One of the most popular questions we get when it comes to creating UMS (User Map Settings) games or mods is: Will there be a DotA for StarCraft II? For those who are not familiar, DotA (Defense of the Ancients), is a popular UMS game created for Warcraft III.

StarCraft compared to Warcraft III, does not focus on heroes as much, and heroes or units do not have the same experience gaining mechanic as Warcraft III, making it difficult to imagine how a game like DotA could be reproduced for StarCraft.

Nonetheless, after chatting it up with our devs, we found out the ability to allow heroes and units to gain experience is built into the Map Editor, though it will not likely be in single player or standard multiplayer. In addition, those units can also be toggled to have the ability to carry an inventory, which is also a characteristic needed in UMS maps such as DotA.

I started playing this years ago and currently am a Captain rank.

Night of the Dead II is the original custom map in warcraft 3. Off spring from this custom map are NOTD Aftermath, NOTD Spec Ops, and Dawn of the Dead.

But in my honest opinion, the original NOTD II beats all these other clone games because the experience is better. The clones have a few good things about them that would be nice to add to NOTD II, SUCH AS the code generator which are color coded. And also restricted classes based on rank attained.

Anyway, the objective of NOTD II is to survive 15 waves of zombies.

1. At the start of the game you load code to gain back your profile with experience, rank and medals gained so far.

2. Select your class ( i usually get heavy support because i'm a zombie whore )

3. Your character is spawned at a random location. You need to immediately regroup with the team. This is customarily in the center of the map at the top tip of the diamond. Along the way pick up any crates you see.

4. Wait at the designated area until wave 2 before moving north. The usual route is going clockwise which we term as a tiki route.

More advance explanation for how to play NOTD II

Question: Why not go inside buildings and camp ?

(a) The reason people move is because you cannot bunk down inside buildings because you have poor line of sight and very narrow vision. And when abominations come, you cannot tank them because they only need to chop you 1-2 times before you die .........

You also need supplies like ammo boxes, clips, road flares, explosives such as chains/claymore/satchels, and special items like minigun and shiva to survive 15 waves.

Question: I cannot shoot anymore why is that ?

Gold shows bullets you have inside your weapon. Wood shows many clips you have. When you have no more bullets or clips, you will not be able to shoot ..... you need to finx an ammo box or a clip. left click the box or clip to add the clip to your wood. Your character will load the clip into your gun if you have no bullets. An ammo box holds 5 clips. Sometimes people use some of the clips in the box except 1 so they can keep the box to hold clips and share ammo with team mates better.

Question: Why not just outrun zombies to survive 15 waves ?

You can't. By pressing Z then T, you can run faster, but it only lasts for 10 seconds or so, and the cool down is a few minutes ....... There are a few types of zombies which i will explain.

(a) regular zombie: They move slow and you can walk or outrun them. However there are many of them. As long as you don't get cornered, you can easily walk or outrun them. Just stop shoot to clear zombies in your way. if their behind you and not too close just walk or run away from them.

(b) ghouls: After killing regular zombies, their corpses usually become ghouls. Ghouls are very fast and cannot be outrun. It's possible for a recon to sprint to outrun ghouls, however his sprint will not last forever. Another thing about ghouls is that they attack very fast unlike regular zombies that are sluggish ....

© worms: They are small zombies that move fast. If they hit you, you get a virus. Your life goes down bit by bit over time, and you move slower. You either need a medic to cure your virus, or you consume 1 anti virus to remove the debuff. Fortunately they are easy to kill. They aren't a threat unless you let them hit you which you never should.

(d) dogs: There are a few types of dogs. However the rule of thumb is, it's not safe to go off alone and a dog comes. Dogs can kill you off if your alone by yourself. Unless you could kill them before they reached you. Dogs movement speed is very fast and cannot be outrun. You need to stay your ground and kill them, before moving away.

(e) Gargoyles: They are the only air units in the game. They are very fast. They usually appear during begining of Certain waves such as wave 3. During gargoyle waves, everybody needs to group back together to take down the bats. When you get swamped by many zombies, you should manually aim Gargoyles first as their usually the bigger threat because they deal a lot of damage and attack very fast. They cannot be outrunned so group to your team as fast as you can and stand ground to kill them off fast.

(f) Abominations: Also reffered to as fattys or Lygs. Their slow, but they have alot of health points and are hard to kill. AND they can 1-2 chop kill you. The best way to take down these fattys is to use explosives. The designated demolition will plant chains, claymores, satchels and blow them when fatty goes over them. Then everyone finishes it off by gunfire if it's life is low, or plant more explosives. Even if abomination is slow, people always make the mistake of stand ground firing and it gets close to them and it's too late to run. People need to keep max firing distance from abomination before shooting. Also people need to stay clear of the explosives planted to kill the fatty.

(g) bosses: Bosses are bats, dogs, and also nerub assasins. They cannot be outrunned. Your only hope is to have a good demo who can plant explosives and detonate them when the bosses come. Road flares are usually set so they have a far line of sight to see the bosses coming from far off so you can detonate the explosives faster.

And finally, the biggest reason you cannot out run zombies is because sooner of later you need to trigger waves. You have a time limit to kill enough zombies to trigger the next wave OR else a massive number of zombies called fluffies will come and kill you. It is impossible to win then

QuestionL: I'm stuck and cannot move, help

Satchel's introduced a nasty side effect bug which makes you stuck now and then which until now has not been fixed. But don't worry because they did come up with a solution to unstuck.

You need to assign your character to number 1 and 2. When your stuck, select grouping number 1, then click anywhere to move, then select grouping number 2, then click wherewhere to move, then switch back to grouping 1 and repeat. You should then be unstuck

Many unsuspecting noobs die because of this and give up on NOTD because they get fedup.

Question: What are explosives ? Can i use them ?

Explosives blow up and have high area of effect damage. If a team mate is accidently in range of these explosives, he can die from the explosion ....

Explosives are 2 types. Class Skill and item types. Classes such as Demolition, Grunt and Marksman have certain skillz that can make explosive effects.

(a) Classes explanation

Demolition has cluster munitions that scatters mini claymores in a wide area; has a RPG to blow a specified area/target, can plant claymores, and chains.

Grunt has a Grenade launcher ability that grows in area of effect the higher you level it, same as the demolitions RPG.

Marksman has a cannister shot. Activating it, it will auto fire and explode a target closest to it. If the zombie runs up to you and you cannister shot, your dead. Or you could accidently cannister shot when a zombie is next to your team mate. Cannister shot should never be used unless you are a veteran or you could kill team mates often then not.

(b) Items explanations

Claymores once planted on the floor, will detonate when a zombie goes in range of it. This is why claymores should never be handled by newbies. Veterans usually plant it where team mates won't accidently go on it. If you get this pass it along to a veteran.

Chains are set in bunches of 6-8 and someone detonates it using either a detonator which a demolition can set, or using a demolition RPG or grunt grenade launcher or using an explosive weapon like rmgl, or law. Setting a chain on the floor won't detonate even if a zombie steps on it, however the reason you don't plant it anyhow is if someone accidently rpgs nearby, it could accidently explode when your team mates are on it. Chains are important so grab them and pass to a veteran. Do not plant them unless your a veteran and using it for fatties, or bosses.

Satchels once set, it has a trigger. You select the satchel and select if you want to detonate it. Pass this to a veteran. Note however a chain can be rigged with a detonator if a demolition has a high demolition skillz mastered.

Question: Is there any guide in game how to play this ?

No there isn't any. It's the same as DOTA in that they leave it up to you to figure things out or die ingame. NOTD II is even harsher because the learning curve is a killer. In Dota you get resurrected, but in NOTD II once dead, your dead forever.

The only way beginners can learn if if a veteran walks them through the game. Also when the beginners die, they should stay and watch how the game is played. The first game is always just a tutorial and not really a serious attempt to complete 15 waves which is impossible with newbie team mates.

Ironically i managed to get to wave 12 with 2 others including myself to make a 3 veteran team. But when i played with a fullhouse 10 with many noobs, we died at wave 3-6.

Question: What else can i look forward to besides surviving 15 waves ?

For every kill you get Experience. 1 Kill = 1 experience. Rank is based on how much experience you get. Rank gives you recognition and better stats such as HP, Mana, Damage, movement speed, splash damage, attack speed etc ....

You also can get Medals which give you the same benefits. To get medals however is much complicated. A medal requires you to obtain a certain amount of kills withint 1 single game, or a combination of kills and how much mana you consumed in the game. The most difficult medal to get is the medal of honor. I only managed to get mine twice by using Medic and marksman. You kill alot and spam your skillz alot. Energy cell really helps because you get faster mana regen.

Question: When i start a new game, my experience, rank and medals don't carry over. Did i do something wrong ?

After each game when you die, you need to SAVE by typing "-save" without the quotes. You are then given a code. You need to jot this code onto a piece of paper or minimize warcraft 3 and type it into a notepad.

Make sure to check the code you copied is correct by typing -check followed by your code. If it says the code matches then you copied your code correctly.

If it doesn't match, then type -code to show your code again on screen.

When you start a new game, type -load followed by your code.

Codes you use are unique to your username only. It is possible to use a Name spoofer to use someone elses Nick, and then use their code but i don't recommend it.

Rock Cafe Cyber Experience will be having its grand opening on 23/7/08 Wednesday . With over 200 pcs and a pleasant enviroment for gaming and just chilling out alike , we invite you to come and test the facilities . Login will be free on both the 23rd and 24th , being Wednesday and Thursday . Please leave any feedback and suggestions if you deem necessary .

We are located at rockcafe@medan sunway, Jalan pjs11/20, Sunway . Couple of blocks away from the Sunway College side entrance , on top of the food court .
