine. This system lets you keep your system and data with you and use it on any Gdium system, so it's ideal for any environment where several systems will be shared among many users - like many office and education environments. There's no need to keep one particular laptop with you, just plug your G-Key into any Gdium and it will work just the same.

The Gdium will be available in Europe, North America and China starting in September 2008. Pricing is not yet finally confirmed but can be expected to be less than 400 Euros in Europe.

Will you watch "Malacca" the movie?

This is a trailer I did for "Malacca", a movie about the mysterious Hang Li Po and Sultan Mansur Shah of the Sultanate of Malacca.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgmE_HfGP7Q

Of course many people have and would have criticised about the trailer on YouTube. Some attacked me for making Sultan Mansur Shah a pirate. Some have argued there is no pirate in our good old Malacca. Some simply hate see Chinese people in Malacca. Some complained why I didn't use any footage from Putri Gunung Ledang.

Anyway, before you start attacking my movie idea, please allow me to explain....

1. I imagined my movie to be fast moving, fun and upbeat like Pirates of the Carribean. So I use the footage from Pirates of the Carribean. I hate anything slow-moving. Even the movie is set in the old days, it doesn't neccessary need to be boring, right? (If you think otherwise, okay, this movie is not for you)

2. Secondly, I used Johnny Depp as Sultan Mansur as it's the only mean to get big-time producers interested in the project. (No offence to anyone because I doubt it would/could be produced in Malaysia without making some of the producers go bankrupt... )

3. Thirdly, in the movie, Sultan Mansur Shah is only disguising himself as a pirate. He is NOT a pirate in my story. And to those who claim that there was no pirate in Malacca, please do your research properly.

4. Fourthly, I personally do not believe that Hang Li Po is a princess from China based on the non-existence of historical accounts in China and many other historical facts. (Sorry) She is not a princess in my movie.

5. Also, in my story, I want to present the fact that Malacca was then already a "international port". There are people from everywhere.... China, India, Japan, even Africa beside the majority Malays. If you read any historical texts (not the "political-correct" historical textbooks the government made us to read), you will know Malacca is very different than what we have been taught it to be.

6. When I did the trailer, I did not have access to Puteri Gunung Ledang the movie.

Okay, what I need now is a couple of million dollars (USD40 millions to be exact). Please start donating to my project, and you will see Malacca in the year 2012.

-----------------------------------ADDED-----------------------------
*Note: I'm not a historian. So don't readily believe my words. The trick is, do your own reading.

Anyway, I AGREE with you guys about the "true identity" of Hang Li Po. But I would not use the word "proven". It's never - and I doubt could ever be proven with concrete facts (unless anyone could conjure up the spirits of Hang Li Po and interrogates her in person? LOL). No historian dare to use the word.... yet, I think.

On the other hand, even though the Ming Dynasty did (reportedly) fervently record every meticulous records on "everything", there is also a possibility that such record has been erased.

Gavin Menzies' theory about Chinese people "discovering America" is partly based on his hypothesis (again, hypothesis) that the Confucian scholars have destroyed (some) evidence of the discovery for fear that the Emperor would once again send out his treasure fleets at the expense of his country's "wellfare". (Has anyone read his new book about Chinese people planting the seeds of Renaissances in Europe? He must be making a lot of people angry. LOL)

What if, for some reasons, that part of the history has been erased?

Our understanding towards the history is based on an assumption that all historical records are truthfully written. Well, what if they were not?

There was no mass media then. No widely distributed newspaper as we know it (During the Tang dynasty in China [618-906], the Kai Yuan Za Bao published government news; it was painted on silk and mostly read by government officials.).

Who knows what really happened? (Even there was mass media, would the truth be readily available to us? There are so many speculations about 911 even we have access to the footage and this and that... but do media provide us proof or simply more confusion? Okay, this is another topic I've no answer of.)

On the other hand, no offence to anyone, but Sejarah Melayu is filled with - again, one could always argue it's real, haha - what I would call "cerita dongeng" put together to glorify the Sultans then.

Among the "cerita dongeng" (not mentioned in our textbooks of course), it tells the story of how the Emperor of China drank the water Sultan of Malacca used to wash his feet.

So, how serious we should take Sejarah Melayu as our source of reference?

Anyway, my story tries to make use of all the "uncertainties" and "what-ifs" that exist.

And it's nothing more than a story. Not historical account. This is not a documentary. Hope I've made myself clear.

The notebook will be manufactured by Compal Electronics, according to the sources.

Dell is coming to the low-cost notebook party relatively late, compared to other first-tier vendors such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Acer. However, the Dell E series low-cost notebook will be priced at only US$299, US$100 cheaper than Acer's Aspire one, and the market sources estimates that Dell can ship 2-3 million units this year.

The panels for the Dell notebook will be provided by Samsung Electronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), and perhaps AU Optronics (AUO), when the panel makers begins mass production later in the third quarter. However, the sources noted that Dell will not use all three panel suppliers at the same time.

Dell E Slim is not a slimming pill

SOURCE: http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/12/dell-e-...in-one-fell-sw/

We got a nice helping of slides dropped on our virtual doorstep this evening, fleshing out Dell's upcoming netbook -- which they seem to be calling the "Dell E." Um, Eeenteresting name choice, but that doesn't seem set in stone, and there's plenty else going on here to ponder over.

Dell's breaking the Dell E into two device types, a 8.9-inch model clearly meant to take on the Eee 900, and the 12.1-inch "E Slim" which actually looks positioned to take on the MacBook Air and X300, at a mere 0.8-inches thick, though perhaps in a lower-end capacity. Even the 8.9-inch model will have some distinctions, with E Classic model for super low-end use, and E Video and E Video+ for more RAM, larger flash storage, webcams and Bluetooth in the + model. Rollout looks to be slated for August for the E, August / September-ish for the E Slim, and a followup for both of those in October of WWAN, with WiMAX after that.

Dell even has a second version of both devices slated for Q2 2009, but that's all we know about those so far. Perhaps most interesting is that all of these run Linux and Windows XP, and while it's not clear if there's a full-featured Linux OS onboard, there does seem to be an instant-on, Foleo-esque Linux included on all of them called BlackTop.

We're not sure if there's any relation to Splashtop, but the janky-ass interface and email / calendar / contacts apps seem to be telling us no. BlackTop will support WWAN and WiFi, and Dell plans to move the 2.0 version to the Latitude and Vostro lines in a year or two. Peep the slides below for all the gory details. Oh, and the price? Dell E starts at $299.

Weirdest English Movies of all time

I'm sorry the short list as I've not seen many weird movies, especially those by David Lynch (e.g. Eraserhead, etc) and many other masters.

I also apologize because of my personal preference for Charlie Kaufman's writings (and thus the inclusion of his work, which I think is truly weird and quirky and unexpected)

Some are weird and confusing (to me)... Like Mulholland Dr. and Jacob's Ladder.

And I've purposely include English films. I guess there are more non-English "weird" films. Like the ones directed by Fellini. I guess they ought to have their own poll. Or experimental films like Un Chien Andalou. Or by films by Japanese directors, like Woman in the Dune (which I think IS the weirdest yet most powerful film I've ever seen, no question asked).

Some are chosen for the story structure, some the theme, some simply the mood (like Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man), and some... just weird.

I wanted to include Spartan... to me, it's really weird why it's popular. LOL.

Anyway, feel free to share the "weirdest movies" you've ever seen. Thanks!!

Movies with best twist in the end

To me, the best movie with the best twist is The Sixth Sense, Open Your Eyes, The Others and Old Boy.

Personally, I think Old Boy (Korean) is the most unthinkable and thought-provoking. (So rare to see films being so entertaining and deep)

Please suggest other movies if they are not on the list. Thanks!

ADDED: Damn, I forgot Se7en. Without it, the poll lacks lustre. Hehe, sorry, I don't know how to add this to the poll.

Okay, looks like I've missed out a lot of good stuff, like:

The Prestige
Se7en
The Usual Suspect(s?)
Planet of the Apes
12 Monkeys

And the following suggested movies:
Star Wars
Presumed Innocent
Wild Things
Identity (?)
Mulholland Dr. (Okay, this one is more like a confusion than a twist ending to me [like the movie Apocalypse], but could anyone explain the story to me)t?
ADDED: I apologize to everyone who voted the poll. I actually missed out Shawshank Redemption. I know I'm an idiot. I think the poll no longer valid. Unless the administrator could help me add the option.

Crash - A racist or anti-racist movie?

Many (white) people revere Crash as their "anti-racist" movie. But I have a totally opposite view:

1. Only white guys have a chance to redeem themselves in the movie. A white molester saves the life of his black victim, and that makes him a hero again? Puuwweeek! What kind of message it's trying to convey to the audience?

2. Asians are stereotyped as human trafficker, loud and obnoxious. Where are their redemption??

3. Spanish servant saves Sandra Bullock. It's not shown at all on screen. Why? Only white guys' redemption deserve screen time?

4. The white policeman becomes a racist because his father is a victim of the government's aid to the black community. What kind of justification is that?

To me, Crash is just a "feel-good" movie made for white people to make them feel justified towards racism while pretending to be an "anti-racist" movie. Totally hypocrite! Puuwweeek!

Korean movie: Old Boy

Koreans are really creative in terms of storytelling... The subjects they do are often so daring... Old Boy is a classic example. Of course it's based on a Japanese comic, but the movie is so edgy that you think movies like Fight Club is a joke.

If you are a film buff and open-minded and you have not seen it, I highly recommend it.

Who ever wants to study film production in US

If you plan to go to US to study film production and to ultimately work there, my advice is to strategize so that you could ultimately get a work permit (or any permit) in the end. If not, your degree won't help you a bit in the industry.

Or if you have lotsa money, just migrate there. Or get married with an American. Or apply for the Greencard Lottery. LOL. Work permit is hard to get in the industry with your film production degree (even Master's) unless your boss is willing to help with the paperwork (meaning your job scope must be of a "specialist" level.)

Of course, if you're as good as Ang Lee who graduated from NYU, then probably they will give you a special talent visa. That of course it's extremely hard to get. Imagine you must be at least as successful as Ang Lee. No Kidding.

The immigrational policy in United States, which gives preference to IT tech workers, is that they don't welcome you. Hahaha.

Which is the King of UMPC 2008?

(I know this thread is going to piss some people off... but I want to do a poll, so I'm starting a new thread... Just delete this one if it's really irrelevant)

It seems that new UMPCs are being introduced every minute... haha.

First Wind, then HP mini-note, then Acer, then Dell... wow... Then "rumors" say Asus' going to introduce EEE 1000 at the same time with EEE 901... wow.... hope the prices will keep dropping fast!

Anyway, wonder which one will be our best bet for price and quality?
