Hi all.

Need a little help here.
My office pc is still using an ancient OS (Win98).
Therefore, I can't auto detect from my USB port.

Do any of you have any idea where I can get my hand on most of the common drivers needed (such as those already included in WinXP).

Not really familliar with this ancient OS, so if I'm needed anything extra to get things work, please do tell me.

Thanks in advance.

-Hmm, just a "Copy & Paste" from my other (old) thread (http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/71774/) :

QUOTE

Hi all,

-Here's another easy way to find your driver for any Windows version (2000 and above):

1. Open up "Device Manager" (press Windows key+R to open Run dialog box, type devmgmt.msc and press ENTER);

2. Locate the device that needs driver update; usually the one with yellow exclamation mark (!), or red 'X' mark;

3. Double-click it, go to "Details" tab, and select "Device Instance Id";

4. Note the actual hardware ID (including bus type,vendor ID, device ID, and subsystem ID) there. For example my NIC is PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8139&SUBSYS_0C4A8086 (ignore/remove the rest of the string);

6. You can select and press CTRL+C to copy the value, or right-click it and select "Copy" (Vista only);

7. Next, go to the new Microsoft Update Catalog here: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/ (you have to use latest version of Internet Explorer);

8. Paste the string you just copied before plus the operating system name you want the driver for. For example, paste/type PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8139&SUBSYS_0C4A8086 XP and hit Enter if you want for Windows XP. If there's no matching/relevant result, try removing the subsystem ID (the &SUBSYS_XXXXXXXX part);

9. Once the result comes out, click the "Last Updated" column header to sort the driver by the latest version first;

10. Click the item you wanted in the "Title" column. When a window pops up, review the "Architecture" and "Supported products" section to make sure it match your operating system and platform (X86 (32-bit) or AMD64 (64-bit)).

11. Then, click the "Package Details" tab. Look under the "Supported Hardware IDs" and find the one that matches your actual device ID.

12. If match, click the "Add to basket" (the blue button above). Close this window to return to main window.

13. If you want to select another driver, you continue to browse the list. You may also make a new search (don't worry, the item you added will remains). If not, go to next step.

14. Now you could proceed to download by clicking "view basket" at the top right part of the window. A new window will appears and asking you to provide the location to store the files. Advice: create a new folder on a root drive (e.g. "C:\Device Drivers" or "D:\myDrivers") because the downloaded files which is CAB/ZIP packages have very long filenames (up to hundreds of characters!). If the file path too long, you will have difficulties opening/moving the files.

15. Extract the packages using archive manager (such as the free & open source 7-Zip).

16. Return to "Device Manager" to install the driver!

Regards,
-Musafir_86.
