actually, its a relative %. its not absolute. like there was this one time where i reinstalled my tf2 from scratch, using cftoolbox (because it uses absolute % ), and when i ran steam, it felt the need to patch something, and was suddenly 0%, and i was like WTF?! only to realize what actually happened after that. thus steam is one scary sob.

nono, the % u see on steam while downloading or even updating isnt totally real.
i sumetime download can from 50% jump to 100%...

That, you have to blame Steam. It's seriously screwed up. Try to launch game, then there will be a new window with the upgrade status bar. Don't close it and leave it till it's done, when Play Game option is clickable. Works for me that way.

i had the same problem like you... keep deleting the clientregistry.blob then update... stucked a lot during updates, damn failmyx... restart update again, stucked again, delete clientregistry.blob again...
repeat repeat and repeat again till its finally working now...

As much as failmyx sucks, I guess Steam has its share of blame. Never came out of its problematic state since it first launched
