Is he TRUE or OUT,

Hi all, I'm newbie to this audiophiles & this is my 1st post..

I owned an onkyo HT with stock speaker set back to 3 yrs ago & recently looking for entry level hifi system. I've a budget around RM4~5k & my wish list as below:

Marrantz CD6002
Marrantz PM6002
MA Bronze BR2 or MS 902i

However, when i seek opinion from my hair stylist which is also a hifi fans today about my wish list, he suggests me to spend more time for 2nd hand stuffs that bring more value to money especially for entry-level start. My jaw dropped when I listen to his suggestion (go for 2nd hand) when I realized he had invested RM80k on his own hifi system. Is he TRUE..??

Then he said there is an electronic appliance shop (ex-hifi shop) still stock a pair of nearly new condition Rogers 101 (5" driver) could be getting around RM700. That's fine for me but when I asked the year of model, he said probably around 15 years ago & he said i'll not far wrong for getting this set of speaker after knowing my listening preference. Then he also asked me to serach for Pioneer A440 integrated amp or NAD 320 at around RM500 and spend a little bit more on interconnect & cables. He has not been upgrading his hifi system since 4 year back. Is he OUT..??

I really apprciate his input & seriouly considering his suggestion but i can't even find Rogers brand speaker in WHF magazine leh.. Any idea about this Rogers 101 performance before i go for audition with him?

Thanks for any input..

Looking for hi-end PC speakers..., pls recommend

Didn't get any response in the Please Recommend... thread, so opening nu topic....

I've moved to a new place & am looking to get a new PC speakers after my last set died. I'm looking at some 2.1 as well as 5.1 systems, but 5.1 is really backstep as I hate the whole "wires running around everywhere" thing.

The shortlist i'm looking at is:

Edifier S530D
Altec Lansing MX5021

I'm also looking at the following 5.1 systems:

Altec Lansing GT 5051R
Logitech Z-5450

So I have following questions:

1. S530D versus MX5021, who win?
2. Is GT 5051R better than the winner of (1)?
3. Is the Z-5450 for sale anywhere in KL?

Bonus Q4 - does anyone have any opinions on the BOSE Companion 5 speaker system? Bose has a good rep, but the speakers are VERY expensive & don't come with alternative inputs like optical/co-ax etc?

Main usage is gaming and movies/videos. All answers & suggestions appreciated.

[Review] Audio-Technica ATH-CK1,

I got this from Mac City, 1 Utama. I lost my HPM-70, and I had an old set which had its earphones spoilt, so I bought it. Good for my iPod and phone too.

Well, firstly, I didn't really know about this brand, though I've heard its name once. The seller was a real nice guy, mainly because I was kinda busy so I had to bring my laptop bag around with me (which had my iPod, PSP, Vaio, chargers, external drives, wireless mouse, wireless lan adapter, and the usual junk I bring along to my cousin's house). It beeped along the way, and since all of the stuff in the shop is like padlocked, he let me go without checking to get something from my bag (my wallet).

When I came back, well, I told him I had no idea on what earphone to get. I had a choice:

1. Sennheiser CX300 - RM3XX
2. Audio-Technica ATH-CK1 - RM125
3. SonicGear EarPump - RM49

I went for the Audio-Technica, well, because he told me that the EarPump is for users with a very low budget.

It comes with 3 sizes of earbuds ( XS , S, M ) and a carrying case.

Been listening to it just for a while, because my iPod ran out of battery halfway...

I love the bass with the iPod touch. It is really clear, doesn't cover over the treble, and most of all it isn't cracky even at the highest volume. Everything is so clear. You could even hear a cricket's call in the song (if there's one).

Conclusion:

This earphone is an all-rounder - bass reproduction is very good, with treble by its side. Worth the RM125 spent.

DVD or Online downloaded High Def Movie, Which is Better Quality?

So I was just thinking....

I realise that now there's quite a lot of HIGH DEFINATION movies and series to download from the internet. each file ranges from 4Gb to 22gb.
So I was thinking that if I put this file into a external juke box drive and connect it to my High Def LCD to play.

How will the quality like? I know when I watch on My 22" LCD monitor, it look way much nicer... but if I use this juke box to stream it into my TV, will the quality in term of picture and sound be better then DVD's?

DVD's also can control normal audio to DTS...

Comments pls...

Thanks

Newbie - Usher S-520 with Onkyo 606 or Yamaha 663, Review for suggestions

Hi everybody, looking for sifu's help and suggestions on whereabout & pricing.

I've recently auditioned the Usher S-520S bookshelf speakers and found it to be interestingly good ... I'm eager to get that @ RM 1300.00
Anybody got any experience with that before?

I'm new to these HiFi / AV / Home Theater gadgets, and I've a very limited budget to start with. (AV receiver and bookshelf 1st, other surround and subwoofer @ later stage)
So any recommendations for which AV i should pair it up with ?

I'm looking at Onkyo TX-SR 506 ($1600) / Onkyo TX-SR 606 ($2700) and Yamaha RX-V663 ($1800++)
Anybody can help suggest where to get those AV receivers cheap ... ? possible with installment payment options ?
I've checked HSL website selling Yamaha RX-V663 at $2300++ ... much expensive.

Or should i just get a 2nd hand / used AV to run it first for budget conscious ?

TQ !

PSB Speakers Owners Thread, The Canadian Speakers

Since they're more & more PSB speakers owner in LYN, I am opening up a thread for the PSB Speaker discussion here.

I have the Alpha T1 & C1, paired with Yamaha RX-V863 & Velodyne CHT-12R.

Tested the Speaker with a Jazz CD sampler (2 channel - Pure direct), I must say the T1 is a very solid performer with such low price. The mid & high is very good but you'll need a good sub to get the good low kicking the butt.

Especially if you are into strings performances, the sound are so real and natural, you can hear the vibration of the strings like they're being perform 1 feet away from you. It's like "seeing" the music....not only hearing.

The most important thing is, it's very easy to drive the speaker, you don't need a high power amp to drive it.

Now I would wonder how the higher end model like Image etc. will sound.....
