[attachmentid=1292791]I noticed there are quite a number of Malaysians who are interested in the Amazon Kindle but could not get one because they are living outside of the US or countries where Amazon ships Kindles to.

I understand how frustrated it is when you know something good is out there but could not buy it just because the system does not allow you to. I got through so much hassle getting a Kindle in Japan when it was first launched in the US. Thank god the Kindle now ships to Japan. :-)

I figure I can put myself to use by exploiting my staying in Japan and having registered with Amazon US & Japan.
I would like to take this opportunity to offer my service to all of you who wants to get yourselves a Kindle.
Details of my service is as below.

1) Nature of transaction : Private Imports & Exports of Amazon Kindle 2 - the international wireless version to Malaysia
2) Type of transaction : Non-stock Delivery ( meaning I will send you the Kindle2 from Japan pending the arrival from Amazon US)
3) Coverage of transaction :
3.1) Order to Amazon US, receving the Kindle in Japan, register the Kindle for you, send it to Malaysia.
3.2) Purchase the Amazon Giftcard which you can use to buy books on your behalf.
3.3) Purchase of other Amazon accessories and send it to you.
3.4) Continuing support of buying additional Giftcards and accessories even after Kindle delivery.
4) Cost of transaction : Buyers bear the following costs
4.1) Cost of the Kindle2
4.2) Postage from US to Japan and then to Malaysia
4.3) Import duty when bringing the Kindle2 into Japan.
4.4) A 20% of the total cost mentioned above (4.1 + 4.2 + 4.3) as handling fees
4.5) Import duty when bringing the Kindle2 into Malaysia(if applicable)
5) Currency of transation : USD or JPY
6) Info for your reference:
6.1) Kindle 2 now ships for USD259
6.2) Postage from US to Japan is USD 21
6.3) Import duty incurred in Japan is USD15
TOTAL cost of bringing Kindle2 into Japan is about USD295.

I want to make the transaction as transparent as possible. I dont want to give you a blackbox price and take a margin from it.
I want the people who wants a Kindle to get their Kindle. The 20% handling fees is what I ask for in exchange of my time of doing the work.

If you need more details or want to discuss further please feel free to contact.

Thank you.

If You Could Write a Book/Novel, -- what will it be about?

Not everyone could write a book or a novel.
It can be of many reasons, such as not enough time to invest, having other priorities, etc, and most probably, just not good enough to be a writer @ lack of talent.
However, everyone can have an idea of what their own stories would be like; how it'll start, how's the middle part, and how epic is the ending.

If you could write a book or a novel, do share with us what will it be like
Who knows, by sharing the idea and getting some feedback, you might be interested enough to actually start writing it, and maybe one day finish it & publish it

Fantasy: Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, Confettis and Brickbats welcomed!

Hello everyone! A slow version of a bookclub. I am familiar with Fiction/Fantasy/SF to a certain extent. On cracking my head a bit, I can only come up with this as a fantasy series with tonnes of things to discuss. I have read up to Book 10 only but havent had the heart yet to pick up Book 11. So some of the things I mentioned here might have been resolved but somehow I doubt it.

Please note that this thread will be full of spoilers, so stop here if you don't want to hear any!

Here goes:-
Other than being (in)famous for its length (big fat ones up to Book 11 now), it is actually quite easy to get into. The storyline started simple enough with a shepherd DESTINED FOR GREAT POWER and APOCALYPSE APPROACHING. The magic system is comprehensive and believable, the worldbuilding is great. To begin, along with 2 other childhood friends, Rand al'Thor stumbled upon the beginning of the end of times. Guided by Moiraine and Lan, he discovered that he could be the Chosen One destined to remake the world. Many feared he heralds the next Breaking of the World, which previously depopulates many parts of the world with scale of disasters never seen before. His appearance was greeted with mixed feelings by different groups, many jostle to grab power even as the end approaches. Fear mounts as it appears that the seals to the Dark One are breaking one by one as well. The odds are not made any better with so much lost knowledge, diminished magic and a fractured world.

As he tries to figure out what was he supposed to do what he was destined for, he slowly goes mad as the male half of the magic he accessed was tainted during the Breaking of the World.

The sypnosis of mine does not do justice to the books. The story weaving is fantastic and I really don't know how did he juggle so many characters in the books. The plots within the plots all ongoing at the same time hence the huge cast. In the later books, each of the leads could end up on different continents and encounter totally different cultures/clans (Seanchan, Aiel, Aes Sedai etc)

The hooks (those that I can remember):
a) what Tarmon Gaidon will be. So far RJ has not written military battles yet, so who knows...
b) I want to know what will happen (and who is the hidden ones) too all the Forsakens. So far not all of them had appeared.
c) Will the seals break?
d) Will Rand and the Ashman go mad before then? He is going mad already
f) Gad, the identities of all those mysterious people who kept popping out of the woodwork. Who are they? Like the man in brown who saved Rand in a highpitched battle at the end of one of the books.
g) The fate of Mat and the dice in his head and the mysterious spearhead.
h) Will Moiraine come back?
i) Is the leader of the Black Tower really on his side?

My gripes :
a) I lost track due to the length of time between each book. But on the other hand, I can emphatize with RJ for the amount of work he poured in, so no bellyaching about it.
b) Will there be more respect for the women? They seem to be stomping on all the men, sniffing with disdain, always rearranging skirts, patronising others, serene but lose temper for no good reason therefore being incomprehensible to the men who loved them? To think his wife is the editor. The women can abruptly turn around and act way out of their personalities.

Memorable scene:
For some reason, there is one scene at the end of one of the earlier books that got stuck in my mind. The memory is vague but the afterimage is strong. He saw small images of Mat and Perrin's outlined in flames floating above him.

Mark smashed the Guinness World Record by an astonishing 81 days. He had travelled more than 18,000 miles on his own through some of the harshest conditions one man and his bicycle can endure, camping wild at night and suffering from constant ailments. The Man Who Cycled the World is the story not just of that amazing achievement, but of the events that turned Mark Beaumont into the man he is today. From the early years of his free-spirited childhood in the Scottish countryside, he had been determined to break records, cycling across Scotland and then from John O'Groats to Land's End by the age of fifteen, raising thousands of pounds for charity. After leaving university, he had been equally determined not to settle for an average existence, but to break free and see the world from a saddle, to follow his dreams. This is the tale not just of one of the last great circumnavigation world records, and of the incredible endurance it took to accomplish it, but an insight into many of the world's cultures from a unique perspective. From Paris to Istanbul, through Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and south-east Asia to Singapore, then across Australia, New Zealand and the United States before the final legs in Europe, all at hundred miles a day, this is the story of a quite remarkable adventure, by a quite remarkable man.

Picture of Book Cover:

^ an update about my book searching: I have found mine at 1 Utama's MPH recently

10 of the Most Disturbing Books of All Time,

QUOTE

http://www.popcrunch.com/the-10-most-distu...ks-of-all-time/

In my younger days if I heard a book or movie was disturbing or hard to handle I generally took that as a challenge. Most books generally turned out to not be too bad, but occasionally I’d come across something that would leave me with a sick feeling in my stomach for weeks. I’ve largely outgrown this “genre” of late, but here are my picks for the ten most disturbing books of all time. Any one of these books is capable of leaving you feeling a little depressed at the least, and permanently scarred at the worst. I’d say enjoy, but that doesn’t really seem appropriate …

10. Blindness

Blindness is a book with a truly horrifying scenario at it’s heart: what if everyone in the world were to lose their sight to disease in a short period of time? The answer is actually somewhat predictable, but that doesn’t lessen the bleakness as society collapses quickly in this novel by Portugese author José Saramago. The story follows a group of characters who are among the first diagnosed and sent to be quarantined. Many think the book is an allegory dealing with spiritual blindness, but to me the book is all the more devastating when taken literally. An easily communicable virus that causes the recipient to lose their sight would be the end of things, and it wouldn’t be an easy end.

9. Requiem For A Dream

Anti drug crusaders should stop airing goofy commercials that nobody takes seriously and start pushing to have Requiem For A Dream made required reading for every high schooler in the country. Kids would probably still do drugs, but I imagine they’d be thinking twice after reading Requiem. Most people are more familiar with the movie, which was a pretty faithful translation of the book that deals with four characters who all see their lives ruined by various addictions. I read an essay at some point that argued that the real protagonist isn’t any of the main characters, instead the protagonist is Addiction, and let’s just say for Addiction things go pretty swimmingly. For the human beings it’s just one long depressing ride that ends up making you want to curl up in a corner and sob. Not exactly good beach reading.

8. Naked Lunch

Naked Lunc is another ode to drug addiction. While it’s not as flat out depressing as Requiem For A Dream, it’s a hell of a lot more strange. The story is told in a series of dream like vignettes that never allow the reader to really get their bearings and includes acts of child murder, auto-erotic asphyxiation, lots of drug use, cop killing, and orgies. The book was banned in many sections of the United States when it came out in 1959, and it’s not hard to see why. This book is easily one of the most bizarre I’ve ever read.

7. We Need to Talk About Kevin

We Need to Talk About Kevin concerns a fictionalized school massacre told through the perspective of his mother, who is writing letters to her husband trying to come to terms with the monstrosity that she birthed. The book goes into detail about Kevin displaying signs of psychosis from a young age leading up to his murder of seven classmates, a cafeteria worker, and an alegebra teacher. Kevin’s mother at least partially blames herself, as she was never all that enthusiastic about being a parent, led alone being a parent to a deeply disturbed individual. This book might sound like a bad TV movie, but it’s actually pretty well written and extremely depressing. It stays with you after you read it.

6. The Road

Bleak. If you had to sum up The Road in one word it would definitely be bleak.

Cormac McCarthy’s novel deals with a father and son dealing with a cataclysmic event (probably a meteor strike) that has left the world barren and gray. I read this book shortly after my wife and I had our first child, making the story of a father who is unable to provide much comfort to his small son in a post apocalyptic world all the more devastating. The pair travel through the book, with the father hoping things will improve the further south they get. Plants will not grow in this world, and food is scarce. Cannibals are everywhere. As powerful a book as this might be I still generally don’t recommend it to people, as it is pretty much guaranteed to leave you morose and feeling like you’ve been repeatedly hit in the stomach.

5. American Psycho

American Psycho really leaves you wondering a little bit about Bret Easton Ellis’ sanity. Many people are probably familiar with the movie starring Christian Bale, but the movie pales in comparison to the book when it comes to levels of depraved insanity. The book follows investment banker, and serial killer, Patrick Bateman over a few years of his life. As the book moves on his killings becomes more and more sadistic, leading to quite a few scenes that will never, ever completely leave your mind, including a particularly repugnant sequence involving a starved rat, some cheese, and a tube. You are guaranteed to feel a little filthy, at the least, after reading this book.

4. Johnny Got His Gun

One of the most effective anti-war novels of all time, Johnny Got His Gun is also one of the most disturbing. The book was published in 1938 and deals with a WWI soldier who has had his legs, arms, and face blown off by an artillery shell. However, his mind is completely undamaged, leaving him a prisoner in his own body, unable to communicate with the outside world. The book was later made into a film and immortalized in the Metallica song “One”.

3. The 120 Days of Sodom

The 120 Days of Sodom was a work by Marquis de Sade, who had to have at least one work on this list. The book deals with four wealthy men who want to have the ultimate orgy. To accomplish this they seal themselves away with a bunch of young men and women. The sex quickly turns sadistic and matters quickly turns to humiliation, pain, and killing. Pretty much every debased and bizarre sexual fetish is explored in detail in the book, with much of the work crossing lines that even today would be declared obscene in many parts of the US. It is amazing to me that the book was written in 1785. The 120 Days of Sodom was turned into a film called Sado, widely considered to be one of the most unpleasant and disturbing films of all time.

2. The Turner Diaries

The Turner Diaries is a racist, antisemitic novel written by William Luther Pierce, the crazy ass former leader of the white Nationalist organization “National Alliance”. It depicts a racist’s wet dream consisting of a violent revolution in the United States that leads to the overthrow of the US government and the extermination of all non-whites and Jewish people. To Pierce, Hitler’s problem was clearly that he didn’t go far enough. The rest of the plot is too crazy to even go into (let’s just say it’s about as well written and realistic as you’d expect a book like this to be), but the book gets bumped up a few notches on our list due to the fact that Timothy McVeigh was a big promoter of the book, and may have used a scene in the book as inspiration for the Oklahoma City bombing.

And the not at all scary thing is that this is still being sold at gun shows all over the US. Sleep tight!

1. The Girl Next Door

Jack Ketchum is often mentioned when the topic of “most extreme horror writer” is breached, and it’s not hard to see why when you read The Girl Next Door. The book details the abuse of a teenage girl by her aunt, who enlists neighborhood children to help torture the girl over the course of a summer. The kids gradually go along with the insane aunt, who moves from abuse to outright torture and eventually murder. This is a very twisted tale that leaves you feeling ill, until you find out the story is based on the real life murder of Sylvia Likens, who was left with her aunt by her parents, and then really was tortured to death by her aunt and neighborhood children. Then you feel really sick. But then, to add insult to injury, you learn that her aunt (Gertrude Baniszewski) was convicted of murder, but was released on parole after serving 18 years, saying at her parole hearing “I’m not sure what role I had in it … because I was on drugs. I never really knew her … I take full responsibility for whatever happened to Sylvia.” What happened to Sylvia was that she was raped with a Coke bottle while having “I’m a prostitute and proud of it” burned into her stomach with a boiling hot sewing needle before being bludgeoned to death, following months of other torture. This wasn’t enough to deny Baniszewski parole though. She lived the last five years of her life a free woman, dying of lung cancer at the age of 60. Once you read the book and then learn all of the above you pretty much lose all faith in humanity. The horrid nature of Ketchum’s book combined with the real life events it was based on easily makes The Girl Next Door, for us at least, the most disturbing book of all time.

I've only read Blindness and American Psycho. However, The Turner is sold at the KLIA bookstore last time i remember(along with Mein Kampf and some NWO books). It's disturbing to see how these books gets to creep out most films today.

How do you store your books?, So that it's dust-free, easy accessible

I'm wondering how you guys and girls store your books. As I share my room with my big bro, there's not much space for a real bookshelf, so put my books on a wooden screwed onto the wall.

But the bad thing is, there's a a lot of dust, plus it's not long/wide enough for my book collection that I have to put the books in horizontal position to fit in more books.

If I want to read the book on the lowest position I have to be careful not to move to much or else the upper books gonna fly down towards me.

Anyway, this is how I put my books.

So...how do you put yours?

Tips for writing a book & publising it, Come on, let's share!

Hello all, I was wondering what are the things or points take a writer got to take note of it before writing a book? Such as language, the book's theme, book title, the number of words in a book and etc. Or anyone have something to share? Another thing is, what are the avenues for publishing a book? If a writer has completed a book, does he/she need to take out his/her money to publish the book?
Was their third purchaser of the anticipated book. Bought with staff discount. Retails at RM99.90. You have the option of getting either the US Doubleday publisher edition or the UK version. Personally, I think the US version look spiffier. And three cheers for early opening MPH KLIA.

I'm not sure what the deal is with MPH, but Kinokuniya preorders for this book is entitled for 30% discount off that RM99.90 price. Gonna use that discount later to get the UK Edition. for everyone's info, only hardcover editions are available now.

Later on at 2pm today, will be logging in into my Amazon account and purchase the Kindle Edition, USD9.99. Delivery will be instantaneous of course, via Amazon Digital Locker. That way, I can keep the hardcovers pristine in the house library.

Will Robert Langdon be tossing cryptex in the air again or looking for antimatter timebombs again? From the cover, looks like it's in the States in the Capitol revolving around the Freemasons. Delicious!

Oh, did I mention that the US Doubleday Edition looks absolutely gorgeous? Sprinkled with Mason glyphs and symbol it is!

Michael Jackson Conspiracy by Aphrodite Jones,

Many people around me were so sure of Jackson's guilt. Many reporters had slanted TV and radio coverage to suit the prosecution, and I was one of those folks who had followed that dangerous trend."

Now, in a new book, Michael Jackson Conspiracy, Jones is setting the record straight. Aphrodite Jones's most daring book ever examines the case against the world's No. 1 entertainer: Michael Jackson.

About the Author

With five bestselling crime books under her belt, Aphrodite Jones has become a highly recognized authority on true crime. Jones has made more than one hundred television and radio appearances and has been quoted in articles that have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Post, Daily News, The Hollywood Reporter, and USA Today. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller 'Cruel Sacrifice', and her account of the Brandon Teena story, 'All She Wanted', became an international bestseller and was transformed into the film 'Boys Don't Cry'.

One review from Amazon website

Innocence is not always a good quality., July 22, 2009
By L. Power "nlp trainer" (San Francisco)

I don't know if you're like me, but ever since Michael Jackson passed away, I have been really curious to know the truth.

I don't think there has ever been anyone more misrepresented in human history than Michael Jackson. He said in an interview that '99.9% of what's written about me is not true.' He said this long before he ever went on trial.

After he was found 'not guilty' of the 10 charges, he was still treated as if he was guilty by the media. Forced to leave the country, to go to Bahrain, like a bird tossed out of its nest, never to return to Neverland again.

I wondered: 'well if he's innocent of the trial charges, what about the 1993 case where there was a settlement..'

When Aphrodite Jones went to numerous publishers, nobody wanted to publish a pro Jackson book, a book that would tell the truth about the trial. She actually had to self publish.

"In this world there are facts, and there are opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, not to their own facts." Senator Patrick Moynihan.

I cannot tell you what a relief it is to read a truthful book about Michael Jackson. The further you get into this book, the more you realise how Michael was not only not guilty but truly had the innocence and nature of a 10 year old child.

This naivete made him easy prey for a predatory reporter such as Bashir, who got a career making opportunity to film a documentary for free only to taint it with his own duplicity, sinister interpretation and innuendo. He reputedly sold the documentary to ABC for $7 million, and got a job as anchor, destroying MJ in the process without a second thought. After all, would a pedophile invite a camera crew into his home, and admit to sharing a bedroom with 10 year old kids. If children were abused, would there not be an immediate change in their behavior. Would their parents also staying at the house not notice this?

No.. Pedophiles act out of compulsion, cannot control themselves, and usually have hundreds of victims.

This naivete made him easy prey for the Arvizos who did the round of other celebrities such as Chris Tucker, George Lopez, and even Jay Leno looking for a handout. These guys got wiser sooner.

Among the many revelations in this book: The Arvizos deny on four separate occasions after the Bashir documentary that any molestation ever took place, on audio tape, on a rebuttal video, to DCFS workers, and to Gavin Arvizo's school principal.

Only after visiting the same civil attorney used in the 1993 case, after all this did Arvizo make a final return to Neverland. It is then he alleges the incident happened. Under cross examination, it is established that if Arvizo got a criminal conviction, he could sue MJ in a civil action until he was 18.

In the trial, the 1993 evidence was introduced. Jordan Chandler refused to testify against Michael Jackson. His mother did appear as a witness and surprisingly said she never had any qualms about her son being around Michael Jackson.

Janet Arvizo gave wild and wacky testimony, alleging that MJ conspired to keep her family captive at Neverland, and that he planned to abduct her son. Meanwhile she charges thousands of dollars for beauty treatments on the Neverland account in a local town, gets dental treatment for her soon paid by Jackson, alleges MJ made her fly to Miami to give a rebuttal interview. The truth is she found out MJ was in Miami and had Chris Tucker charter a jet for her to fly out with her children.

Janet Arvizo previously alleged sexual assault against JC Penney when her son was arrested for shoplifting. She claimed a security guard tweaked her nipple 25 times. She won a large settlement. Mesereau exposed glaring inconsistencies in the evidence in that case, particularly her claims that she had been assaulted yet the police photos taken shortly after showed no signs of assault, or even a need for medical attention, yet days later she turns up to an attorney with fresh color photos with bruises. She lied to a newspaper about having not having medical insurance, and lied about the cost of treatment to get them to raise money for her family.

What will amaze you as you read this book, is how many viewed Michael Jackson as a meal ticket for life. Disgruntled former employees who had lost multi million dollar lawsuits made the most outrageous allegations, which were skilfully dismantled and disproven by the incisive cross examination of Tom Mesereau.

About the 1993 agreement, Jackson said on the Prime Time Diane Sawyer interview, that the only reason he was sitting there giving the interview was that the photographs taken of his parts did not match up with the description of the accuser. There are many more surprises waiting between the covers of this book.

If you are filled with a burning curiosity to know the truth, you can feel confident that this book is true. If you are curious to explore even further I may post some links in the comment section below.

I hope you find this helpful.
Here's a thread dedicated to discussion about Meg Cabot and her books.

QUOTE

Meg Cabot (born Meggin Patricia Cabot on February 1, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana, United States) is an American chick-lit author of romantic comedies for teens and adults. She has written under the name Meggin Cabot, as well as the pseudonyms Patricia Cabot and Jenny Carroll. She has written and published over fifty books, and is best known for The Princess Diaries, later made by Walt Disney Pictures into two feature films of the same name. Cabot has more than fifteen million copies of her books — children's, young adult, and adult — in print worldwide. Her website averages about 80,000 unique visitors a month.

After graduating from the university, Cabot moved to New York City, with the original aim of pursuing a career as an illustrator. However, she soon quit this job and started working as an assistant manager of the freshman dormitory at New York University. This new job gave her more time to work on her writings.

Meg Cabot married financial writer and poet Benjamin D. Egnatz on April 1, 1993. Their wedding date, April Fool’s Day, was a deliberate play on her husband's belief that only fools get married in the first place. The wedding was actually an elopement in Italy. Her novel Every Boy's Got One is loosely based on her own elopement. She has two cats, Henrietta (a one eyed cat) and Gem, about whom she often blogs.

After living in Indiana, California, New York, and France, she now currently resides in Key West, Florida. She splits her time between an apartment in New York, New York, and a barn in Bloomington, Indiana.

Meg Cabot is one of my absolute favourite. Her books is funny, well written and entertaining. Even though its chic-lits, I enjoyed them very, very much.

My favourite Meg Cabot books:

Princess Diaries (1-10 ENDED) - Only read up to 8 so far.
The story about a girl who founds out she is really a princess. Nothing related to the God-awful second movie.

The Mediatore (1-6 ENDED) - I HAVE THEM ALL!
My favourite of ALL her books. Buffy meets Ghost Whisperer. Kickass!

Avalon High
Arthurian Legend rediscovered!

All American Girl
How saving a president's life change a teenage girl's life.

How to Be Popular
Geek Girl find Popular book and use it as a guide.

Heather Wells series
Slightly overweight girl who works in a college who also solves murder mystery.

Her blog
Yes.
