The New 12” into CULV Notebook Mix–MSI Wind12 U200,

Intel’s Ultra Low Voltage CPU has already been on the market for several years
and the previous generation 65nm ULV CPU’s have most commonly been used on high-end business models that are priced over US $2,000.
The latest 45nm CPU’s from Intel from the past two years are also slowly making their way into the PC/NB market.
Since the start of 2009, Intel is also introducing their 45nm ULV products to the next generation of budget notebooks.

The first ever CULV notebooks introduced at the beginning of May are from ACER and MSI.
In July, Lenovo and ASUS followed suit; with HP and DELL debuting their CULV products since October.
This market segment is clearly expanding and will most probably follow the steps of Atom,
where all major companies will feature the CPU with their products.

However, CULV is initially focused on the 13.3~ 14” notebooks and will then lead to the 15.6” product lines.
It is not until recently that we have seen 12” notebooks featured with CULV CPU’s.
My personal guess is that the Atom CPU used in 11.6” and smaller netbooks is slower by more than half compared to CULV,
and rushing out the 12” versions will eat into the current Atom market.

MSI’s first generation netbook, Wind U100, from last year stood head-to-head with products from other NB manufacturers,
and was well accepted by the market. This also helped build the brand recognition of MSI.
This time, MSI is introducing the 12” CULV notebook following its predecessor, the product we are reviewing today, MSI Wind12 U200.

First is the product packaging, there are black/white U200 to choose from

MSI Wind12 U200 main unit

Accessories
Windows Vista Home Premium, product warranty, driver CD, and instruction manuals

U200 carry bag with MSI logo on the outside

Power adapter is not the commonly seen mini version but is even smaller.
This size is less common and is convenient for travel.
DELTA is a longstanding and trusted brand that makes quality products.
The adapter is warm during charging but is not too hot, which is quite acceptable in this regard.

Included is the MSI mouse that has a compact design with hidden wires.

6Cell battery, 5200mAh and 58Wh
U200 with 6Cell battery weighs approximately 1.5kg, or 1.4kg with 3Cell.

View of the bottom
Matte surface design of the outer shell

Battery installation slot

Dell Inspiron 14 Laptop, Can help check if specs are sufficient?

Hi, looking to buy a laptop and having my eyes on Dell Inspiron 14. They have promotion for it till next week so need to decide fast. Specs as follows:

- Processor Intel® Pentium® Processor T4300 (2.1GHz / 800FSB / 1MB Cache)
- Genuine Windows® 7 Home Basic 64bit (English)
- RAM 3GB (1X1GB+1X2GB) Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
- 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
- 14.0 " High Definition (1366x768) LED Display with TrueLife™
- Video Card Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
- Optical Drive 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with DVD+R double layer write capability, with Roxio Burn 1.0--For WIN 7
- Wireless Network Card Dell Wireless 1397 802.11b/g Half Mini Card
- McAfee® Security Center™ (15 Months)
- 1 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis

Price at RM1,999 which I think is a very good deal, wish to snap it up but wondering if this build will be sufficient for my needs. I will be using the laptop for:

- Basic surfing and working (Microsoft Office, etc) (Primary activity)
- Games like Sims 3 and Warcraft. (Not my main priority, but to curb boredom once in awhile)

And also, how long can the battery last for Inspiron 14? Wanna consider the Inspiron 14z with longer battery life, but it's quite expensive, and heavy. Do you often come across short battery life problem with Inspiron 14?

Fancy of having multi toucpad, on your normal Synaptics toucpad?

Most of the Synaptics TouchPad hardware devices do support multi-touch, which is implemented at software driver level as Synaptics Gestures. In fact, Synaptics had a commercial video titled “Things You Can Do With a Gesture” to promote new notebooks with Synaptics Gestures.

However, for marketing reason, Synaptics official standard drivers for most Synaptics TouchPads does not support multi-touch Synaptics Gestures. Synaptics’ drivers lock gesture features on all non-supported OEM notebooks and laptop PCs, except for certain gadgets such as ASUS EEE PC. So multi-touch is disabled even though touchpad hardware does support them.

Download synaptics_v10.2.4.0_allOS_modded_b2.zip or touchpad_synaptics_v10.2.4_vistax32×64_xpx32×64_modded_build2.zip (with both 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64 mod drivers)

The Synaptics TouchPad driver should support all Windows operating system such as Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, do note that the digital signatures of the modded drivers have been broken, and the drivers are no longer signed. Thus, there may be issue when use in 64bit operating system which enforces strict driver signing requirements.
